I'm.Interested

After a nice turn as Inception’s (arguably?) intended target, Cillian Murphy is headed back to his villainous roots in Andrew Niccol’s (Gattaca) next science fiction film, I’m.mortal. Murphy is reported to be in final negotiations to play an officer in a corrupt police force called “Timekeepers”.

I’m.mortal takes place in a future Logan’s Run-ish world where each person’s aging gene is turned off at 25. Time is the new currency and the way to control population. Rich people can live forever, but the poor must bargain and bank time to continue their lives. In an odd bit of casting, Justin Timberlake plays a poor man who suddenly receives a wealth of time and becomes the target of a murder investigation. He kidnaps a beautiful heiress (Amanda Seyfried) and goes on the run with the Timekeepers in hot pursuit.

While the premise is interesting Justin Timberlake is not, so the addition of Murphy could bring this up a level. His character is described as “precise as the time he keeps” (I’m picturing a sharp uniform, nightstick tapping his hand…oh yes, put pull me over, Officer.) But obviously, what matters here is the pretty. Really, what good would any of this be without it?

Cillian Murphy has the crazy eyes. And I mean the Johnathon Rhys Myers thousand yard stare lock the car doors and back out of the driveway he's coming for us crazy eyes.

(I’m picturing a sharp uniform, nightstick tapping his hand…oh yes, put pull me over, Officer.)

Boioioinnnngggg.

So, I have to say, I actually quite enjoy the Timberlake. As an AC-TOR, I mean. I really couldn't tell you off the top of my head what I've seen him in, but I know I've seen him in a couple of things and I liked him. (SNL, I guess? That stupid, stupid movie where they kidnap that kid and they're not gonna kill him and then they wind up killing him? Something else, too?)

After finally seeing Inception, it is safe to say that Cilian Murphy is a new favorite. I've always liked him, but his performance was so strong in this movie, I have developed an elevated opinion of him.

As soon as the series of dreams begins, the weight of the dream is on Cilian Murphy's shoulders. Obviously, it is the job of every actor to behave as if the situation they're in is beleivable, but it is rarely so woven into the plot. If the audience was to believe that these people were in a dream, it was so vital that the DREAMER beleived it just as strongly. If the dreamer had handed in a less than astounding performance, you don't beleive in the dream, and so you don't beleive in the movie.

I've got an eye on you, you Irish dog.

I could make lots of comments about Cillian Murphy, or Justin Timberlake, or possibly interesting but possibly going off the rails sci-fi concepts, or how much pure raw "style" Gattaca had (that's a compliment), or T/timecops (Jean-Claude Van Damme, anyone?), but INSTEAD, this is what leaps out at me:

"25"

So, three decades after Logan's Run, when our life expectancy is arguably longer, our "golden age" of youth is actually foreshortened from 30 to 25 years??!?? I hate everyone.

Oh the picture... I think I'm having a hot flush. I hope you're happy Cindy, you have turned me into my mother.

Posted by: squeeziee at August 9, 2010 5:57 PM

And you deliberately picked the creepiest picture you could find.

Posted by: Jay at August 9, 2010 6:07 PM

Oh, this sounds...interesting premise...very interesting...very...

Justin Timberlake...serious actor? I...I...aw, I'm not big on...Seyfried...meh...

OH that...can't think straight...SO blue and pretty...gaagah...

Can he just marry me already? I have blue eyes too. Our children will have sapphires where their pupils should be. I need to shut up. Badly.

Yeah, "Logan's Run" was such a great movie, let's redo it. Maybe it'll be much better than the original, like "Ocean's Eleven." But I kinda doubt it.

Posted by: Slash at August 9, 2010 6:13 PM

Jay, that picture is not creepy. I promise. yes, he does a good creep/villain but that picture is just a big heap of gorgeous with a side of fuzzy puppies.

Also he was my favorite part of Sunshine. Was I the only one who thought that movie was supposed to be sci-fi, and not horror?

Pretty boy? Who creepydoucheface? Pleeeaze.

Posted by: balenga at August 9, 2010 7:07 PM

Anne (in Reno): I was able to understand the horror elements when seeing where the captain was coming from (that it was nature's course to let the sun die and science shouldn't prevent that from occurring) but that's not to say I necessarily liked that direction. Even though the elements were handled nicely, it did feel like a complete shift in the tone of the movie.

Oh you boys, jealousy is so not attractive.

Posted by: Cindy at August 9, 2010 8:06 PM

I have never, ever, ever wished I looked like that.

Posted by: Jay at August 9, 2010 8:22 PM

Tragically, when ever I read the title of this film, all I can think of is that dumb Scrubs arc where they make a film called Dr. Acula.

In an odd bit of timing I caught Red Eye on network TV Saturday night in which Cillian plays an extremely creepy assassin asshole. Sunday I took myself to see Inception not knowing he was in it. I thought he was great in both roles, although I saw similarity in both characters as they needed to be very self-possessed.

In both movies his eyes are incredibly blue. It would be hard to say no to a nice man with eyes like that. On the other hand, in Red Eye he did scare the shit out of me, pretty eye color be damned. I thought he made a very sympathetic protagonist in 28 Days Later.

I'm torn, is what I'm saying.

Posted by: Viking at August 9, 2010 8:47 PM

I meant jealous of the attention, not necessarily his looks.

Posted by: Cindy at August 9, 2010 8:52 PM

O good lord he is off the hook sexxaaaaay in that scary-creepy-kiss-me-or-kill-me type way.. He's also like 10 years younger than I. Oh, I'm so ashamed of mybadself.

Posted by: cellynd at August 9, 2010 8:53 PM

Not really sure I'm ok with that!! better ask my friends met on ____ Sugarmommamatch .c o m _____ know what? I do think people I met there are hot and sincere! Desipte the actual so-called Age Gap, we get along together splendidly!! and I'm even thinking about romance there!! lol

Posted by: ashly at August 9, 2010 8:53 PM

Hey! I am not a boy! And if I were I would never wish to have that face! Honest.

Posted by: balenga at August 9, 2010 8:55 PM

I fucking loved Logans Run as a kid.
I even like the sound of this movie. EXCEPT for the inclusion of Timberlake.
WTF. Get a fucking actor.

Bitch, please! Nobody here cares whether you're OK with that. Yeah, go ask your "friends" what you should think.

Posted by: MM at August 9, 2010 9:00 PM

I love Cillian Murphy. LOVE.
Not so much the Justin, but I would overlook it.
Logan's Run fucking rocks, and this movie sounds like someone really liked parts of it, mainly the age limit and the running and nothing else. So instead of a commentary on youth and consumerism, we'll be getting...um...who cares? Cillian Murphy. YAY!!!

Posted by: Chickaboom at August 9, 2010 10:42 PM

I'm gonna get on the creepy boat with Cillian Murphy. This boat will have Javier Bardem with his bowl haircut, Nicole Kidman who doesn't know she's a ghost, Nurse Ratched and Quentin Tarantino (in any form). It's a crowded boat.

I should also probably say that I'm a girl, and picturing myself waking up to that face gives me the heebie jeebies.

Posted by: denesteak at August 9, 2010 10:44 PM

See, now, I'm also a girl, and imagining myself waking up to that face gives me a lady boner.

Diff'rent strokes, as they say...

Mr. Julien does script consulting for Andrew Niccol and apparently he's a great guy. Check out his lovely blurb at scriptguy.com

I think this is the face Cillian Murphy makes whilst coiling the piano wire around his hands in anticipation of several illegal and horrifying acts.

Dude. He's got the crazy eyes.

Alternate jokes:

I'm.Frightened

Thank goodness he kidnaps a beautiful heiress. You only want to make off with people whom God has given to with both hands.

After the age of 25, do they make you keep your d*ck in a box?
