Guess He's Not the Last!

This news makes me feel all funny inside. The cartoon version of The Last Airbender is pretty much universally loved by those who’ve seen it. It’s a nice three season arc and it wraps up all the loose ends and it all ends happily.

But now this story comes across my desk. (In the interest of full disclosure, there’s no desk.)

They want to continue the story. It will be set 70 years later and will feature the new Avatar, a girl named Korra. She has mastered every element, except for air, and I assume the lack of airbenders to teach her will be an issue. Maybe this could work? I once nerdily dreamed up a similar way to continue the series.

They also mention that it will be a slightly more modern world with a Steampunk styled metropolis called Republic City. Maybe this is a good thing, there were hints of steampunk in the original and they were generally well-liked.

Here’s my two cents: The world of Avatar is a very rich and fleshed-out one. It’s similar to the Star Wars Universe in the way that it gives you little pieces and it makes you want to be a part of it. I would bet that there’s a lot of Airbender fan fiction. (Katara + Zuko 4 Evar.)

There is a potential downside to the story; it doesn’t say anything about the original series creators. If they were behind it, I’d have confidence and would certainly watch it. As it is… I worry.

Ok, here’s what they should really do. Keep the idea of people fighting with the elements. But this time make it a little more…let’s say Roman. Still kind of a historical vibe going on. Some intrigue and politics in there aaand I just described Jim Butcher’s Codex Alera . What I’m saying is, make that into a cartoon.

I know the animated Airbender gets some love around here. What do you guys think of this news?

If the creators behind the original series continue the story (Every. Creator/writer.) this will be my most anticipated thing since Turtles 2: Secret of the Ooze.

Contemplating leaving work early just to celebrate this news. I'm that fucking excited already.

The reports I'm seeing specifically mention that the two original creators are behind it, so I'm thrilled.

As an avid fan of the series im rather worried. i would just leave it as it is. plus with even more steampunk stuff added into an asian culture i dunno about this one. im excited though

the original kind of ended on a small cliffhanger if folk remember

Zuko asked another charcter a question, a question I for one very much wanted to see answered

it'd be just sweet if that was part of the genesis of this tale

weaving the fallout of the past into the present was something the first arc did very well

Posted by: PyD at July 21, 2010 6:34 PM

Listen, if it sucks I'll stop watching. But until then, HOLYFUCKINGSHIT YEAH!

Posted by: jM at July 21, 2010 6:34 PM

I'm okay with it, especially since it will be a completely new cast. If it sucks, I can pretend that everything ended with Aang's victory over the Fire Nation, and if it's awesome, I can watch it every week in good ol' geeky fashion.

I'm not totally familiar with the steampunk trend, but didn't we see some of those visuals in the Earth kingdom? It would make sense to see steampunk stuff in this new series because the Earth kingdom was the biggest and most powerful behind the Fire Nation, just without the crazy imperialist thirst for dominance. I can see how Earth Kingdom fashion would be #1.

THIS!

Also, there was another compelling character that was left in chains for whom I would very much like to see a resolution to. Or at least, an explanation.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at July 21, 2010 6:41 PM

I bet we get to see a Crazy Old Man Sokka. Aang will have to be dead for there to be a new Avatar but that doesn't mean there won't be others still around.
I'll miss Appa and Momo most of all.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at July 21, 2010 6:43 PM

Aang will appear in the Avatar State. HE MUST. Or I'm not playing. (Oh who am I kidding, I'm totally playing. But Mentor Aang! I want to see Mentor Aang!)

Seeing BSlim react that way is worth the price of admission (in the interest of full disclosure, the internet is free).

The first series (interesting that I'm already calling it "the first series") was great. It had so many subtle elements that made the world live and breath. One thing that constantly surprised me, for example, was that each form of "bending" carried with it a very specific look. It's not just the opening sequence that shows you how stylized each martial art is. Throughout the show, their movements are very reflective of the element their manipulating (water benders are fluid, earth benders are rigid, etc...). This wasn't something the characters ever thought to talk about (no-one ever said, "Wow, her water bending is so fluid, and my air bending is so gentle -- WHAT A WORLD!"), but it's still an element of the show that was given great attention.

This gives me great joy.

I believe the first definitive use of Steampunk-like tech was during the Northern Air Temple episode where they encounter the Mechanist character who's being forced to make tech for the Fire Nation (I'm pretty sure he was Earth Kingdom). He was the one that created the Fire Airships. Those and the rest of his inventions that were shown looked pretty steampunkish to me.

I don't really remember the question at the end... Could you help a brother out?

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at July 21, 2010 6:52 PM

Eh.

Posted by: LordNinja at July 21, 2010 6:56 PM

Of course our reality will come crashing down once they announce they will let Shamalambadouchebag have another crack at it.

SPOILER ALERT! it would all have been a dream, dreamed by Aang as he's lying on his deathbed.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at July 21, 2010 7:02 PM

No. Not worried at all. After the disaster that was the movie, they'll have learned, right? They'll want to make up for the disappointment that we all experienced and give us something awesome. Please?

!!!

Posted by: eskiimomo at July 21, 2010 7:08 PM

Everything I've read says the original creators are involved. This has a bit more information, plus a photo. More information should be rolling out over the next few days from the Comic-Con in San Diego. Also, holy shit I'm excited.

Posted by: JR at July 21, 2010 8:13 PM

Optimus Rhyme the question was Zuko asking his father where his mother was. That was the only problem I had with the original series, if they knew they were ending why would they bring up that plot point in the last moments

Posted by: digitalboy at July 21, 2010 8:20 PM

Oh! God! Yes!

Posted by: Sage at July 21, 2010 8:22 PM

Dear Santa,

I've been a really good girl this year. I've been more or less patient and I haven't picked on my brothers too much. Furthermore I arrive to work on time every day.
I'm keeping things simple for you. All I want for Christmas is a warhorse, a katana and a fully fleshed out version of the new Airbender series from the minds of the same creators of the original.
Let it be as superb as the original series. (And if the villain of the piece IS perfect for the heroine, let them get together. Don't force a love match where there doesn't have to be one, I'm still miffed that Katara didn't get together with Zuko.)

Yours Sincerely,
Four Eyes.

Aang only lives til 67? (If I did the math right). That's a little sad, I thought as the Avatar he'd last longer than that.

Posted by: Sage at July 21, 2010 9:45 PM

I would have thought that Aang would be spending the rest of his life refounding the Air Nomads, as it would have been the most important task for restoring the balance once the Fire Nation was defeated. Maybe something will have prevented him from doing so that will tie in with his apparent early death?

AAAAAAAAAAH! Why didn't I read this earlier! wheeeeee!!!

Posted by: figgy at July 22, 2010 12:35 AM

Sooo excited! I really hope this happens!

Posted by: Heather at July 22, 2010 1:13 AM

I second a Codex Alera series.

Posted by: streakermaximus at July 22, 2010 1:29 AM

BSlim,

Even though they didn't mention it in the show, the creators actually answered some time after that she was put in an insane asylum.

Posted by: Alex at July 22, 2010 2:44 AM

Thanks Alex!

It would have been the logical place for her after her breakdown. Such a powerful and fascinating character. If you think about the story you wonder what the Phoenix King (had he been successful)would have done with her as her insanity and ambition became a direct threat to him. I still would like to see an OVA with the original characters having a final showdown with her where we see her insanity explored and she either destroyed or redeemed.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at July 22, 2010 5:51 AM

I would bet that there’s a lot of Airbender fan fiction.

You have noooooo idea.

I read the link JR put up. This is what got my attention:

Under the tutelage of Aang's son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large. (emphasis mine)

So that answers the "more airbenders" question. Looks like Aang is repopulating the Nomads the fun way.

Although, if they are going to go for the token romance between the two, wouldn't it be kinda creepy for the son of the previous Avatar to date the new one? You know considering what we know about how the Avatar thing works?

Of course, it is entirely possible that this Tenzin is more of an older, Uncle Iroh type, which would simply KICK MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF ASS.

And yet, it still wouldn't stop the 'shippers.

Posted by: Vermillion at July 22, 2010 7:36 AM

@BarbadoSlim - 'Shamalambadouchebag' HAHAH!

Would love to see this, although other than the "WHERE IS MY MOTHER" question, the original was just so conclusive. What other great turmoil could the avatar world face?

If they do do this, I kind of hope they up the graphics to be honest. The original had looked great in its own right with its Miyazaki inspired simplicity and all, but the base designs of the characters were just kind of fugly.

It's just a nitpick, but it'd be nice if they could just shake off the Nickolodean cartoon style a bit.

Posted by: Lydia at July 22, 2010 7:40 AM

Also, this would be the first thing on TV I'd give a s--- about since LOST ended.

Posted by: Lydia at July 22, 2010 7:58 AM

It is sad to think about Aang dying...

But Aang's son as an uncle Iroh, count me way the fuck in on this one.

Also, seconded on the crazy old man Sokka.
