Guys, Just Give Me a Sword: 'Outlander's' Sam Heughan Reveals His Multiple 'Game of Thrones' Auditions

I’m in the middle of my second cross-country move in less than a year, so I haven’t yet had time to catch Ron Moore’s Outlander (I hear it’s good). The series is definitely on my list, due in no small part to this dashing fellow…

…who would have made a great Renly or Loras on HBO’s Game of Thrones — no? Well, what do you know; turns out Sam Heughan (aka Outlander’s Jamie Fraser) actually tried out for both those parts, as well as five others:

“”I auditioned for Game of Thrones seven times!” the actor said. “Loads of times. I auditioned for Renly, Loras, some of the members of the Night’s Watch. And I’d always get so close! I’d be like, ‘Guys, just give me a sword!’ [Laughs.] Everyone was going in for those parts. But you know, it’s funny about those things. You’re up for so many things, and coming from those auditions, and testing on other shows, I had more experience, more experience with the process. And maybe I was more confident. And I don’t know, something about this one just felt right. This part felt different. I knew this character. I felt a connection with him.”

It looks like Heughan is doing just fine without Game of Thrones, in fact, he’s already got his own group of fans a la the Hiddlestoners and Cumberbitches — a group who call themselves the Heughligans. Kilts for all!

Heughligans is actually brilliant. Would have been even better if he played footie when he was young but and broke his leg and had to give up a career in the pros.

  • First sighting in the wild of the contraction "footie" on Pajiba?

    I'm calling it.

And expecting the Seppos will have no clue what it means.

  • emmalita

I know footie means football, and you are talking about what we muricans call soccer. But I have no idea what a Seppo might be. A lesbian separatist?

  • "footie", or more correctly, "footy" is any football code for Australians, though more likely to be Australian Rules Football, or rugby league. In casual use, one "plays a game of footy", or goes "to the footy", or even "kicks around the footy".

A Seppo is Australian rhyming slang. An American is a Yank, Yank rhymes with "tank", which is short for septic tank. You shorten "septic" to "Seppo". It's not very kind, but it's done with love.

  • denesteak

jesus. The laziness that Australians employ with their vocabulary always amazes me (shortening the words, like the aforementioned fotty, or brekkie or any name ever). And then they go create a term for Americans that follows a weirdly convoluted path...

  • Irina

Sorry for mispelling it, I don't think I've even seen the word written down, only heard it in movies (I'm Romanian). I just liked it better with an "ie".

  • emmalita

Excellent! I have learned new things today. I think I can forgive Australians for Seppo, after all we probably assault you with half remembered shit from Crocodile Dundee and ask you to say "shrimp on the barbie."

  • BlackRabbit

    It means Americans, I believe.

  • DarthBrookes

Well, now I'm REALLY glad he got the part in Outlander. Good for him. It's really soul crushing not getting those parts. I know. I tried out for Big Brother, like, five times!

  • If there is one thing I like less then the word 'fandom', it's when groups of fans give themselves cutesy nicknames.

  • Sara_Tonin00

See, and here I was wondering what my group of superfans would be called.

  • emmalita

    The SSRIs?

  • Sara_Tonin00

I mean, I was wondering based on my REAL name, but I like these suggestions.

  • Tryptophanatics?

  • Laura Carmichael

So thankful he was free and available for Outlander - where he won't be killed off for at least 8 seasons! (His is main character in the 8 novels published to date) He is amazing as Jamie Fraser in Outlander!

  • Maddy

OMG he would have been such a good Loras! But given how much the show has dropped the ball on that character he's probably better off to be honest

  • He even has some interesting face things going on similar to Natalie Dormer. But yes, he's much better off as the lead of Outlander.

  • Oh, now that you mention it, I do see a bit of a similarity in face shape...

I mean, do agree he's better off, but I see it and now cannot un-see it.
