I See the Stars Come Out Tonight: Edward James Olmos, Colin Hanks and Mos (Def) Round Out "Dexter's" Season 6 Cast

After the mixed bag that was “Dexter,” Season 5 (really, they’re all mixed bags, aren’t they?), I sat back and wondered why I watch this show. I think it comes down to the fact that “Dexter” heartily embraces the dark side of life; taking us down mysterious—sometimes awful—and twisty trails with an interesting and quirky group of people. Michael C. Hall nails Dexter’s struggle with his own humanity, Jennifer Carpenter brings a depth to her character’s strengths and weaknesses not often seen in female television roles and the assorted side characters (Masuka, Batista and Quinn) are a mix of earnest and goofy, who bring necessary comic relief. Although each season is usually fraught with loose ends and meandering middles, “Dexter” has mastered the art of building to a frenetic last couple of episodes and decent finales.

“Dexter” is also reliable for getting great seasonal guest stars like Keith Carradine, Jonny Lee Miller, John Lithgow, Mark Pellegrino and a surprisingly effective Julia Stiles. And for its sixth outing, the show has outdone itself by signing on Academy Award nominated, Golden Globe and Emmy winning actor, Edward James Olmos. Olmos will be part of a major story arc, playing a “brilliant, charismatic professor of religious studies.” Also joining this season is Colin Hanks as “Travis, a highly intelligent expert on ancient artifacts who gets linked to a series of grisly murders in Miami,” Mos (the artist formerly known as Mos Def) as “Brother Sam, an ex-con who claims to have found religion but is still surrounded by violence” and Aimee Garcia (“Off the Map”) as Jamie, Harrison’s new nanny, who may or may not be Dexter’s new love interest.

Showtime says “Dexter” will be returning to its roots and that emphasis will be on Dex’s relationship with Deb, setting up the possibility that Deb may finally be exposed to the truth about her brother. Meanwhile, there are still a couple of roles to be filled, with casting calls having gone out for:

Chicago Mike: A thirty-something African-American homicide detective who possesses a finely turned BS detector. The Windy City native does not play well with Dexter or others (sounds a lot like our beloved Doakes).

Louis: A buddy of Masuka (C.S. Lee), who joins MMP as a new lab intern. Role calls for a Caucasian actor in his 30s who is “attractive in his own way.”

“Dexter” returns to Showtime, Fall 2011.

**Bonus late update: Billy Brown (“Lights Out”) just signed on as “Chicago Mike.”

like the cast but i felt very frustrated when they simply reset at the end of season five. let's hope going back to their roots will bring back a bit more of dexter's mojo.

i LOVE the idea of deb learning the truth about dexter. what a season cliffhanger that would be!

I love all three of these gentlemen.

This will be epic.

That must have been one amicable divorce. I really hope Dexter's and Debra's brother-sister chemistry doesn't suffer.

Wow, that sounds callous. I also hope that the divorce WAS amicable and Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter are OK with everything.

Barf, Dex, can't you just keep it in your pants for once? I'm bloody tired of your half-assed attempts at romance. I'm on team No Date Dexter for season 6. Any followers? I mean come on, guy, stick to what you're good at: sticking it to the bad guy.

See what I did there with the funnynotfunny? And yeah, mom IS proud.

I gave up after season three.
Either Debra is willfully clueless about Dex,or is just clueless.

Yes, I am most definitely on the No Date team for Dexter. The show's far more interesting when it's just Dexter trying to balance his murderous impulses with his humanity.

I'm with you, beet salad.

If they were going to have Deb find out about Dexter, they should have done it at the end of last season. At this point I just think she's willfully ignorant and would probably be in denial about the whole thing if he eventually gets caught.

SURPRISE, MOTHERFUCKER

I am also with beet salad, Dexter is always better when there's no romance, like in the brilliant season one.

I love this show but I definitely agree that the last season was a bit of a lull in the overall story. I would love to see the show go back to where it was with Season 1 - a more violent Dexter focused on satisfying his Dark Passenger and not making awkward attempts at a romantic relationship.
