Is it that odd a choice?

I dunno. I mean, I know he has musical skills, and I know he can play the hell out of a drum set, but I’ve just never been a big fan of Fred Armisen. I like Portlandia, but I think I’d like a lot more with anyone other than Armisen, who seemed to overstay his welcome on Saturday Night Live. I do appreciate the loyalty everyone on that show has for one another, however, and Armisen must be a better guy than his ex-wife Elisabeth Moss has implied.

Unfortunately, when I think of Armisen as bandleader, all I can think of is him doing his Lawrence Welk impression every night.

Anyway, according to Seth Meyers’ twitter account, “Fred will curate and lead the band, and continue to run it even when he’s off shooting Portlandia,” so there’s no concern about Armisen ditching his show to be on Meyers’.

Beware the implications of ex-wives, Dustin. They tend to be biased.

  • maddermonk

His "Nicholas Fehn" character was one of my favourite characters ever.

  • e jerry powell

    The hell?

  • Yocean

I think Fred Armisen is where comedy goes to die. But, you know, that's me.

  • Mrs. Julien

He'd have to ask Colin Quinn to skooch over.

  • Yocean

Oh I think Armisen will be a nice Douche Hipster sidekick to Quinn's assholery. But seriously, Colin Quinn do not irk me as much as Fred Armisen tho.

  • Vulgar.Prophet

i have a feeling this show will get the lowest ratings for late night ever

  • e jerry powell

    Lower than Carson Daly?
    Lower than Joan Rivers?

  • cruzzercruz

Fantastic news. I'm a huge fan of both.

  • HobokenGuy

What is every talk show host now going to be some worn-out SNL comedian?

  • Sean

Hmmm...I always assumed that Moss was the problem in that relationship. The whole scientology(I refuse to capitalize that crap)bullshit. That she was just using him in that way that all celeb scientologists use people.

  • Bodhi

That is one of the only celeb divorce stories I wish I knew details about

  • John G.

you're completely wrong about Fred Armisen. He is great.

  • loo shag brolley

And The Californians sketches are hilarious. (Not sarcasm.)

  • Bob Genghis Khan

Hate to say it, but like Fallon and Meyers, Armisen's acting career wasn't going to go anywhere, so this is probably a pretty safe choice.

  • RilesSD

Fred Armison's "cover" of The Beatles "Blackbird" at Howard Stern's Birthday show was fucking hilarious. It's Stern's favorite song and Armison did a purposefully bad version.

  • I think this could work out pretty well mostly because of the Meyers-Armisen partnership. If this was Armisen doing this randomly on some other show, I'd agree with it being an odd choice.

  • Catfish

I wish this was the band.

  • e jerry powell

I do believe that a couple of them need jobs at the moment.

  • TherecanbeonlyoneAdmin

And at least one needs a good lawyer.

  • Bodhi

YES. Its my favorite Christmas song

  • Pants-are-a-must

Yes! Excellent reason to NEVER SEE HIS SHOW.

  • kirivinokur

Yeah, he's that type of comedian who's not funny.

  • Enrique del Castillo

I kind of like Fred Armisen, I like he has his own show and he is doing his own thing though after watching 2 seasons of Portlandia I still don't understand what's the appeal.

  • He also would be a natural to fill the Andy Richter/Paul Schaeffer role in the show. Kind of a goofy guy to play off Meyers who is more straight laced.

  • Armisen has legitimate musical chops and he's going to be the perfect counter-balance to Meyers' often stiff delivery.

I think this is an inspired choice.

  • BrokenWindows

It's apparently an unpopular opinion, but I find seth meyers to be one of the most boring people to ever do weekend update. I can't imagine he'll be any better on a talk show. Fortunately, I despise the talk show format and won't watch it anyway!

  • TherecanbeonlyoneAdmin

If he leads the band while doing his impersonation of Prince at least twice it will all be worth it.

  • e jerry powell

That I'll give you. But that means getting Maya Rudolph to show up every once in a while.

  • mswas

    I'd go for that!

  • "Prince wants to show you this picture of a dove..."

  • Wait, what?
