Inglourious Basterds is a Hit! Or a Bomb!

Screw It: Here are Some Clips / Dustin Rowles

Trade News | May 20, 2009 | Comments (23)

Last night, Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds debuted at the Cannes film festival, and the early reviews have been weirdly mixed. The movie blogging contingent (the same folks who loved Grindhouse) seems to love it, with some even saying that it’s the best thing that Tarantino has done, arguably, since Pulp Fiction (though, one critic I can’t recall did say that Eli Roth’s performance was the lone weakness). Some of the more general attendees haven’t been as high on it, and the UK Guardian has even called it the Cannes’ turkey. All of which is to say: Who the hell knows?

But, on the heels of its debut at Cannes, there have been a few new promos released. So we can at least get some more general feel for what to expect when it’s finally released wide in August. Check them out:

Terminator review?

Twig: We're a bigger site now, and this policy sometimes pains us in the summer months when we're behind other sites who go to advanced screenings. But we're sticking to our principles, especially now, when -- in my opinion -- the reviews on some other movie blogs are seriously affected by access. From our About page, a policy ours from the beginning:

If you are a regular visitor, you might notice that, unlike other movie sites, we don’t post most of our reviews until the afternoon a film opens. This is because we have decided to forego advance screenings for critics. Why? Partly because film critics make for extraordinarily annoying company when you’re trying to enjoy a movie. But more importantly, critics’ screenings are arranged through the movie studios’ public relations firms, and we would rather not feel beholden to them. This approach gives us the freedom to express our feelings about appalling Hollywood releases in colorful language without offending a studio go-between. We like to call this “guerrilla criticism.” When we can, we sometimes go to sneak previews and advance screenings that are open to the public but, for the most part, we buy tickets and see movies just like the rest of you.

That's a really long way of saying: It'll publish on Friday.

I would like this to be good, but I am skeptical. I recently saw "Death Proof" on free cable. It was... awful.

I saw "Planet Terror" last night and liked it quite a bit more, but Tarantino's offering was long, quite dull and all the actresses seemed to speak and move in some weird Tarantinoesque affectation. I am not sure if it was his direction or if they just watched all of his other movies and tried to (poorly) mimic the cadence and movements of other actors.

Most likely, I will end up seeing this one on free cable as well a year or two down the line.

Oops. Saw it listed on a marquee as I was driving home and I thought it was a Wednesday release.

Twig: No need. It is being released tonight at midnight. And if I were writing the review, it'd be up tomorrow. But often, a big serious summer blockbuster needs the magic touch of Daniel Carlson, and he's not available until Friday. The wait should be worth it.

"the magic touch of Daniel Carlson"

SXSW flashback...

...shudder

That wasn't magic at all.

That wasn't magic at all.

Did you clench?

Posted by: twig at May 20, 2009 11:35 AM

They should have gone with Eli Wallach.

"They should have gone with Eli Wallach."

If God did not want them shorn, he would not have made them sheep.

By the time this comes out I'll be a month into the lease on my new place down in Miami and probably too broke to go to the movies, but I can seen myself dumping out my change cup to scrape together the $7.50 (student price) needed to go to a matinee showing. This looks fun in a very dark, disturbing way. I like it.

Brad Pitt is leaving me kind of unexcited.
He seems kind of boring...

Posted by: missh at May 20, 2009 11:58 AM

I have a strong feeling this movie will be a piece of crap.

Posted by: Bd at May 20, 2009 12:32 PM

I'll admit, the first trailer I saw had me psyched but Brad Pitt isn't quite doing it for me this time. I'll give it a chance. Tarantino hasn't made a movie I didn't enjoy.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at May 20, 2009 12:40 PM

The only one of those promos that I liked was the third one. It was way more interesting to me than Brad Pitt's wry little smirky smile and boring delivery.

I do really hope this is great, though.

Posted by: Marcela at May 20, 2009 12:45 PM

I expect nothing from this. I have no hopes whatsoever. Which means that even if it sucks, I'll enjoy it somewhat.

Posted by: George at May 20, 2009 5:04 PM

Here's a problem: Diane Kruger. She cannot act as shown in za clip. I'm calling this movie a flop based on her being cast in it alone.

Posted by: Gistine at May 20, 2009 6:22 PM

Tarantino's done. Kaput. He was a flash with little substance and no one would miss him if he disappeared.

That said, it'll open decent, but after that first week when the die-hards go see it, who else will bother to catch a showing?

Posted by: B-Unit at May 20, 2009 7:02 PM

I still want my scalps baby.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at May 20, 2009 7:08 PM

Yes, Dustin...Where's the review of Terminator? Are you trying to reach Bale?
Does it hurt you when you look at his shirtless picture?

Posted by: James at May 21, 2009 2:01 AM

I liked all of the promos (thers a german hrr tht wants to die for counry. OOOOOOBBBBLLLLIIIIGGGGGE him) and am excited. I haven't seen Pulp Fiction and didn't necessarily care for Reservoir Dogs, but will be at the theaters the first day.

Posted by: greenman at May 21, 2009 11:54 PM

"Strangers with this kind of honesty make me go a big rubbery one."

I'll still be there the first day cause Quentin has always made some kick ass movies.

judging by the trailer, it looks like Inglourious Basterds will be loaded with some awesome one (or two) -liners
