I'm a Man. I'm a Slut. I'm a Man...I'm a Dream Divine

I don’t think “The Cape” knows exactly what it wants to be (other than a hit), nor do I think NBC knows what the hell it’s doing (other than trying to create a hit) but damned if I’m not enticed by every teaser I’ve seen. The premise is stupid, the superhero is questionable, the music is bad, the retorts are ridiculous and spoon fed (“You’re the one wearing long underwear and a cape.” “It’s my most annoying feature.”). And still, I can’t wait to check out this idiotic show. Its appeal is most definitely in the cast: Summer Glau, James Frain, Keith David, Vinnie Jones, though I don’t know much about the lead, David Lyons. Maybe they can just keep Glau in all his scenes because she elevates just about anything she’s in.

Here are the latest promos (In the interest of preventing ear bleeding, I recommend turning the sound way down for the first one):

“The Cape” premieres on January 9, 2011 and follows a former cop, Vince Faraday (Lyons), turned superhero after having been framed for a murder and left for dead. The Cape takes on the persona of his son’s favorite comic book character, receives training from a criminal/circus ringleader and sets out to rid the city of corruption and bad guys. Yes, it makes no sense. No, you can’t look away.

Actually, I was interested in this (mostly for Glau) until I saw a teaser. Then I thought, "Man, that looks really dumb and cliched." I'll give it a chance, but no way am I excited.

WHAT. THE. FUCK? who the fuck in the name of fuck made this? it looks stupid as shit. you know who has a badass cape too? BATMAN. dumb motherfuckers. make a batman tv show, and spend miillions on top of millions on each episode, so that its actually good. i understand the need to make original material, but by god, cant they actually make it like not fucking terrible? i havent seen this travesty to television yet, but i know it will be bad. Moon Knight would also be an awesome character to have on the television. fuck whoever made this shit. Summer Glau should stick to doing shitty Joss Whedon movies and shows.

Soooo, Vinnie Jones is Killer Croc, 'cept Cockney instead of black?

Also, that other villain is Andrew W.K.? You can't stop the party, Cape.

This will last 6 episodes. Count 'em.

but... but... JAMES FRAIN. BEING BAD. swoon.

Posted by: kristin at December 13, 2010 5:50 PM

I don't even give it half that, Johnny Von Awesome. But since I don't think they'd cancel the series in the middle of an episode, I'll give it three. Tops.

Superheroes are so ten minutes ago.

Worse news for NBC: your network is so ten years ago.

But, o.k., maybe I'll give Summer Glau a chance.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at December 13, 2010 5:57 PM

Sounds like Darkman.

Posted by: Brenton at December 13, 2010 6:16 PM

Okay, not really like Darkman, but sounds like a cookie cutter origin.

Posted by: Brenton at December 13, 2010 6:29 PM

But.... but... Keith David....

{whimper}

Yeah, I'm not absolutely ruling out the possibility that it could be decent and entertaining, but those are some long, loooooong odds.

They should so a show called Summer Glau: Show Killer!

BAM!

Posted by: figgy at December 13, 2010 10:08 PM

*do.

I'll show myself out.

BAM.

Ever since Summer Glau's character slept with Mac, the Mr hates anything she's in.

Yes, he holds grudges against cheating wives, even if they're just tv characters.

I haven't been impressed with a single show she's been in, and she sure as shit wasn't the reason I watched Firefly, so I don't hold out much hope for The Cape. Showkiller, indeed.

Sounds like Darkman.

Posted by: Brenton at December 13, 2010 6:16 PM

Not Darkman - it sounds like Night Man:

Which had the advantage of being in syndication so it could at least be a bit sleazy.

and people get PAID for this?

there isn't an original ANYTHING in these clips.

I'LL PASS.

Posted by: logan at December 14, 2010 11:15 AM

It looks pretty awful. I give it TWO episodes before cancellation. I also don't share the love for this Summer Glau person. She is quite unattractive.

The one thing that's been eating at me - seriously - is how on earth they are going to create the necessary unresolved sexual tension?

As shown in the preview, the guy is happily married before getting face-stapled and whatnot. But clearly he's going to have a sexually charged working relationship with Summer Glau. Because this is television.

Therefore I've decided that the wife is going to bite it by the end of the pilot. So I'll watch at least one episode, so that I can nod smugly to myself.
