How Do I Reach These Kids?

Between 1998’s American History X and 2006’s Lake of Fire, Tony Kaye has courted his share of controversy, and as his 2007-shot Black Water Transit sits on a shelf somewhere, the man’s already moving on with Detachment, a NYC school drama starring Marcia Gay Harden, Lucy Liu, James Caan, Christina Hendricks, Bryan Cranston, Blythe Danner and William Petersen.

Now, according to Variety, another name’s being added to the roster. Adrien Brody will play a substitute teacher through whose eyes we’ll experience “three weeks in the lives of high school teachers, administrators and students.” I’d usually groan at how treacly that sounds, but given that cast and this director’s particular knack for off-screen drama, here’s hoping that it turns out to be something special.
