Oh No, There Goes Tokyo

I snapped this one up before Dustin could defile it with his ignorance and disrespect.

Because you must respect Godzilla, (Gojira to the purists among us). The classic Toho films should be a staple, a prerequisite, for all lovers of giant monsters. And frankly, anyone who doesn’t love Godzilla is no friend of mine.

Now, of course, I’m not speaking of the retarderiffic Roland Emmerich film of 1998. While it had decent effects, it was one of the most agonizingly painful scripts ever written. Matthew Broderick and Maria Pitillo have no fucking place in a Godzilla movie. Though Jean Reno is welcome in anything.

In any event, Legendary Pictures is gearing up for a new big screen version of our favorite daikaijū. The atomic-breathed monster will be CGI, which makes me a wee bit twitchy, but for the moment, producer Brian Rodgers is saying the right things to try to put the anxious army of geeks at ease. At a recent 3D summit (oh yeah — it’s going to be in 3D. Hmph), Rodgers dropped a few tidbits that the kind blokes at Bleeding Cool were nice enough to pass along. The highlights are the fact that it’s slated for 2012, and it’s going to pay homage to the originals, which is excellent news. He’s also vowed to “not make the same decisions” as Emmerich did in that last clusterfuck (meaning no stupid iguana evolutionary roots, and no egg-laying).

Perhaps most intriguing is that Rodgers stated that there will be another monster or monsters. This is the greatest news of all, methinks. Godzilla needs an ass to kick besides the army, so this is an outstanding decision. The inevitable question, of course, is which one? We’ve got legions of other monsters to choose from. Mothra? MechaGodzilla? Baragon? Rodan? Anguirus? KING FUCKING GHIDORAH?

King Ghidorah.jpg
Dude’s a planet killer. Recognize.

Anyway, perhaps the most ambitious (and potentially idiotic) statement from Rodgers is that he wants this to be the Batman Begins of Godzilla movies — or rather,m they want to draw some inspiration from Batman Begins. That would be a very neat trick indeed. Frankly, I’d settle for the Batman Returns of Godzilla movies.

Anyway, here’s the full video with Rodgers:

The only way 3D will work with this is if they go the way of Piranha 3D and go for the camp full out. THAT would be awesome.

The "Batman Begins" of Godzilla movies? Does that mean we get ninja Godzilla? Hey if a 50 story tall lizard with atomic breath can skulk in the shadows, we're done for.

About 6 months ago, the 1998 version was on, and I put it on for a bit just to see some stuff crash and explode.

But I couldn't watch it. Not because it was terrible, but surprisingly because it gave me 9/11 flashbacks.

I found an awesome double-DVD set that has both the original and the Raymond Burr-ized versions. I'm pretty sure that means you HAVE to like me.

As long as he doesn't have that stupid underbite.

Posted by: Odnon. at September 22, 2010 9:48 AM

Oh, Beav...I went through hell getting that set. This poor girl at Fry's didn't know about it, and was gamely trying to help me, and I felt like a putzy snob when I kept saying "Gojira"--not to be persnickety, but because that's what it says on the box and we were wading through all the other dvd's. "This one?" "Uh, no...it says 'Gojira'". I believe I finally found it at Best Buy.

But you know who else I wanna see in this movie?

A dark and gritty Godzilla movie set in a more realistic environment? Never going to happen.

A critically acclaimed Godzilla movie with a cast of talented actors used to great effect? A tough sell.

A CGI-shitfest with everything flying out of the screen at the audience because that's what the fans want? I think we have a winner.

Posted by: Robert at September 22, 2010 9:58 AM

I absolutely agree with Robert. It'll be the G-Force of monster movies.

Posted by: admin at September 22, 2010 10:20 AM

I think I just figured out Hollywood's game. Sure, they could make a mind-blowing movie-to-end-all-movies version of Godzilla, but why? Make another shitty one, and in 12 years another director and producer will line up to "fix" the issues of this one, fanbois will froth, rinse, repeat.

A great one that doesn't need to be remade would just take money out of their pockets.

I love Godzilla.

My family moved into a new house when I was 5 years old. My sister, who was 8 at the time, thought the two of us should go down our street and introduce ourselves to our new neighbors.

We got about 2 houses down before my sister ran home crying because I kept introducing myself as "Godzilla [Last Name]."

Posted by: Forbiddendonut at September 22, 2010 11:09 AM

Jay, I think it was one I just randomly came across, and I was all "Oh, I don't have Godzilla in my collection yet" and then I realized it was Gojira AND Godzilla and my eyes got all big and cartoony and I was all "OMG MUST PURCHASE RIGHT NOW." I couldn't even tell you where I was at the time. Possibly Borders, which means it was like 3x as expensive as anywhere else, and I didn't even care.

Oh please, let him go with the Tyrannosaurus Reznor angle!

Any Godzilla origin story without Usagi Yojimbo will be a failure.

This comment will not make sense to any of you.

asfjdkl;superasente, the Godzilla origin story was one of my favorite Usagi one-shots ever!! Though the first Ninja Turtle crossover was pretty excellent, too--but I diverge. And wow did I just get nostalgic flashbacks... Oh man...

Seriously, when is it going to be Godzuki's time to shine?

Posted by: figgy at September 22, 2010 9:36 PM

Seriously, a 3D version of Godzilla would be totally awesome. Would probably give me nightmares as I think of radioactive particles slowly decaying my brain. Mothra in a fight with Godzilla in 3D would be the ultimate.
