Here’s your answer. K-Stew (along with Tron: Legacy’s Garrett Hedlund) has been offered the role of Ky. Hedlund was offered Kaneda.

Just to drive the point home:

Let’s all just go ahead and start burning shit down, OK?

OK.

I certainly don't hate the girl -- I liked "Adventureland," though she hardly carried that movie. She's modestly pretty and can't act much, so bravo to her for making a career out of that. It's not her fault she keeps getting cast. What I don't get is what other people see in her. Is she a franchise star and does she continue to get cast BECAUSE she's only modestly pretty and can't act much? Is Everygirl able to identify with that? Is it precisely the things we don't like about her that keep getting her work?

It's not about whether K Stew or whatshisblandfuckingface's acting ability, it's about adopting something Japanese with Japanese protagonists with Japanese name and giving them to Caucasian actors.

FUCK. YOU. HOLLYWOOD. WITH. A. CHAINSAW!

Posted by: yocean at November 16, 2011 11:18 AM

, , I think it's mostly that she's riding on a pretty strong wave thanks to the Twilight madness, and the studios are fighting to get her into their movies while she's still pretty famous. I have a feeling that once Twilight is done she'll disappear completely, because honestly, she's just not that interesting an actor. And I don't even know if having her in a movie is a draw (wasn't that rocker movie a bomb?), but studios are dumb and must think people go see Twilight because of her.

'Garrett Hedlund': Not only does Hollywood grow these pod-people in a petri dish, it names them by throwing darts onto a board covered with macho, glottal stop-like syllables.

That video was the first time I've seen any of the Twilight movies but the focus on something ridiculous such as breathing could be done with any actor to make them look like crap. Have you seen the vid of Emily Watson's eyebrows? And wasn't there one floating around here with scene after scene of an actress crying? I'm not convinced this actress is untalented... I've seen her in several 'real' movies and she was quite good.

Posted by: snapnhiss at November 16, 2011 11:41 AM

figgy,

But my question is more: How did she land the "Twilight" gig in the first place? Again, like I said, is she supposed to be Everygirl, all the ones who aren't the Homecoming queen or the head cheerleader, all the ones who lack the confidence to smile brilliantly when the hot guys come around, and only know how to bite a lip?

Because I'd kind of understand that. I wouldn't understand why they picked her out of probably thousands of modestly pretty aspiring actresses who can't act very much. But I'd understand it perfectly if that's what they were aiming for in the character. "We need somebody who's pretty, but not TOO pretty, and we need somebody who can act, but not TOO well."

What this probably should tell us is that for whatever flaws she may have, I'm going to guess Stewart shows up on time and hits her marks and isn't a problem on the set. If she understands that she's lucky to have this gig despite her limited looks and talent and she carries herself like a pro, then she'll at least have my respect and should probably have ours ...

Did I just defend her? I guess I did.

I have decided that K Stew is this generation's Keanu Reeves. I'm actually sort of inspired that we have a female version.

I suspect we'll keep seeing her in things (until her Hollywood actress age-out happens) and be mystified every time.

Also? Who else was going to be Bella? Can you possibly imagine anyone else as Bella? Anyone with too much personality would never have survived the dialogue (or lack thereof). Anyone too pretty would never have been bought as an "every girl". She's sort of perfectly cast.

From Commentary, The Musical

"NOBODY’S ASIAN IN THE MOVIES
NOBODY’S ASIAN ON TV
IF THERE IS A PART THERE FOR US
IT’S A NINJA, A PHYSICIAN
OR A GOOFY MATHEMATICIAN
OR A GROUPIE IN THE CHORUS
THAT’S ME"

With just the sound it's basically a porno audiobook.

Posted by: Marcela at November 16, 2011 12:17 PM

Um...did I just hear Bella Swan secretly orgasm?

Posted by: Nadine at November 16, 2011 12:21 PM

Why do I suddenly feel like projectile vomiting?

Posted by: The Wanderer at November 16, 2011 12:34 PM

Wait, what? Akira is still happening? Is it happening the same way it's been happening for the past, I don't know ten years?

Rather get more uppity over the Oldboy remake.

Posted by: googergieger at November 16, 2011 12:37 PM

maybe a rabid Team Jacob fan will shank her during the next premier and we will be free of her "perfomances" for good?

Oh, I know! pls piss off Steven Spielberg KStew. Pretty please?

Posted by: haplo at November 16, 2011 12:52 PM

I don't think the biting of the lip is a K.Stewart affectation - the Bella character constantly bites her lower lip in the books. CONSTANTLY. That's her thing.

I agree with , that KStweart/Bella is supposed to be generic everygirl. I belive that's part of the appeal. Who the fuck thinks they are Harry Potter or Katniss material at that age? Boring, plain, not-particularly-good-at-anything is much more prevalent.

Oh, and I firmly belive the KSteward girl despises the part and thus can't hide the embarrassment onscreen (or off). I mean, wouldn't you be mortified?

Posted by: the other courtney at November 16, 2011 12:53 PM

Thank you, yocean and BierceAmbrose. When a Japanese story full of Japanese characters is being cast with exclusively white actors, the last thing I'm concerned about is whether the lead actress is going to spend too much time biting her lip.

Posted by: Artemis at November 16, 2011 12:59 PM

Akira is overrated anyway.

That's right - turn your rage upon me!

Posted by: DarthCorleone at November 16, 2011 2:18 PM

Who's "Ky"?

i think you meant "Kei."

Posted by: Scott at November 16, 2011 2:40 PM

@DarthCorleone

The movie is a jumbled experimental mess. The original managa, however, is rather brilliant.

To be honest though you there ain't much actressin going on over in Japan. I can't think of many actresses who can carry to role outside of Shibasaki Kou and Kikuchi Rinko. Japan, unfortunately, has a very big problem with not developing it's female leads. Females tend to be based on their ability to sell random gummi fruits in charming CMs instead of ability. When they age, they just usher in a new crop that goes as equally underdeveloped.

But Christ Kristen Stewart...

Posted by: Ren at November 16, 2011 4:57 PM

"I have decided that K Stew is this generation's Keanu Reeves."

YES. That's exactly what she is. Someday she may reach the lofty heights of looking depressed on a bench.

Posted by: leelee at November 16, 2011 6:42 PM

Didn't y'all used to live Kristen Stewart when she was in Adventureland?

Posted by: Lucas at November 16, 2011 8:47 PM

Let’s all just go ahead and start burning shit down, OK?

Sorry, TK, I just now got your message. Let's meet downtown at midnight (I'll bring the gasoline.)

Posted by: Uriah Creep at November 16, 2011 9:06 PM

So I take it this is what the sex scene will consist of in the new movie

Posted by: Candy at November 17, 2011 12:58 AM

This is fine with me. I don't see race.

No, that's not right... I don't see races - other than white that is. All films with foreigners in just look empty to me, so I'll be intrigued to finally see a version of Akira that isn't about self-propelling motorcycles and mysterious explosions.

Posted by: Ender at November 17, 2011 8:00 AM

@Ren

I would be fine with an actress of Asian ethnicity. There are enough to go around outside of Japan.

Posted by: Qualtinger at November 17, 2011 8:28 AM

@Qualtinger

I have more then a slight problem with the mixing and matching of one area of Asia for another. I understand that it's better then 0, but I think it propagates the idea that Asians are interchangeable. All dem Asians don't look alike.

Posted by: Ren at November 17, 2011 3:16 PM

What? If you're not going to include any Asian actors, at least have the decency to give them non-Asian names and call it a remake for Western audiences...can anyone really take it seriously when give Garret Hedlund a name like Shotaro Kaneda? Does that make the slightest shred of sense?
