Guess Who Has Two Thumbs, Beats His Wife, and Makes More than Any Other Television Star?

Yahoo! TV has put out a list of the top earning actors in television, and one has to imagine that there’s a lot of folks missing from the list, otherwise we’d have to assume that Julie Bowen makes less than the kid, Rico Rodriguez, in “Moder Family,” and that Lauren Graham is the only actor in “Parenthood” that ranks (unimaginable given that Craig T. Nelson, Peter Krause, Dax Shepard, and Monica Potter are also in that cast). It’s an interesting list, all the same, if only to note that (fucking) Charlie Sheen makes more than twice what Jon Cryer does, and three times more than any other actor in prime-time television. That’s the benefit of syndication, I suppose, and there aren’t a lot of shows that make it into syndication anymore (which is why “Friends” and “Seinfeld” reruns still dominate that market).

It’s also fascinating to see the folks who are criminally underpaid, at least in relation to the higher earners, like David Caruso (who earns $375,000 an episode for flipping off his sunglasses). Compare that to Jon Hamm, who only makes $100K an ep, or Zachary Levi, who makes $60,000 an episode, or $1,000 for every high kick. I wouldn’t have thought that “Burn Notice’s” Jeffrey Donovan earns twice more than Nathan Fillion, or that Tina Fey made more than Steve Carell (and no wonder Carell wants to leave the office — he earns for a full year on that show less than what he can make with one movie).

Oh, and the kid in “Two and a Half Men,” makes twice more than what Timothy Olyphant makes for “Justified.” That smarts. But there is some justice in knowing that Jane Lynch earns more than Matthew Morrison on “Glee.”

Here’s the list provided by Yahoo! TV:

I only watch one of those dramas (Mad Men). Wow. That's a lot of TV I have zero interest in watching.

Posted by: Wednesday at August 12, 2010 9:36 AM

I knew about the crapload Sheen was making when someone pointed out the gap between what the top earning men received compared to the top earning women. Though it was back when he was only getting $1 million per episode.

Posted by: Uda at August 12, 2010 9:38 AM

So Piven makes more money than the "star" of Entourage? That much asshole don't come cheap.

How much more do we figure these people are making who are listed as producers and from potential syndication?

I wonder how much Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are making?

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at August 12, 2010 9:39 AM

Also, imagine how much money the networks are making if that's what the actors are getting.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at August 12, 2010 9:40 AM

I couldn't even finish this. It makes me sick.

You know what base scale pay is for an Equity stage actor? About $500. A week. For 8 shows a week. Live. Oh, and if they're at a really nice theater they'll get a few bucks per diem to eat.

Posted by: Ian at August 12, 2010 9:41 AM

That means that if a season has 13 episodes, Kate Gosselin makes about 3.25 mil a year. Does this sicken anyone else?
Sookie makes per episode what I make in a year. She eats pickles, drinks, pukes, and gets arrested. Also tans. It sickens me that people get paid to be on "reality" tv at all - considering they are simply supposed to be living their lives (snicker) and not acting or even having to learn any lines.

Posted by: ninetwenteetoo at August 12, 2010 9:44 AM

Jim Parsons only makes 40k an episode? Yeah, I see a BIG pay day coming for him.

Posted by: Darcy at August 12, 2010 9:45 AM

I still don't get the appeal of Two and a Half Men. My father, who loves Mad Men and Justified seems to think it's one of the funniest shows on TV. I know he's wrong, but I really don't want to hate my dad. But even with the shows insane popularity, I find it crazy to believe that it's worth what they're paying those actors. And that Charlie Sheen, in the midst of his whole spousal abuse/rehab bull shit, had the balls to renegotiate to get more money! Dick.

I'm a little surprised Zachary Levi gets paid that much. I kind of liked the idea that I had built up in my head that most of them weren't making that much. *sigh* Oh well, I guess I can still lust after Zachary knowing that he's rich. And Chuck's a drama? Since when?

Posted by: Kayanne at August 12, 2010 9:46 AM

Hugh Laurie (House) $400,000+

Man deserves a raise.

Posted by: , at August 12, 2010 9:49 AM

Mrs. Julien,
I know that when William Petersen was still on CSI, he made $1 million per episode for his acting and producing combined, which matched what Sheen got for appearing on his show. And they were the top two earners at the time.

Posted by: Uda at August 12, 2010 9:56 AM

CHRIS O'DONNELL IS STILL ALIVE?

What?

I seriously thought he had died years ago.

This list makes me feel sick. And that it should be a crime that Christiane Amanpour makes less than Matt effing Lauer. Bah.

Posted by: the other nicole at August 12, 2010 10:01 AM

No Bryan Cranston?

Posted by: Mattfactor at August 12, 2010 10:04 AM

Question, what is the approximate number of hours that an actor has to work to make an episode. This is going to have a very significant impact on the the level of rage in my tiny, liquid nitrogen filled heart.

Posted by: admin at August 12, 2010 10:09 AM

I want to chop Charlie Sheen's dick off and make him eat it out of a leper's infected wound, then make him assfuck Roman Polanski until they're both dead.

Posted by: Kballs at August 12, 2010 10:09 AM

Jeffrey Donovan > Charlie Sheen

Posted by: LG at August 12, 2010 10:10 AM

That's a nice Bad Machinery reference, Dustin. Well done.

Well, either that or it's a blatant steal in which case, shame on you.

Judge Judy makes $45 million a year; Holy Fuck-Me-Sideways-Thursday!

Posted by: Urththing at August 12, 2010 10:10 AM

The only things I needed to know from this list were:

Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men) $1.25 million
Chris O’Donnell (NCIS: Los Angeles) $125,000
Jon Hamm (Mad Men) $100,000
Jane Lynch (Glee) $50,000

I don't know which is worse - that Charlie Sheen gets paid 25 times as much as Jane Lynch, or that Chris (apparently not dead) O'Donnell makes more money from some show nobody ever talks about than John Freaking HAMM makes for his work on Mad Men, which EVERYBODY talks about all the time.

And you better be right about a lot of omissions, because Jon Hamm is the only member of the Mad Men cast on this list, and that fills me with rage, when I see that everybody on all the identical CSI shows ranks above the $100K mark.

Posted by: Edith at August 12, 2010 10:18 AM

Chris O'Donnell RIP? He's as bland as Pacey and just as white, I'll say that much for the comparison.

Standouts to me:

Jada Pinkett Smith (HawthoRNe) $150,000--Why? Does anyone watch this? Awesome capiliZAtion oN THe tITle does not a show make.

Anna Paquin (True Blood) $75,000--Hell of a salary for a porn star. Does anyone else think we'd still have Rome and Deadwood if they re-titled them; "Anna Paquin Sleeps With Everyone In A Historical Context"?

Kate Gosselin (Kate Plus 8) $250,000 per episode--The only reason I'm okay with Katethulu making this much money is that some lucky therapist is going to have carte blanche when these kids get older.

Ed O’Neill (Modern Family) $100,000--scoring four touchdowns in a single game while playing for the Polk High School Panthers in the 1966 city championship game is a worthy accomplishment. But getting paid for looking at Sofia Vergara is a karmic rebound that even Buddha looks down on, and grumbles "..lucky bastard".

Brian Williams (NBC) $12.5 million--Because he's so dreamy...Mancrush! (I think this one should be allowed)

Posted by: D-Day at August 12, 2010 10:19 AM

Glenn Beck is missing from the Actor category.

Posted by: Scully at August 12, 2010 10:27 AM

Damn, Miranda Cosgrove is kicking Selena Gomez's ASS.

In related news, what in God's name is happening to me?

Posted by: Todd at August 12, 2010 10:33 AM

Thanks Uda! I had a feeling it was obscene.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at August 12, 2010 10:40 AM

admin, for any given actor on any given show, their time on-set could be anywhere from 3 hours (1 being for make-up and the like) to 15 hours. Or more. Depends on what's being shot that day and how much of what's being shot they're in. There's certainly a lot of downtime while crews are setting up lights and mics and the director talks to the camera ops and blah blah blah. But, they're still on-set and ostensibly working. I don't spend every minute of every day at my job "working" (obviously, I'm posting here), either.

One also has to consider that actors are considered a premium commodity -- at least, the right actor is, so it makes sense the successful ones would earn more, even for doing "less" work (re: stage actor's equity). They also bring in more money, presumably because no other actor in their role could do it. Theoretically speaking. Stage actors don't bring in the revenue, man, unless they're on Broadway. Even then, it's not nearly as much as a popular TV show.

All that said, yeah, they're all still overpaid.

Posted by: RobP at August 12, 2010 10:41 AM

@admin - From my meager understandings of how TV production works, sitcoms are basically a 9 to 5 job. Dramas have longer days.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at August 12, 2010 10:44 AM

Awwwwwwwww, those poor babies... This is terrible! No wonder they need so much ego and dick stroking. These people are practically starving!

Posted by: Sofía at August 12, 2010 10:45 AM

Can anyone clarify for me why they posted David Boreanaz per ep salary, but Emily Deschanel is nowhere on the list? I ask because Christopher Meloni & Mariska Hargitay are listed. And even though David Boreanaz has a lot more credits to his name, Emily seems like she has the more difficult job (as far as her dialogue goes). I'm wondering if her salary is so small, she doesn't even make the list. Which would be sad.

Posted by: Scully at August 12, 2010 10:50 AM

Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi (Jersey Shore) $30,000 per episode

Matthew Morrison (Glee) $30,000

One of these two people can sing, dance (A wicked Vanilla Ice impression), and act at least a little bit. The other is an orange blight upon humanity.

But they both spend the same amount on product.

Posted by: Mrcreosote at August 12, 2010 11:00 AM

How pleased am I that Hugh Laurie gets the most per episode? Super. Because he's awesome AND he's got that Scottish Presbyterian thing going for him where he doesn't really believe he deserves it and like it'll all end at any minute.

Now, where's Craig Ferguson on the list? I want to know how much he earns! I know it's gotta be less than the others, but come on. He can't be doing so poorly that he doesn't even make the list!

Posted by: Sefa at August 12, 2010 11:02 AM

Wait, so you're telling me Charlie Sheen earns THREE TIMES what Hugh Laurie does? For TWO AND A HALF MEN?? You have GOT to be shitting me!

Posted by: Danny from Puerto Rico at August 12, 2010 11:08 AM

I don't know which is worse - that Charlie Sheen gets paid 25 times as much as Jane Lynch

That really made me feel sick to my stomach. Fucking hell.

@Danny from Puerto Ric

Es verdad!

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at August 12, 2010 11:12 AM

I'm pretty shocked that Jim Parsons still makes less than Galecki and Cuoco. Sure it was originally supposed to be their show, but after he stole it and made it decent, I figured they'd throw the guy a couple extra bucks.

Posted by: Courtney at August 12, 2010 11:13 AM

Oh, and as an extra bit of murder fuel, let's all remember that Charlie Sheen got upped to $1.25 million AFTER the wife-knife incident. After. Like it's a reward.

Posted by: Courtney at August 12, 2010 11:14 AM

I know that mine is probably going to be an unpopular opinion, but I don't see anything surprising or necessarily wrong about these figures. They strike me as pretty much in line (with some exceptions) with how much money the shows these actors are in haul in for the studios. Yay capitalism!

Sheen is an unmitigated douche-gargler, but his show is cheap to make, and is highly rated. Jon Hamm is awesome, Mad Men is awesome, but they just can't compete in ratings with most of the dreck on network TV in terms of viewership and advertising dollars. Dreck=profit=paydays.

In a perfect world, actors would get paid according to the quality of their work, in which case this list would look much different. But hey, in a perfect world I would be a sun-god atop a golden pyramid, with a thousand naked women screaming throwing little pickles.

Posted by: logar at August 12, 2010 11:27 AM

Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi (Jersey Shore) $30,000 per episode

Yeah. Ok. It's been real but it's time to go. Don't cry though, Earth, you had a nice run. But all good things must end.

Posted by: TylerDFC at August 12, 2010 11:36 AM

Damn there is a lot of hate for Charlie Sheen and all kinds of crap about who does a better job on what shows, what does that have to do with anything. The show is popular, would be fucking stupid of Sheen not to negotiate his contact to get paid as much as possible.

Posted by: Silchas Ruin at August 12, 2010 11:40 AM

If Anna Paquin is making $75K per ep, I hope Skarsgard and guy who plays Lafayette are making at least double that because as far as I can figure out, they are the only reason the majority of people are still watching.

Posted by: PaddyDog at August 12, 2010 11:47 AM

Wow. I'm in the wrong business. Shoulda opted for acting.

Posted by: denesteak at August 12, 2010 11:49 AM

Yes, Charlie Sheen sucks. Yes, David Spade is making more than Fillion.

However, we've all apparently become desensitized to the fact that Oprah makes more than everyone else on this list MOTHERFUCKING COMBINED.

Posted by: Antony at August 12, 2010 1:12 PM

Anyone feel like getting a bit more homicidal? Remember that "per episode" means per episode, not per hour. So while someone on a drama like Jon Hamm is getting paid $100,00 for one hour's worth of TV, Charlie Sheen is actually getting paid $2.5 million per hour of TV [Two and a Half Men episodes are only a half hour each].

Posted by: TC at August 12, 2010 1:13 PM

You know, as fucked up and materialistic as it is, I'm kind of happy with all of the other injustices listed here that Hugh Laurie pulls in more than just about anybody in the dramatic acting sense (ignoring as somebody pointed out that Oprah makes more money than God).

Writing varies, but you can tell Laurie really puts a ton of effort into his acting.

The number of males with much smaller parts on their shows making significantly more than the female main characters from the shows they are on makes me a bit sick to my stomach.

Makes me wonder how much Emily Deschanel and Ellen Pompeo, who aren't even on the lists, make. (Not that David Boreanaz or Patrick Dempsey are SMALL parts, but in both cases said females are the title characters.)

Posted by: DominaNefret at August 13, 2010 9:52 PM

Tina Fey (30 Rock) $350,000

Is this just her salary on the acting side of things, considering she has a dozen jobs on that show?

David Spade (Rules of Engagement) $150,000
Patrick Warburton (Rules of Engagement) $85,000

David Spade earns nearly twice as much as Warburtn, that's meesed up. Warburton is the only watchable thing about RoE. This is proof, if proof were needed, that there is no God.

Posted by: csb at August 15, 2010 12:18 PM

Anna Paquin is overpaid for a porn star. Most porn stars cannot act nor are they known for their intelligence. It would be interesting to see if she could make it in a show which required acting and not stripping and performing sex acts

Posted by: susan at December 18, 2010 3:04 PM

Rather than labelling Anna Paquin a porn star, she should be commended for going out of her comfort zone as an actor.
$75,000 an episode is not overpaid considering that she is an oscar winner.
