Hammer of the Gods!

Yesterday gave us Chris Evans’ Captain America costume and there was a fairly good response to it.
Today we get Chris Hemsworth’s Thor. We’ve already seen how his face would look in it, but this is full frontal nerdity. The cape, the armor, and most importantly- Mjolnir. The Hammer.
Here’s the art-

I did some research on Wikipedia to see if there were any cool names for the hammer and I saw an interesting tidbit that said during the crafting of Mjolnir, there was some kind of mistake that caused it to actually be a little shorter than it should be. Plus, Thor’s not trying to compensate for anything.

What sayest thou, mortals? The complaint I heard against Cap was that his costume looked too modern and that could be the case here. On the other hand, who are you to question the craftsmanship of the dwarven smiths of Asgard?

Oh, I like this one. More!

Though on the second thought, that cloak will be difficult to pull off when it comes to action.

I'm not crazy about it. Looks more like an X-Men costume. But the hammer is pretty badass.

Posted by: Brie at June 3, 2010 2:20 PM

That's accurate, about the crafting.

See, in the original mythology as it stood, Loki was responsible for creating Mjolnir after he chopped off the hair of Thor's wife and the rest of the Gods decided they'd had enough of his shit. So he was scapegoated into commissioning the dwarves to make presents for many of the other Gods to make up for it.

But when the dwarves were forging the hammer, Loki was jealous that what was supposed to be the greatest of their crafts was going to Thor. So, Loki turned into some sort of fly (horsefly, I think) and started biting and annoying the main dwarf every time he was heating the hammer. It reached the point that he aggravated the dwarf so badly he pulled it out of the flames early, and it was incomplete.

The original design that was meant for the hammer was to be an actual War Hammer... The kind where the size of the grip was about waist-high, and it was meant to be wielded in two hands for slow, devastating attacks. It was considered a failure for it to be more the size of something you'd pound nails with, but he made do anyway.

They are taking a page from the current Thor line by the looks of it with a dash of Ultimates without the large glowing orbs.

I'm impressed by both and this can be modern as I believe this takes place in modern times, not the 1400's like people thought it would be a year or so ago.

Posted by: Zerath at June 3, 2010 2:21 PM

Eh. I like Captain America's better. This is just too...shiny. It may be a personal preference, but I think Thor should be a bit more rustic/dirty. He should look like he just quaffed a gallon of ale and he's ready for a bar room brawl, you know?

Posted by: mandasarah at June 3, 2010 2:29 PM

It seems consistent with A-Head somehow. Like they were designed by the same people or with a similar theme in mind.

It really feels like they're gearing up for The Avengers.

I mean, it's not as cool as Godzilla, but...

Posted by: superasente at June 3, 2010 2:30 PM

It looks like he trying to join the new fucking G.I. Joes.

Posted by: admin at June 3, 2010 2:30 PM

I'm cool with it, from the waist up. Below that, it (as Brie pointed out) looks like an X-Men movie costume. As always, though, the proof is in what it's really going to look like, in motion, on screen. wow that was a lot of commas.

Posted by: logar at June 3, 2010 2:31 PM

Anyone else think he kind of looks like Heath Ledger in that photo?

Posted by: DeistBrawler at June 3, 2010 2:38 PM

It's better than the Captain America costume, in the way a kick to the ass is less painful than a bag of bricks to the balls. It looks like a cheap Halloween costume sold through Hot Topic. That's the only way to explain the black fishnet shirt over the tank-top but under the vest.

Posted by: Robert at June 3, 2010 2:40 PM

Hmmm...fishnet....interesting..

Posted by: gee. ay. at June 3, 2010 2:44 PM

Love the aqua marine hammer lamp. I think you can find that at Ikea for $29.99 on sale with a bedside table.

Posted by: marcusarilius at June 3, 2010 2:46 PM

Oh..
Hm....no.
The hair isn't working for me. And it's offsetting the rest of the costume in a negative way.

And that hammer looks ridiculous

It looks like he trying to join the new fucking G.I. Joes.
Posted by: admin at June 3, 2010 2:30 PM

At first glance I thought you were implying that Thor wanted to fuck the Joes. Hence the black leather and large, glowing phallic symbol.

Posted by: Xtreme at June 3, 2010 3:05 PM

I've heard that in person and hopefully on film, the costume will be less shiny. I hope so, because the straight-up pleather pants are kind of wonky. I mean, you couldn't have even attempted to continue with some armor down there to kind of match the rest of the costume?

All in all I'm just grateful it cleaves more closely to the Ultimates Thor design than the original. I don't know how they would have managed to make that watchable.

Posted by: Snath at June 3, 2010 3:06 PM

I wish they had gone with the Ultimates Mjolnir as well, but I have to say they've managed to copy the original fairly well. I think it's looks great.

Posted by: Snath at June 3, 2010 3:07 PM

That's the only way to explain the black fishnet shirt over the tank-top but under the vest.

Fishnet? Isn't that chainmail?

Posted by: Vermillion at June 3, 2010 3:45 PM

That's the only way to explain the black fishnet shirt over the tank-top but under the vest.

That would be scale mail.

Posted by: mightygodking at June 3, 2010 4:05 PM

The Mjolnir is my penis.

Posted by: laredo at June 3, 2010 4:11 PM

Don't like it. He doesn't look like a god of any sort, let alone of Thunder, and that costume doesn't help.

Posted by: Chickaboom at June 3, 2010 4:24 PM

What are you people talking about? That's almost a spitting image of the current Thor!

Posted by: Zerath at June 3, 2010 4:35 PM

I think he, and all superheroes, should go shirtless. But this isn't bad I guess.

However, didn't they learn a damn thing from Edna Mode? NO CAPES!

Posted by: figgy aka Mrs Chanandler Bong at June 3, 2010 4:38 PM

I don't like it much. At first glance it looks like a business suit modified to look slightly superhero-y. It lacks the grandiosity of the comic book costume. I mean, where's his friggin' helmet? And I'm more in favor of a clean-shaven Thor. At least partly because it seems like EVERY goddamn action hero these days has never heard of a razor.

Posted by: Todd at June 3, 2010 4:40 PM

"Superhero Casual" Maybe that's his Friday costume.

Posted by: Chickaboom at June 3, 2010 4:46 PM

So, the Vikings had Pleather?

Posted by: Odnon. at June 3, 2010 4:49 PM

The costume looks cool. Problem is, because of how big Thor is drawn in the comics, his head looks freakishly large.

Posted by: The Mutt at June 3, 2010 5:28 PM

Kinda looks like they are making some interesting nods to the original costume. KInda getting that vibe from the red stripes on the boots, which look kind of make me think of the old wrapping on Thor's boots from the comics

Would like to see the helmet though.

Posted by: Ken Hart at June 3, 2010 7:19 PM

I was a big fan of The Mighty Thor comics when I was a youngin' (30 years ago), and this costume, well, just looks a little Michael Jacksoney to me.

And where's the winged helmet?

Posted by: Groundloop at June 3, 2010 8:03 PM

Chainmail? Hardly. You can see his skin too easily through it. This is chainmail (note the tight weave for protection with minimal skin visibility) and this is goth fishnet shirt (completely see-through, large thin black weave). See the difference?

Posted by: Robert at June 3, 2010 8:05 PM

Needs more codpiece.

Posted by: The Other Agent Johnson at June 3, 2010 8:25 PM
