Hit Me With Your Next Best Shot

George-Clooney-in-The-American.jpg

We’ll never know just how many films out there have been salvaged by re-shoots, but like a changed release date, it’s far easier to view these tweaks as an omen. After all, if things had been going so well, why didn’t they get it right the first time around, hmmmm?

If rumors and rumblings are to be believed, Focus Features didn’t get their first look at the most recent cut of The American — director Anton Corbijn’s follow-up to his acclaimed debut, Control — until this week. That is to say, a mere month out from its North American bow.

Despite that studio, that street cred and a starring turn by George “Return of the Killer Tomatoes” Clooney, it’s not making an appearance at any of the prominent fall festivals, and just last month, Corbijn himself was blogging about the inclusion of Johan Leysen in these new scenes.

That is to say, a character who wasn’t even in the script a month ago.

Hey, who knows, maybe this is all for the better. We’ll find out soon enough. But even just looking at the shift in marketing, it’s hard to know how exactly The American is going to turn out and it’s easy to wonder if Focus even has a good idea for themselves.

My name is Johan Leysen, I'm here to rescue you.

When Some Like It Hot first screened it died. Billy Wilder went back and changed a couple of scenes and ended up with a masterpiece. I'm not saying that Corbijn is a Wilder, but there is still hope.

While the Pajiba readership doesn't strike me as much enthused about shooting sports, trust me: the choice of the Ruger Mini-14 as Clooney's sniper/hitman's weapon of choice is HILARIOUS.

It's a rifle known for decades as being capable of only mediocre (at best) accuracy at modest distances. It makes as much sense to give your master assassin a Mini-14 as it would to have Robert DeNiro drive a Prius in Ronin.

For those of us who enjoy both Pajiba and target shooting, that picture of a grim Clooney is just precious. The only way it could be any more ridiculous would be if they gave him a SuperSoaker or a Nerf gun.

I'll get the producers right on that.

The maligning of the mini-14/30 platform is almost entirely a
''hysterical INTERNET MEME'' adopted by frankly..MORONS- and is
nonsensical-
every time its mentioned, someone who is a poor/MARGINAL shooter or has never
owned a Mini shows up on cue with the same accuracy meme that they heard about, but personally know nothing about.

The ruger mini in either caliber will put ten rounds in a pie-plate
center mass within the DISTANCE limits of what a given .223 load is capable of, faster than a fine-bolt action high powered rifle can land one round.

Both the carbine (ar/mini) and the high caliber bolt gun have their suited use, and advantages in specific situations.

My guess is the producer chose the mini 14/30 since-
its uncommon these days, and aggressive looking while still being unfamiliar to most of the public-
unlike a AR platform which is EVERYWHERE and looks the same no matter who makes it, with the same overkill of a dozen tacticool attachments bolted onto it.

The Mini 14 has some tacticool looks/features but still has the pretty wood to be legitmately eye catching, and the addition of a military-style collapsible stock.
