It’s no secret that the ratings for Agent Carter’s second season have been pretty dismal. So when ABC announced today that Hayley Atwell has been cast as the lead in a new show, it’s more than a little worrisome.

As far as bad news goes, this one at least has a decent silver lining. Because while it’ll be a sad day if Agent Carter does get the axe, at least we won’t have any Atwell gap. And this new show, Conviction, even keeps her fighting bad guys. Well, sort of. From TVLine,

The project will star Atwell as the brilliant-but-rebellious daughter of a Clinton-like political family, who is forced into taking a job as the head of Los Angeles’ newly created Conviction Integrity Unit. Along with her team of lawyers, investigators and forensic experts, she has two weeks to examine cases where there’s credible suspicion that the wrong person may have been convicted of a crime.

She just can’t break out of that sexy government agent mold. So it’s kind of like Agent Carter, right? Except without the period costumes. Or the British accent (presumably). Or the fighting. Or the Jarvis. Okay, fine, This sounds terrible. It sounds like Law & Order: Making a Murderer, but boring.

ABC is adamant so far that Atwell could potentially do both shows, but they obviously have to say that at this point. If they weren’t, it would basically be admitting that the show is getting cancelled. It’s also pretty much unheard of (or at least SUPER rare and logistically nightmarish) for a star of one show to be cast as the lead in another pilot on the same network. I suppose we can be grateful that if Agent Carter has to be cancelled, they’re at least giving us any sort of consolation to wean us off of our weekly Atwell fix, even if it is a grossly inferior one.
