Have I mentioned that I am dying for the second season of HBO’s adaptation of A Song Of Ice And Fire to start? Well, I am. As you all know, I adored the first season of “Game Of Thrones,” and am patiently waiting for it to kick up again, even though it won’t be until next year (ugh). But there’s been a flurry of casting news about the second season, which will be based on George R.R. Martin’s second novel, A Clash Of Kings, and I figured I’d catch y’all up.

The following is the confirmed list of new characters and the actors who will play them. If you’re one of those who haven’t read the books, you’ll be confused. If you have, well, tell me what you think while doing your best not to give anything major away.

Oona Chaplin (who is actually the granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin): Jeyne Westerling

Liam Cunningham: Ser Davos Seaworth

Stephen Dillane: Stannis Baratheon

Natalie Dormer: Margaery Tyrell

Hannah Murray: Gilly

Gemma Whelan: Yara Greyjoy (called Asha in the books, but the writers didn’t want viewers to confuse her with Osha — dumb, I know)

Carice van Houten: Melisandre of Asshai

Gwendoline Christie (who is, for those curious, 6’3”): Brienne of Tarth

Natalie Dormer: Margaery Tyrell = perfection. This is super exciting!

Posted by: Scully at August 24, 2011 11:35 AM

All seem to fit their parts (or at least as I pictured them). Well, all but Ms. Christie, who looks way more attractive than I pictured poor Brienne.

And I didn't think Jeyne was in "A Clash of Kings."

Posted by: Fredo at August 24, 2011 11:35 AM

stephen dillane as stanni b?
mer.

Posted by: beet salad at August 24, 2011 11:38 AM

Gwendoline is too pretty, Robert Pugh too broad, and how can Melisandre not be Christina Hendricks?

Posted by: McSquish at August 24, 2011 11:41 AM

all but Ms. Christie, who looks way more attractive than I pictured poor Brienne.

Well, in comparison, I really doubt Rory McCann had half of his face burned just so he could land the part of Sandor.

Know what I'm sayin'?

Know what I'm sayin'?

Oh I'm sure the make-up folks will find a way to ugly her up. I've no doubts there. Just saying that, on first glance, she looked way prettier than the character.

This whole exercise is picturing the actor shown as the character we've read about.

McSquish, I think Van Houten can nail the hell out of the role of Melissandre.

Posted by: Fredo at August 24, 2011 11:48 AM

I thought the renaming of Asha was due to Osha, not Arya but I may be mistaken.

Posted by: Matt at August 24, 2011 11:48 AM

And "Yara" and "Arya" are anagrams of each other, which, personally, is going to confuse me way more than "Asha" vs. "Arya."

Posted by: Rykker at August 24, 2011 11:50 AM

TK, didn't they cast Roose Bolton? Where is Roose Bolton?

I agree with Rykker, I have no doubt that they can sufficiently uglify Christie to make her look more Brienneish. The odds of finding an actress who can (1) act, (2) is tall enough and (3) is ugly enough would be very difficult. Of the three requirements, No. 3 is the easiest to fix, make-up, hair dyes, etc.

I thought they were also worred that Asha would be confused with Osha, the wildling woman.

The casting is sound. What is a little more odd than who they've cast is what characters haven't been cast and, thus, don't look like they'll be in season two. No Tullys, besides Catelyn - no Blackfish, no Edmure, no Hosteen. No Jojen or Meera Reed.

As for Jeyne Westerling's casting, I think they have mentioned that they plan on putting some Storm of Swords stuff into the second season.

(The did indeed cast Bolton - updated! -TK)

Posted by: Forbiddendonut at August 24, 2011 11:50 AM

I thought she was going to be playing Jeyne Poole...

Posted by: Jen at August 24, 2011 11:56 AM

She too old to play Jeyne Poole.

Posted by: dl at August 24, 2011 12:03 PM

But Oona is perfect to play Jeyne, I think.

Posted by: dl at August 24, 2011 12:04 PM

Yay! I haven't seen Hannah Murray since the first (and best) season of Skins.
I know they jacked up the ages of the Stark pack without affecting the plot, but I feel like Natalie Dormer looks to be about double the age that Margaery is meant to be. Oh well, they've done pretty solid casting so far!

Posted by: Ltd. at August 24, 2011 12:04 PM

Robert Pugh is exactly as I pictured Craster. Damn you for getting me excited, TK.

Posted by: admin at August 24, 2011 12:09 PM

As long as the wolves feature more prominently this season, I will be happy. I'm all about the wolves.

Posted by: PaddyDog at August 24, 2011 12:14 PM

It looks like pretty great casting to me.

You forgot an important one: Jaqen H'ghar is Tom Wlaschiha.

That is strange we haven't heard about the Reeds yet.

Moving Jeyne up so that we meet her sooner makes sense to me, and I think it can be done without adversely affecting the plot.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at August 24, 2011 12:16 PM

I'm REALLY happy with these casting choices. They all look great, as far as I can see. Especially Stannis - he looks perfect for the role. And I have high hopes for Roose Bolton's creepiness, after seeing this.

Posted by: GwenBear at August 24, 2011 12:17 PM

Did we ever get a post for "A Dance with Dragons"?

Posted by: Fredo at August 24, 2011 12:23 PM

I'm not seeing Dormer as Margaery. I don't know what age that actress is, but that photo makes her look 30, not 16.

And Brienne will need to be made up but if you look at her bone structure, I think they can make her look pretty mannish.

Christina Hendricks would NOT have made a good Melisandre, no matter how great she looks in red.

Not digging the face of Gilly. But that's probably because I've only ever seen her in Skins and I didn't like that character. She strikes me as too petite/fragile-looking to have survived life in the Craster clan.

Curious as to why Jeyne Westerling,a comparatively minor character, is the big news though?

Posted by: Wednesday at August 24, 2011 12:41 PM

Natalie Dormer as Margaery Tyrell is brilliant on so many levels. She blew me away as Anne Boleyn so I have no doubt she'll be able to handle this perfectly. Very excited.

Posted by: beckster at August 24, 2011 12:41 PM

Love all of them but Craster. I agree with McSquish....too broad.

Posted by: chad at August 24, 2011 1:05 PM

I agree with ForbiddenDonut, the lack of Tullys is perplexing.
As for the casting, I have no qualms whatsoever, and have complete faith in the casting department for Game of Thrones.

Posted by: Brett at August 24, 2011 1:11 PM

I think every one will look pretty spot on once they're Westeros-ified in their costumes and hair and makeup.

Just as my post Dance With Dragons fervor has started to wane, these casting announcements have gotten me all stoked about the show again. I may just have to re-read A Clash of Kings before the season starts.

Posted by: Angeleno Ewok at August 24, 2011 1:11 PM

I haven't read any of the books so I have no idea if this is good casting or not but...HOORAY! Cassie from Skins will be on my TV again!

Posted by: Bea Pants at August 24, 2011 1:13 PM

Natalie & Carice? Yes please!

Posted by: Revenant Shadow at August 24, 2011 1:26 PM

@fredo: The stuff with Jeyne & Robb happens, chronologically, during ACoK.

Posted by: silkymoonshine at August 24, 2011 1:26 PM

I have never ONCE pictured Melisandre as Christina Hendricks. Not the right body type, facial features, or hair. Red does not equal RED.

Posted by: Snath at August 24, 2011 1:48 PM

Curious as to why Jeyne Westerling,a comparatively minor character, is the big news though?

Probably because she plays a major role in the events of "Storm of Swords". As siklymoonshine said, she begins here but grows in importance as the story goes.

And I'm with Snath, I never pictured Melisandre as busty Christina Hendricks. Van Houten is more what I had in mind.

Posted by: Fredo at August 24, 2011 1:57 PM

I'm pretty happy with the casting. I agree that the girl cast as Margaery looks too old, but hopefully they'll use all that TV magic to youthen her a bit. I'm also perplexed as to the lack of Tullys and Reeds...

Posted by: KatSings at August 24, 2011 3:57 PM

I recall reading in an interview with one of the producers that cetain characters were ommitted, combined with others, etc. in order to make the books filmable. So, if there are casting choices that you think need to be made that have not, that may be the reason why. There's one in particular that the producer brought up, but I consider that a spoiler.

Posted by: Mrcreosote at August 24, 2011 3:58 PM

And we have to wait til April 2012 for this?

Posted by: Sean at August 24, 2011 4:01 PM

Overall happy with the casting, though I was one of the ones hoping the rumors that Christopher Eccleston was up for the role of Stannis. Ah well. As for the lack of Tullys, I'm sure casting is by no means complete. I seem to recall reading somewhere that the Blackfish might not be in this season, though.

What I'm waiting for is the choice for Ramsey Bolten, honestly. They might be playing that one close to the vest, though, for fear of spoilers.

Posted by: SJ at August 24, 2011 5:07 PM

Margaery Tyrell is SIXTEEN YEARS OLD. Natalie Dormer is, what? 30?? You're telling me that she's going to convincingly play an 18 year old in six years if the series follows the books (one book=one season?) I'm sorry. I find it really hard to swallow. She's supposed to be roughly the same age as Sansa and Danaerys. No. No no no no no no. I HATE that casting. As far as everybody else goes, I think they all look pretty good (only seeing them in action will sell me for sure, though).

Posted by: meilufay at August 24, 2011 5:51 PM

They've aged up nearly every character in the show. Why complain now?

Posted by: Duvall at August 24, 2011 7:29 PM

Nobody's mentioned Ser Davos..Cunningham looks perfect for the role. As for Brienne, it'll be easier enough to chop her hair and put her in some manly armor. I'm sure she'll be good.

Posted by: stryker1121 at August 24, 2011 7:43 PM

...I'm two-thirds of the way through Game of Thrones and can't put it down!

Figures I start a really awesome book series the same week I start school, just so I know I'll not pay attention in class.

Posted by: lbeees at August 24, 2011 8:06 PM

a 30-year-old Margaery Tyrell is gonna look pretty ridiculous next to 16-year-old Joffrey

Posted by: John. G. at August 24, 2011 9:32 PM

When I look at This picture Van Houten might work as The Red Witch.

Posted by: John. G. at August 24, 2011 9:35 PM

Yeah I'm not really thinking Gwendoline is too attractive to be Brienne. That said this is all perfect casting.

Also Margaery (or whatever her name is in real life) will be fine. I tried watching the first season of the Tudors and she plays underage believably.

Posted by: aroorda at August 24, 2011 9:50 PM

First Chris now Cassie? GoT is just taking all of the best characters from Skins.

Posted by: DominaNefret at August 24, 2011 9:52 PM

I always pictured Craster as more like a long-haired Bill Nighy, so this casting doesn't quite work for me. Their choice for Stannis Baratheon needs a stronger chin in my opinion, though it may just be that the chosen picture isn't anything like an expression you would see on the character.

Melisandre looks almost perfect, and I think with some false teeth and a broken nose Brienne will turn out to be an inspired choice as well.

Posted by: Chugga at August 24, 2011 9:59 PM

Stannis Baratheon needs a stronger chin in my opinion

God, I love the internet.

Posted by: The Other Agent Johnson at August 24, 2011 10:25 PM

Roose Bolton? Who cares. I'm more curious about Ygritte. Psyched about Gwendoline Christie, actually. I mean doesn't that just look like a face she would make when Jaime's unexpectedly nice to her? Spot on, I say.

And if Peter Dinklage is what we're considering "hideously ugly" these days, that women's a goddamn supermodel.

Of course, everyone's about a generation too old for their roles but that's apparently how HBO rolls, so no comment there.

Posted by: AM at August 25, 2011 2:46 AM

Jeyne Poole, no?

From what I heard, Gwendolyne Christie looked right in makeup.

Dude looks good for Seaworth

Posted by: Protoguy at August 25, 2011 3:18 AM

Mark Strong will forever be Stannis Baratheon to me. idgaf.

Posted by: duckandcover at August 25, 2011 3:45 AM

Yay, Go Carice!

Posted by: Magiel at August 25, 2011 4:11 AM

Michael McElhatten isn't creepy looking enough to be Roose. They're going to need to get creative with the colored contacts if they're going to hit the mark with that one.

Posted by: Kolby at August 25, 2011 7:52 AM

Hollywood always casts female actors prettier than their characters are described in the novels.

The first two that come to mind are Bella Swan (Twilight, duh!)and Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games) who are each repeatedly described as plain, awkward and not very pretty. But I guess plain and not very pretty doesn't put asses in the seats as easily.

BTW..Peter Dinklage in one sexy little mutherfucker and better win an Emmy. just sayin.

Posted by: wsapnin at August 25, 2011 9:37 AM

Hannah Murray!?!!?!? Fuck yeah!

Posted by: Minto at August 25, 2011 9:57 AM

Yeah, if you've seen van Houten as the witch in The Black Plague, she's PERFECT for Melissandre. And I think everyone's gettng caught up in the photos posted here. Dormer was totally believable as an 18yr old in The Tudors, and Christie definitely can bring the Brienne. I think the fact that she's like 6'4" will seal the deal.

Posted by: space oddity at August 25, 2011 10:46 AM

Margarey is too old, Yara is too young. IMAO.

Posted by: Miss Beca at August 25, 2011 11:58 AM

McElhatton and Liam Cunningham are two great Irish actors...... can't wait to see this!
