"The people cannot have wells, and so they take rain water."

Hot diggity. HBO has picked up “Treme,” David Simon’s new series. Simon, of course, is the man behind “The Wire,” the greatest show to ever run on TV (s’true, look it up). He started working on “Treme” shortly after “The Wire” wrapped, turning his focus to post-Katrina New Orleans. Simon has talked about how the intent of this show is to intimately focus on the people, and the city itself, trying to rebuild themselves from the brink of utter devastation.

A new show from Simon (regardless of how many episodes we get — HBO is still negotiating this point) is a good thing. It’s an even better thing when it stars, among others, Wendell Pierce (Bunk on the “The Wire”) as a jazz musician, Steve Zahn, Kim Dickens, Clarke Peters and Melissa Leo (settle down, Boozehound!). I’m so very excited for this show.

And in other good HBO news, Peter Dinklage has signed on to star in the pilot for “Game of Thrones.” The pilot, to be directed by Tom McCarthy (who worked with Dinklage in The Station Agent), is based on a series of George R.R. Martin books (the Song of Fire and Iceseries) which apparently present a dark and violent medieval-type fantasy. I’m sure many of you are familiar with what I hear is a good series — tell us more.

Like I said yesterday, the McCarthy/Dinklage news is the best thing I've heard in a while. Peter Dinklage was George R.R. Martin's choice to play Tyrion, and I think he's the only actor who could do it justice.

Prisco has reviewed the book for Cannonball Read, so I won't try and steal his thunder (nor could I do a better job), so just go read his review.

For some reason, I read Clarke Peters as Clark Johnson and got all excited for a second..

Nothing against Clarke Peters, who's marvelous.

But David Simon and Melissa Leo working together again? That's fantastic.

Just curious, what's HBO run a month these days anyway? I had it eons ago and quickly decided the dreck/$ ratio was way too high.

I've read everything I could find in local news on the pilot that's already been shot. The most exciting thing I've read so far, in my opinion, is that a few local musicians (including my favorite, Kermit Ruffins!) are playing themselves in the pilot. So awesome.

Tyrion!!! It's a good thing Peter Dinklage is awesome because that role deserves some great actoring.

I am saddened that there exist people who have not read A Song of Ice and Fire please remedy the situation immediately. I hesitate to use "best x ever", but yeah...

Jamiepants, I once saw Kermit play with the Rebirth Brass Band and I must confess - one of the top ten concerts I've ever seen. Absolutely amazing. I have a couple of friends who road-tripped to New Orleans a week ago just to see them.

My only hope os that the show version of A Song of Fire and Ice will be more enjoyable than the book was to me. It was seriously the first book I ever regreted reading. 800+ pages of utter misery for me. The second book being Wizard's First Rule, which kinda makes me sad, reading all the general comments on this site, as I'm actually an avid fantasy reader and those two series did absolutely nothing for me. I don't know if it amuses me or causes the anger that those two series get tv shows while others I loved infinitely more get nothing.

Peter Dinklage is one of the hottest men in film. He makes me thi... No, I will not share this with you people.

I mean that as a compliment.

CinnabarriGirl,
I'm curious, what didn't you like about "A Game of Thrones"? You're the first person I've come across who read it and didn't like it.
The Ice and Fire series will translate well to TV because of the political turmoil and layers of intrigue. There are dozens of storylines to explore. HBO did well to grab it because medieval shows are poorly produced and written on basic cable.

Kballs,
For me it was a million little factors. I enjoy a good engaging story, but that first book seemed to take waaaay too many pages to explain what I felt were redundant aspects of the plot. And while I do realize that not all fantasy novels have to be light hearted faire, I just kept getting frustrated over the fact that I could not enjoy one single decent character without something incredibly horrible happening to them 5 minutes later. I really enjoyed the stories and characters of Daenerys Targaryen and Arya Stark, but everything else just dragged on depressingly until I just wanted the story to end. That coupled with the fact that there are 6 more books out there, 2 yet unwritten, made me realize this would probably turn out like the Robert Jordan books, and I washed my hands of the whole thing. I can say I did like the general writing style, most character developements, and dialog much, much better than Wizard's First Rule. In the end though, the idea of throwing myself into 5000 more pages of that particular story was just something I couldn't get into.

-Which is interesting 'cause I keep burdening Eddings's books on myself over and over again. I may be slightly masochistic.:P

A show about New Orleans doesn't really interest me, but that David Simon is doing it and it's on HBO will make it worth checking out.

The Dinklage news is excellent. I still don't see how this will work, but it will be fun to see them try and pull it off.

HBO is about 16.99 a month on DishTv. It is the pits right now. Might be more value to you to get the whole premium package for 43 bucks and downgrade the to basic satellite package. That's how I do. HBO's all family friendly right now while the other premiums are burning their spades. STARZ plays the best movies and may be getting better with its original programming. I just wish it would dump Crash.

I'm sure HBO will return to the old form by the summer, and I love the McCarthy/Dinklange news.

CinnabarriGirl,
