I'm on a Bus on a Psychedelic Trip

Enter-The-Void.jpg

Enter the Void is the latest film by Gaspar Noé (Irreversible, I Stand Alone) and by latest, I mean over a year old (it debuted at Cannes 2009). Seems like we’re always behind on those fancy French films; case and point Vincent Cassel’s Mesrine, for which we’ve been waiting since 2008 (out in limited release August 27th).

Described as a surrealist roller coaster ride, Enter the Void is the story of a brother watching over his sister, with a bit of a twist - the drug dealing brother is killed and it’s his ghost keeping tabs on his sibling. From what I can gather events are out of sequence and filled with sex, trippy camera work and special effects. As is often the case with controversial filmmakers, the reviews are mixed and range from “silly” to “repulsive” and “a marvel”. In other words, I’m practically guaranteed to see this.

Maybe I'm reading too much into these blurbs. But they worry me.

"This is an artist who's trying to show us something we haven't seen before."
It sounds like he's trying, but not succeeding. He has a good idea, but didn't back it up with substance.

"So visually seductive it essentially flips the brain off switch for you"
I don't like turning my brain off. I like movies to keep my brain on.

That being said, it does look quite good. I will probably see it.

I'm in.

A-shaef, you're reading in to those blurbs too much. Blurbs are for the modern masses, aka: idiots. The average film goer will go "Oh snap! It's so awesome my brain shuts off?!"

What average film goer will see this? No one. Not a single one.

Sex and trippy lights? Sold.

It's a French movie...surely sex (or at least nudity) was a given?

Please fix the spelling error in the title.

Oh please please please.

That's what I get for being lazy and copying a lyric. Fixed!

Oh thank you thank you.

(I guess I should've threatened you with, "I'm thinkin' of you, you're out there, so say your prayers.")

People knowing the song to which I refer is payment enough. Now give me your best sneer.

I don't know if I'll see this, but you used lyrics from my favorite Billy Idol song, so it's all good.

Saw this at TIFF, and I'm sure the movie has been edited down, but I thought it was about ohhh 45 minutes too long.
This movie truly is a 'trip', and that is the only way to describe it. At the screening they asked anyone who is prone to seizures to leave (seriously). Apparently, he wanted to simulate an acid trip and he did a great job.
I cannot in good conscience recommend this movie, but I can say it will blow your mind.

Oh ya, and you see all those psychedelic effects...that's like 65% of the movie

Looks like this movie will give people seizures due to the flashing colors, like those cartoons did to the little kids about 10 years or so ago. Anyway, this looks like shite, and I mean that in a bad way.

I'm very much looking forward to this.

Irreversible was one of the most challenging films I've ever seen. The way Noe twisted your perspective of events and revealed our ability to jump to conclusions was masterful.

The violence was tough to sit through, but it wasn't without purpose. And the force-fed uncomfortable production values were not without merit.

And it had Monica Belluci!
