"Does the brain control you or are you controlling the brain?"

HBO has signed Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant up for a new show. But unlike “The Office” and “Extras,” this new show won’t star Gervais or Merchant. In live-action, anyways, since it’s going to be a 13-episode animated version of the “The Ricky Gervais Show,” the popular podcast starring the duo and Karl Pilkington, their bald-heady, weird, little friend.

I listened to the podcast regularly for the first dozen-or-so episodes. Although I stopped listening right around the time they started charging for it, I didn’t stop listening specifically because of that (even though I am a miserly Jew). Rather, I stopped listening because I found it getting awfully repetitive. It was very entertaining for a while, but it had devolved into constant ribbing on Pilkington and didn’t feel that fresh (particularly when they would do repeat bits like Pilkington’s sharing of news stories involving monkeys). That being said, I could see this working out very well as an animated show. I could also see it being the suck, if it’s the type of thing where it’s largely them talking with the animation visualizing what they’re talking about — those types of animated segments don’t work for me, especially in longform.

But we won’t be able to find out if this works or not for a while, as the show isn’t likely to premiere before early ‘10, at the soonest.

I remember this from Seasame Street, only it was like, stories told by a 4 year old or something. All it meant to me was that it was time to refill my juice cup so, yeah, pass.

Some day, as God is my witness, I will stamp out the disgusting and redundant construction "that being said." Of course it's been said. You've said it. The proper phrase is "that said." Please adjust accordingly. Thank you.

End grammar rant.

KARL PILKINGTON! Damn, I love some Pilkington and White Van Man. The series on XFM was better and more original, they started recycling things for the podcasts and lost a bit of edge.

I don't really get your objection. What's ungrammatical about using the word "being" in that context? I can't think of any rule of grammar being violated here. Do you think it's ungrammatical to say "that being the case" or "all things being equal"? Would you object equally to "that having been said", or is it just something about the word "being"?

"All things being equal" and "That being the case" aren't redundant. The phrase doesn't make sense without "being." "That having been said" makes me want to kill. It's an even more redundant version of "that being said." Why add all unnecessary those words? Get to the damned point.

Blergh. Don't de-base your reputation further, Gervais.

I'm not an EXTRAS apologist. Maybe 'apologist' is too strong a word, and though no one expected a repeat of his last success, but it seems as if a lot of the people who bring up its 'greatness' to me seem to need for it be something better than it was. Although, when I did see it, it was in two marathon sessions with a rabid fan, so maybe I was overwhelmed.

Sure, it had some really good guest spots (Patrick Stewart's was my fave, and I haven't met anyone who has disagreed yet), but I found it a bit too sullen and demoralizing to be something other than dull for me by the end. And this is coming from someone who was described (accurately, by someone with whom I'm very close), as a 'soft, sweet marshmallow, encasing a core of cynicism and misery'.

I would sit there thinking, I don't care about Andy, when's Ronnie Corbett coming back?

Talking with some others about it, I was the only one who felt this way, but maybe some of you experienced something similar. The two supporting characters were supposed to be lovable oddballs, or something, right? I only experienced total contempt for them. Nobody's perfect, blah, blah, blah, but how am I supposed to feel sorry for people who nearly destroyed the career of the main character? Was Andy abrasive? Yes. Should he have said or done a lot of the crap that brought on his misery? No. Should he have maintained relationships with two of the biggest fuck-ups around though? No. And lame-o rabbit-out-of-the-had redemption arc doesn't make any of those relationships any more credible. And what was the deal with his enemy? Someone should've just pushed him out of the window.

Yeah, after finding out that you had to pay to listen to the radio show (this was before I saw EXTRAS), I forgot about it, ended up hearing part of a couple of episodes, and got bored pretty quickly. Andy Partridge it was not.

Obviously, I'm a malcontent, but maybe animation is where he belongs, since his output has become so cartoonish. But then, cartoons have been getting so shitty lately, it's hardly worth the effort.

Dang. I'm not even in THAT bad of a mood.

I have several seasons of the radio show on my iPod. It does get repetitive after a while, but hot damn, as soon as I scrolled down the home page today and saw that round little head, I got excited. I'll watch it out of curiosity at the very least.

I've recently (like, over the last 3 days) been re-listening to the podcasts. I find them to be hilarious and extremely addictive. I went through the first season in a day. I just... I can't explain why I like them so much. Some people are podcast people. Others, they are not. So it goes.

That being said, I'm not 100% on an animated series. More like... 90%.
