Goddamnit Hollywood, Find Something Better for Gina Carano Than This

By Dustin Rowles | Trade News | February 21, 2014 | Comments ()

Look, I’m not saying that Gina Carano is a brilliant actress, although she more than held her own in Haywire and was effective in Fast & Furious 6. But she has a commanding presence. She’s captivating, and draws the audience’s eye better than nearly any of Hollywood’s A-list actresses. She’s also hot, and brutal, and completely, incredibly badass, and I want her and Katee Sackhoff to do a Bad Boys-like buddy cop comedy together, and I want it to make a billion dollars. If there were some romantic tension between the two, well, I wouldn’t complain about that, either.

What we do not need to see is Carano doing some crappy, gender-reversed Statham B-movie with Cam Gigandet directed by the guy behind Into the Blue and Blue Crush. It’s beneath Carano. It’s beneath us.

And yet, here we are with the In the Blood trailer, and of course, it lands on VOD and theaters at the same time (April 4th). Will I watch it? Probably. But I’ll just end up shaking my head for half an hour wondering why Carano hasn’t landed her own Marvel franchise yet.

It's simple, and say what you will bout ScarJo but Gina Carano cannot act.

    Commanding presense? Puh-lease.

I sincerely believe she's overrated at this point. I gave her a pass in Haywire for being new and all but FF6? Wow. She just looks uncomfortable on screen to me.

She shouldn't even be in the same sentence as The Statham now. Cmon.

Katee Sackhoff though. Gina, go and watch the new Riddick. Learn a thing or two from Katee.

  • Andy Brent

She popped up recently on Almost Human (whyTF is no one talking about that show!) as a murderous android, and she sold it!

  • googergieger

Yeah, I agree. Who da eff needs points?

  • Uriah_Creep

But I’ll just end up shaking my head for half an hour wondering why Carano hasn’t landed her own Marvel franchise yet

Really? She may have been "adequate" in Haywire, but she's no Chris Evans, much less a Robert Downey Jr. Give her a few decent comic-dramatic action roles first, and then we'll talk.

  • Cowtools

Frankly, I like the fact that this seems like one big cliche swarm. It's basically a gender swapped version of every Ford/Neeson style "Give me back my wife!" potboiler. And I think that's making great strides for gender equality.

  • BlackRabbit

As long as she's married to Katee Sackhoff.

  • pastor_of_muppets

Gina Carano needs to be a serious film adaptation of Witchblade. Bad ass homicide detective who comes into possession of a supernatural, sentient gauntlet she uses to battle demons. Yes Please. If they can make it R Rated they can have all the money.

  • I don't know that she needs anything better just yet. What she needs is to make bank, so they keep giving her work, just like any other actor.

That said, I pointed out the poster to the mister. "Date night?" he prompted. Yes, yes indeed. I'll watch Statham, Vin Diesel, etc. in a stupid action flick, because I like stylized violence. That movie + Carano? I'm in. So that's a tiny bit of bank.

  • L.O.V.E.

    Total VODIMB release.

  • zeke_the_pig

    Haywire HBO series or GTFO

Since the Bourne franchise was pretty much ruined by Renner / Legacy maybe it's time for a reboot?

I could totally see a female Bourne with Carano in the role. Pick a director who can make a great action film like Gareth Evans and you've got my money.

  • Jiffylush

I wouldn't say that it was ruined by Renner in Legacy. But I think Carrano would be awesome in that role.

  • Guest

Fair point, he can't be blamed entirely (Spoilers: The Flowers for Algernon story), but he brought nothing new to it.

  • Mrcreosote

Like I need another reason not to zipline. This is "excursions gone wrong-the movie". I'm betting Danny Trejo is a bad guy in this one.

  • Carano is clearly growing as an actress. Look at her in a lead role, and making more than one facial expression! And then there's all the glistening and the muscles and the convincingly hurting people. She's making a name for herself in the boy's club of all boy's clubs - action movies. That's amazing. Why are we scoffing at that?

I'm going to watch the ever-loving SHIT out of this movie.

  • Krissy

    Yeah I will too.

  • Armond White is my master now

When I think what a wonderful Wonder Woman could have been Gina Carano... Instead, we have a stick insect for the role. Sad, very sad.

  • Al Borland's Beard

Didn't she have like three lines in Fast 6?

  • /spoilers

But she SMIRKED like a champ!

  • And here I thought I was the only one who enjoyed topless kickboxing?

  • wonkeythemonkey

Good lord, the header photo has so much airbrushing, it looks like a digital painting in a muscle-worship DeviantArt gallery!

  • You say that like it's a bad thing.

  • Samantha Klein

I would watch that movie. The Sackhoff/Carano one. Although I disagree that she "held her own" in Haywire (which I did enjoy): she kind of sucked all the air out of the room.

  • Jiffylush

Maybe she will get to use her own voice in this one.

  • Mrs. Julien

She goes home to HENRY CAVILL every night. God has already given to her with both hands and to ask for more would be greedy and while she may not have the career you feel she deserves, despite her hard work and in spite of her, let’s be honest, not so great acting (something she has in common with her partner, HENRY CAVILL), she has built a career on her ability to kick @ss which is totally awesome and, lest we forget, she goes home to HENRY CAVILL every night!

  • Mary229

Cavill is way more talented than she is so I disagree there. He doesn't always get the best scripts but he ::can:: act and does have range. He was quite good on the final seasons of The Tudors and was a very good Superman in a movie with an awful script. With a better script he would probably be wonderful. He's way, way more talented than she is.

  • Of ALL the celebrity sex tapes that keep getting foisted upon us, somehow the hackers/sleazebags of the world can't find THESE TWO wrecking the shit out of a Holiday Inn queen-size, even in shitty night vision?

  • SITUATION: You're the guy who's filming the former UFC Woman's Champion and Superman as they bang in the way that only two perfect specimens can bang. A vigorous plowing that reads on the Richter Scale, bends light, and has the ability to cut through the Space-Time Continuum.

All of a sudden you see one of them go in the bathroom, out of frame. Then you feel a tap on your shoulder. When the continuum portal opened one of them stepped through to your room, one minute before your present and snuck up behind you, and they plan on kicking the ever-loving shit out of you......

Which one would you rather try to fight? I go with Superman. He may beat me so bad that it ceases to arouse me, and the images of old Uncle "Our Little Secret" Jasper disappear for a moment; but Carano might end up snapping some of my cigarette weakened bones - in turn giving me a boner - then snapping that as well.

  • It's the last sentence that makes this.

  • Hmm excellent conundrum. One for the ages really.

  • Mrs. Julien

Still working on the Daniel Craig/Rachel Weisz tape. You can understand their distraction.

  • BendinIntheWind

I want to go to there.

(more like they are holdin' out on the good stuff)

  • Mrs. Julien

C'mon that has got to get first priority, right?

  • I'm just saying they seem reeeeeeeaaal slow on both.

  • Anthony Hoffman

I think Dustin has a crush.

  • Mrs. Julien

    I have a envy.

  • Green Lantern

    Mrs. J,

Pretty sure she and Cavill broke up some time ago. His loss, frankly.

  • Mrs. Julien

They are back together as far as I know, but if they aren't:

For a while there, she got to go home to HENRY CAVILL every night. God has already given to her with both hands and to ask for more would be greedy and while she may not have the career you feel she deserves, despite her hard work and in spite of her, let’s be honest, not so great acting (something she has in common with her former partner, HENRY CAVILL ), she has built a career on her ability to convincingly kick @ass which is totally awesome and, lest we forget, she got to go home to HENRY CAVILL every night for a while there!

P.S. It's good to see you here today.

  • emmalita

    They did get back together.

  • Mrs. Julien

I am now working through a drama class exercise in which I change the meaning of the sentence "She gets to touch him," according to which word I emphasize and how. Carano still comes out the winner every time.

  • thatsmrsnyder

I feel like you're trying to emphasize something but can't for the life of me figure out what it is...

  • Bob Genghis Khan

I'd say with Haywire she had a pretty sweet gig...plucked out of MMA fighting, given the starring role alongside some strong male supporting actors, with an Oscar-winning director. And people basically ignored it...don't know how you get 'better' than that, but I would say she's already been given chances most women in Hollywood don't get.

  • Fair point. Really, if nothing else, Soderbergh was willing to give two untested women (Carano and Sasha Grey) a shot at legit acting when others would have laughed at the idea. I gotta give him props for that.

And let's be honest, she has a bit more range than, say, The Statham. And he has tried, god bless him. It is just hard out there for a glistening paragon of human physicality and violence.

  • kushiro -

Seriously, THIS. She was basically handed her own movie on the basis of, what, she's really good at fighting? I don't understand why she somehow deserves a great acting career more than anyone else.

There seems to be this thing that if someone is successful in one area, then they shouldn't have to do anything to achieve in another. "Well, he's good at football, so let's give him an panel show on ESPN. He's certainly earned it. You, though, you're gonna need like 10 years of internships and assignments in Nowhere, Nebraska".

And I like her, and thought Haywire was decent enough.

  • Mary229

I have to agree. I don't personally find her that charming. I enjoy watching her fight but I find her like nails on a chalkboard when she speaks. I think she has the appropriate career for her skills and appeal. I wish her well but I don't think she is missing out on being some huge star. She's just not that good.

  • You get what you can get.

  • L.O.V.E.

    And she can get it.
