'House of Cards' to Remain in Maryland

By Genevieve Burgess | Trade News | April 26, 2014 | Comments ()

This past week week I wrote about the fight over tax incentives for House of Cards in Maryland, a piece that I had sat on for over a week hoping to see if a resolution would come in time for me to add it to the piece. I finally decided that one more week wouldn’t make a difference, and hit the “publish” button.

Turns out, all of three days would have made a difference. House of Cards will be staying in Maryland for season 3. Governor Martin O’Malley and his staff have been working to make a deal for the last two weeks and it appears it was successful. Thousands of jobs will return to Maryland in the next month or so, and in the meantime I’ll keep kicking myself for deciding to run a piece too soon, particularly during a week when everyone wanted to talk about what happened on Game of Thrones. I’m sure all ten of you who read the original piece will be happy to have this resolution.

    That photo is just perfect!

Who knows. Maybe your article helped spur the result. "Damn, they're talking about this on the Internets. Let's get this passed before we get spammed or fished or whatever those kids do today."

Think of it this way - cosmically, publishing the piece probably helped the deal go through, just because the universe wanted to make you feel foolish.

I'm glad that everything was resolved satisfactorily.

Erm, it's Governor O'Malley, not Mayor.

That said, I'm glad they're coming back. They film a lot around where Mr. Modernlove works, so I get pretty hilarious stories. They also used the house of a professor I had to do some filming in. It reminds me of the days of Homicide when you knew someone who knew someone who's cousin was a dead body on the show.

It was interesting to me to watch all this happening because Carcetti O'Malley has made known his desire to run for President in 2016 and I he likes to look at these things as making powerful and well-positioned friends, making himself look better by really not doing much at all. However the deal was worked out, I'm happy to have them in my little city.

Tell us about the hilarious stories! Did you got to see Kevin and Robin?

  • Genevieve Burgess

Fixed, thank you. I think I just got very attached to the alliterative "Mayor Martin O'Malley" back from his Baltimore days and never made the mental shift. Governor Martin O'Malley just doesn't have the same flow.

  • Hooray! More extra work for me!

I read your piece and thought it was interesting.
