Joss Whedon and Ira Glass. Together. At Last.

Fans of both Ira Glass’ radio show, “This American Life” and Joss Whedon, here is your cinematic mecca:

Ira Glass will host an actual episode of the radio program, performed onstage by some of our favorite contributors. Dan Savage, Starlee Kine, and Mike Birbiglia will tell stories. David Rakoff and Dave Hill will conduct a ‘special investigation.’ Plus a new cartoon by Chris Ware, additional visuals by Arthur Jones, and a very special appearance by Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer! The performance will last around two hours. We’re going to capture the whole thing with a bunch of HD cameras, and send it live* to movie theatres all over the country.

How cool is that? Not just Whedon and Glass, but David Rakoff (who I dig, but would it be too insulting to call him the poor man’s David Sedaris?) and Dan Savage. The screening will happen for one night only — Thursday, April 23rd, and it will be screened in 400 theaters across the nation. If you live in an urban area or a college town, you’re golden. You can buy tickets and find the complete list of theater screening the movie here.

(Thanks for the tip, Paddydog)

Dan Savage! Savage Love is my weekly portal into the lives of really fucked-up people. Awesome.

The podcast is good, too.

This American Life skeeves me out because of a comic I once read written by someone who used to work for it. But Chris Ware rocks.

who I dig, but would it be too insulting to call him the poor man’s David Sedaris?

Nah. I like Rakoff, but he's not quite as biting as Sedaris.

squee!
That is almost too cool for words. Even made up ones.

AND Chris Ware!

Squeal! Thanks to living in a liberal college town, it's coming here!

Posted by: Quincy at April 9, 2009 12:20 PM

I heard this on the radio this morning. I always thought those ONE NIGHT LIVE EVENT showings at the Regal sounded stupid, but this one? I'm considering it.

Thanks for pointing out yet another way in which College Station, Texas, sucks. I just bought a house here, yay! Bitches.

Posted by: Brook at April 9, 2009 12:36 PM

So, it's coming to a random little tourist town in Washington, but not the liberal State University town 20 minutes from me. Well, that fucking blows. I guess I am driving to Seattle.

Posted by: Miss_E at April 9, 2009 12:43 PM

And not a single screening in the entire state of North Carolina. Come on, people! We even went blue in November! What more do you want from us?

Posted by: marya at April 9, 2009 12:59 PM

Fuck you again Dustin. First you diss on another one of my favorite films yet again, and now you post that something this awesome will be screened hundreds of miles from where I live. God damn you!

Lucas,if you don't mind me asking, what exactly about This American Life skeeves you out? Are they horrible to their employees or something? Your comment has left me surprisingly intrigued. IS IRA GLASS SECRETLY A VICIOUS SLAVE MASTER?

That would blow my mind.

Posted by: Andy at April 9, 2009 1:04 PM

Sigh, it seems to be sold out in the LA-area theaters already. People in this town love their NPR!

Posted by: Abby at April 9, 2009 1:05 PM

Who's Ira Glass?

Posted by: sosumi at April 9, 2009 1:43 PM

plus mike birbiglia! Is it just me, or do Ira Glass and Rachel Maddow look the same?

Posted by: jasper at April 9, 2009 2:33 PM

So, is this the post where I get to gloat about the fact that I saw David Sedaris this past Sunday, and he was fabulous, wonderful, awesome? 'Cause I did and he was.

Of course, for the past several days, I've been walking around saying, "OBAMA!" in my head a la his French neighbors, followed by the last part of that essay/story, "Get you're own Black president."

And why yes, I do live in a college town and work in another. Nonetheless, this movie is coming to the cineplex in the town between the two. In any case, I guess I should mark my calendar.

Thanks for the heads-up Dustin and Paddy!

Even better, I read somewhere that Joss is going to grace us with a musical performance.

Posted by: shadrach at April 9, 2009 3:05 PM

Who's Ira Glass? I've never heard of any of these people except for Whedon.

Posted by: BWeaves at April 9, 2009 4:27 PM

BWeaves:

Check out NPR on Saturday afternoons: This American Life. You won't be disappointed.

Posted by: PaddyDog at April 9, 2009 4:46 PM

BWeaves,

Check local listings. It comes on on Sundays in my area.

And this is great. It's gonna be screened in Birmingham(well, Trussville). I figured the closest it would come would be Altanta, or Montgomery(since Montgomery has a theater that shows independent, non-mainstream films).

this is why i love the internet, that being the mingling of great personalities and wonderful wit and bright thinking. i totally give respect where deserved.

that said, damn! what a bunch of nerds. if i hung out with you guys in real life, *I* wouldn't have a chance at getting laid...

Posted by: gp at April 9, 2009 6:27 PM

Oh em gee - this sounds completely amazing. America is wonderful and Europe blows. I love Dan Savage and Ira Glass; gutted to be missing this.

Posted by: Caspar at April 9, 2009 7:16 PM

I simply cannot wait to see a giant Starlee Kine lisping her way through her story. If it was in 3D, it'd be as if you were sitting through a waterfall!

Posted by: Jacques at April 9, 2009 11:21 PM

Sorry it took me forever to notice this, and I'm sure you won't ever read my reply, but here's to you, Andy:

The comic basically said that they were cold and indifferent towards their subjects. They'd put on a face of friendliness to get an interview, but if it didn't match up to their demographic, they'd can it and that was that. And I want to say they had creepy editing to alter the stories so as to make them more appealing to their listeners who don't really want to hear what the lives of simple American folk are like.
