And this is why porn stars are named Bambi?

Pretty sure I got them all right, but there being any question just about says it all about Rooney.

Stop trying to tell me this girl is attractive, people.

Her "ballerina" skirt picture looks like Jim Carey doing that Black Swan SNL skit.

Ooooh. I'm Marilyn Manson. I'm the freaky poet provocateur that freaks out your parents because I wear lipstick OUTSIDE THE FREAKING LINES! My makeup is of profound and indeterminate depth so my thoughts must be too. Fear me!

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at January 14, 2011 11:17 AM

Alternate response:

Marilyn Manson is the physical manifestation of teen angst looking wistfully at its reflection in the mirror.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at January 14, 2011 11:19 AM

While she looks damn fuckin hot in the getting tattooed picture, she's gonna have to work fucking hard to get me to accept her as Salander.

Posted by: zeke the pig at January 14, 2011 11:21 AM

What? They look completely different. This post is ridiculous and lowbrow.
Outside of the costume makeup, I can assure you that Mara is quite conventionally attractive and fresh-looking. The kind that you would even make misogynistic remarks about and lust after in a puerile way!

Posted by: Nubbies Away at January 14, 2011 11:22 AM

She looks like she needs a meal.

Closing italics bracket, maybe?

Posted by: Markus at January 14, 2011 11:26 AM

Ah, nevermind. It's better now. The whole page was italicized when it loaded last time.

Posted by: Markus at January 14, 2011 11:27 AM

I just realized what a titanic douche lord Marilyn Manson is. Seriously dude, find a facial expression other than a vacant blow-up doll stare and quit doing Goth Ziggy Stardust. No one cares anymore.

Posted by: stardust at January 14, 2011 11:29 AM

Is the US version changing the title to Girl With A Dragon Tattoo? That seems completely unnecessary but not surprising since they're already remaking a perfectly fine on it's own one year old movie.

Posted by: Paultera at January 14, 2011 11:31 AM

In defense of Marilyn Manson (oddly not the first time I've said that) his ridiculous look was part of his larger mocking gimmick. Every bit of his music was an intentional copy of someone better be it as a cover or just in style.

Actually, that doesn't sound like it's actually in defense but he was kind of genius in his rip-offs, if that makes any sense.

Posted by: Paultera at January 14, 2011 11:40 AM

Paultera, I'm glad Fincher's making his own version because he's a very capable director and I found the first two in the Swedish trilogy completely unimpressive and unsatisfying (I haven't seen the final film).

Posted by: sars at January 14, 2011 11:41 AM

Have any of you even read any of the books? Fincher is pretty dead-on with his depiction of Salander, who is explicitly described as being very thin. And she's not supposed to be really attractive (although I did find Noomi Rapace pretty in her own sort of way). My fear all along has been that Fincher would try to "American-ize" Salander and make her not as goth, not as skinny, not as freakish looking. However, he seems to be pushing the envelope with this a bit, which is good. I like the look of the film so far (although I'm having a hard time picturing *spoiler* that girl up there having sex with James Bond)

Posted by: Charlie at January 14, 2011 11:43 AM

Charlie, Rooney Mara's Salander also seems more fitting in that she looks younger and could be mistaken for a teenager which is how she's described in the books. As good as Noomi Rapace was, her Salander looked older than she should have (she couldn't have been mistaken for a teen...she looked 30), which bothered me slightly.

Posted by: sars at January 14, 2011 11:54 AM

Please tell me this 85-lb girl is going to land a punch in this movie and do some damage.

Known objects thinner than Rooney Mara:

John Travolta's hair.

The Baynis.

My tolerance for people who don't say "thank you" when you hold the door open for them.

My tolerance for people who use the elevator for less than 3 floors.

"The exhilarating tension between being and becoming."

John Boehner's masculinity.

I like the Manson with the fawn. Because that's from when he was fucking awesome. Yes, you may not know it - but there was a time when Manson could rock your fucking socks off.

Nowadays, not so much.

But there was a time.

Oh, yes.

Posted by: Skitz at January 14, 2011 11:59 AM

Yes Skitz and that time was before he understood what his nose was there for: sucking up enough blow to make Sigmund Freud jealous.

Posted by: bignick at January 14, 2011 12:10 PM

Even Manson's "rip it off and make it your own" shtick has been done before and done way better than he could ever hope to. And you'll never guess who did it... Color me still unimpressed.

Posted by: stardust at January 14, 2011 12:22 PM

Ok, Lisbeth "gets hers" plenty of times in the books (with several diff. people) but she's totally NOT about "look at me and my bewbies in the snow here, for you" - I feel like these stupid photo shoots that are always about t and a (cleavage and leather jacket, really?) totally do a disservice to the ass kicking, hot but not a sex object character from the books.

Posted by: ninetwenteetoo at January 14, 2011 12:52 PM

I'd still totally do Manson.

Posted by: Anna von Beav at January 14, 2011 1:24 PM

HOW IS THAT FAIR?!

You cant post incredibly sexy pictures of my newest girl crush with similar pictures of*shudder* Manson.

You'll make my dreams all weird and creepy.
Totally suing for emotional distress. Totally.

@ D-day

Never underestimate the skinny chick. I have weighed in at roughly 125lbs my entire adult life. I can also throw a man twice my size across a room (and I have) and break every bone in his arm while I do it. It is not about size or brawn, it is about technique, speed, and stamina. You don't have to be built like a brick shit-house to kick some serious ass. You have to know how to throw a punch using your whole body. You have to know how to use your opponent's size and strength against him/her.

The toughest mother fucker I ever knew was my blond, petite, smiley, late-middle aged martial arts teacher. She looked like a grandma, but she never, NEVER lost a sparring match even with people far younger, fitter, and bigger than she. It also didn't hurt that she had some big, brassy balls for a little lady.

Posted by: androstarr at January 14, 2011 3:08 PM

That second picture of Mara is awesome. I haven't seen the Swedish films, but I agree with the comments above about Rapace. In stills, she looks too old for the character. Salander's 4'11" and appears fragile and young. It belies her cunning and strength. She mostly looks the part, so I hope Mara delivers with the acting. I wanna see some Craig, though...his casting is perfect.

Just finished watching an interview with Eva Gabrielsson on swedish TV.
She´s the woman who lived with Stieg Larsson, but they were never married.(live-in-lover?)
Therefore an infected dispute over his legacy, with the relatives. It´s the law, it´s the morality/ethics, and all that crap.

Anyway, she said there MIGHT be a fourth part in the bookseries called Guds Hämnd or "Gods Revenge".
She was very vague about it, due to the dispute I imagine.
Just saying...

WHERE ARE HER EYEBROWS?!?

People with flesh-colored eyebrows creep me the fuck out! Gah!!!

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at January 14, 2011 6:06 PM

Agree with Charlie and sars that this Salander is more on par with how she's described in the books.

Also? These shots aren't promotional stills for the movie, per se. They were for a W Magazine shoot. So the sexualization isn't necessarily because that's what her character is in the film, but because that's just how the magazine shoot was, and we all know that magazines are all about t3h sex.

Even so, that's not to say that Lisbeth isn't a sexual creature in the book. She is acutely aware of her own sexuality and actually is written to enjoy sex, insofar that it's consensual. Furthermore, she's constantly described as having a uniquely sex-charged presence. So again, I don't think these photos depict something that's actually counter to Larsson's Salander.

Posted by: Amanda6 at January 14, 2011 6:55 PM

Damn I didn't realize she was that skinny. I almost feel like they overly-gothed her up, but it's been a long time since I read the first book.

I still want to know if they are having the actors do Swedish accents. The story wouldn't translate really to American soil because of the whole guardianship thing, but having the actors do Swedish accents is sure to a shit storm if it's happening.
