The Silver Lining

Well the bright side to never getting to see “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” finish is that Joss Whedon gets to poach even more experienced sci-fi talent for the upcoming season of “Dollhouse.” The latest to sign on is Summer Glau, who is slated to appear as a mysterious recurring character named “Bennet.” I wonder if she’ll wear horn rimmed glasses and have a whiny daughter.

Here are the current upcoming guest stars (in addition to the likes of Eliza Dushku, Tahmoh Penikett, Amy Acker, and Alan Tudyk): Summer Glau, Jamie Bamber, Michael Hogan, Alexis Denisof.

If Whedon crams many more veteran sci-fi actors into “Dollhouse,” it will form a black hole of fandom squee, a squee singularity if you will.

Awesome header picture. Dollhouse grew on me after the first few (horrible) episodes. I'm not really looking forward to the second season.

PS
Why does pajiba have all those annoying full page ads happen after EVERY CLICK?

And, of course, I meant I AM really looking forward to the second season.

*le sigh* Long day.

Posted by: TheMegaSage at August 27, 2009 8:43 PM

and then we find out that Bennet was the original Caroline, cause you know Caroline was actually the prototype for the first doll and not an actual person, and since she was the first she was so boring and lame that they erased her again and made her into echo. Echo realizes there is no point in going back to being Caroline cause she was a lame ass frankenstein and decides to move to cabo and sell souvenirs on the beach while bennet gains her caroline original self back who turns out to be super awesome and rules the show for the next 5 year. the end.

and tahmoh penikkett is required to beat up people while naked during every single episode thanks to a "24" kind of split screen.

Squee Singularity. That's my new band name.

Here are the current upcoming guest stars (in addition to the likes of Eliza Dushku, shirtless Tahmoh Penikett, Amy Acker, and Alan Tudyk): Summer Glau, shirtless Jamie Bamber, Michael Hogan in an eyepatch, shirtless Alexis Denisof.

That's what you meant, right?

Posted by: jM at August 27, 2009 8:55 PM

Dollhouse is terrible. I'm a Whedonite. Really, I am. But it's fucking atrocious.

I still watch it though. It stars Eliza Dushku! And Amy Acker (from my Top 5) is in it! And now Summer Glau!

My initial problem with the series was.... was... oh man, Summer Glau...

Anyway, the reason it doesn't work for me is because.... mmmmm Summer Glau...

(Hold it together, TSF, damn it! There's people here!)

The show had potential but it was problematic from the... the, um.... Summer Glau is in it now?

I.. I'll b... BUNK

Posted by: TSF at August 27, 2009 8:55 PM

If Jamie Bamber's gonna be on, maybe I'll finally start watching this show.

And then maybe someday I'll get around to watching Firefly.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at August 27, 2009 9:00 PM

You've never seen firefly? Go to hulu and watch it right now - no reason to deprive yourself any longer :D

Posted by: Royalewithcheese at August 27, 2009 9:04 PM

Lord knows I only ever watch the show simply because of the people on it (except for Dushku). I guess I can start paying attention to the story and stuff now. Yay for Alexis Denisof being in things I watch again? (Not that he wasn't hilarious on HIMYM.)

Posted by: Annie UhOh at August 27, 2009 9:13 PM

Best news of the day. No, the week.

*sigh of ecstasy*

Posted by: Jerce at August 27, 2009 9:17 PM

So Dollhouse is going to create a squeengularity, is what you're saying.

Posted by: sistercoyote at August 27, 2009 9:21 PM

Summer Glau and Amy Acker on screen together is going to be hotness overload. And if Alexis Denisof can come in and give an Alan Tudyk-like performance the show could stay at the decent level it achieved once the network stopped screwing with it.

Posted by: Dave at August 27, 2009 9:29 PM

The one thing that might bring be around to Dollhouse is not Summer Glau, but Tahmoh Penikett who I keep forgetting is on it. Can someone give me a relative level of his involvement? Like, is he in every episode, or just occasional ones?

And I heartily concur with rio on the naked and beating people up. I mean, Helo was my TV husband but I always wanted him to just be a little bit tougher, you know?

Posted by: Rusty (formerly Genny) at August 27, 2009 9:32 PM

Summer Glau is cute as all get out and Whedon continues to find ways to populate his shows with attractive women.

And yet I can't be bothered to watch Dollhouse. I tried it and didn't like it.

Oh well...more Summer Glau is a good thing.

Posted by: Fredo at August 27, 2009 9:34 PM

This is driving me insane. I stopped watching because Dollhouse is mostly awful, and Eliza Dushku is a plague on my television. And since the first season ended, they've begun adding great actor after great actor. Maybe some of them will rub off on Dushku? Or they could all give her some lessons? Or best of all, maybe one of them could kill her off and take over as the main doll (I'm talking to you Summer)?

Posted by: Cindy at August 27, 2009 9:34 PM

Rusty,

Tahmoh Penikett is probably in every episode.

Posted by: TSF at August 27, 2009 9:38 PM

Or a "singularisquee"....

Man, between Summer Glau and January Jones, my spank calendar is filling up fast...

Posted by: Odnon at August 27, 2009 9:38 PM

And also, what's with the new Mezmo-tronic (tm) blue load screen? Anyone else getting that? Are you trying to hipmotize me before I even get to the pages? Like some secret gov't mind control "you will only go to Pajiba now" kind of thing?

I mean it's cool and all (yessss massster....) but now it seems to take even longer to load up the page. Like you want me to sit and think about what I've done before you let me on. (yess master... ryan reynolds abs are hot...)
Or twitch like a sugar junkie waiting for the bakery to open (yesss massster... must smash Gary Busey..!).

Big ay-men to #1. As for #2, I think we got at least a little Agent Ballard in every episode during S1...and now that he's been recruited into the House and, apparently, is Echo's new Handler, I expect there will be more, which is yay.

I can't figure that guy out. At first I thought his acting was every kind of wooden terrible, but as I keep watching (closely, because it's very fun) I am starting to wonder if he is just marvellously subtle.

And the looks are another paradox. The man is so ugly he seems to come right around the curve back to handsome, somehow...sorta like Clancy Brown.

Posted by: Jerce at August 27, 2009 10:22 PM

Oh, and I think the new background screen is great. Now bring back that wonderful Firefly thingie you used to have in the masthead and I will love you as I used to.

Posted by: Jerce at August 27, 2009 10:24 PM

If any of you saw any of the episodes of Dollhouse S1 and thought it was eh then make sure to check out the, currently only on the DVD, 13th episode of the season, also known as Epitaph One or "the lost episode of Dollhouse".

That episode really rocked compared to the rest of the season.

It was filmed when the show was not definitely coming back for a second season and really takes the show in a new and darker direction and hopefully in a totally different way then S1 which was mostly procedural.

Also it has Felicia Day so it has to be good!!!

Posted by: Arib at August 27, 2009 10:51 PM

Now this ranks highly among the greatest headlines I've ever woken up to. The next step is to take Dushku out the back and shoot her, and just focus on some of that amazing secondary talent they have going on.

Posted by: Chugga at August 27, 2009 10:51 PM

Oh, Dollhouse...I mean the general concept is great. I like it. I really do like it but two things have just worked against it.

1) Eliza Dushku couldn't act her way out of a grade school theatre camp. She is horrible, hence the reason why they focused on the ad campaign of her half naked. (not that I mind...she is hot...until she speaks)

2) The main reason it can never work. FOX! The damn abomination of a network that destroys talent and good concepts. Their demands of ratings right from the start without proper time to develop characters and stories just makes my blood boil. (as well as damn reality shows). The show might be better from the start if they had kept their noses out of it. NOW granted, they have been better about giving shows a shot and standing behind it but in the end it is still FOX, the ruiner of hope and dreams for all time.

Summer Glau along with the nice list of guest stars is great. (and oh is she nice to look at) I will watch because I am a whedonverse geek as well as a BSG geek as well as glutton for punishment. IN the end though, I don't expect the series to last a full season this year or to ever live up to potential.

Until next time.
EXCELSIOR!

...a mysterious recurring character named “Bennet.” I wonder if she’ll wear horn rimmed glasses and have a whiny daughter.

Nah...
i was thinking maybe Arnold Schwarzeneggerr would impale her with a pipe saying "Let off some steam Bennett"

Posted by: Scott at August 27, 2009 11:24 PM

Tahmoh Penikett, Amy Acker, Alan Tudyk, Summer Glau, Jamie Bamber, Michael Hogan, Alexis Denisof...are you serious? why am I not watching this show? I didn't care a bit about the first season but seeing actors from Angel, Firefly and Battlestar Galactica in the same place is enough to motivate me to go and watch it; I guess I'll see the first season so I can give the second one a chance, even if only for the sci-fi actors

Posted by: Radlum at August 27, 2009 11:27 PM

A little Summer always makes things better :-). I guess Joss is just lucky to be afloat around the time other sci-fi flagships either sank or disappeared over the horizon.

Just finished Dollhouse season 1 and it definitely picked up (we're even getting episode 13 next week, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epitaph_One).

A virtuoso actor might have helped eps 1-5 but as it stands, it was a lot better with the ensemble started sharing the load. While it's nice to see the guest list (Jamie Bamber surely has to do better than the utterly shite L&O UK), I'm mainly happy they kept Alan Tudyk as psycho-villian, he was the highlight of the season.

There's potential for an Angel S2-like transformation so long as Joss keeps his hands on the wheel and doesn't take his cult for granted.

Posted by: Squirrelgripper at August 27, 2009 11:49 PM

Am I the only one who wants to get ahold of Glau...in that exact moment in the picture?

Posted by: Deistbrawler at August 28, 2009 2:05 AM

If you watch the (excellent) unaired pilot Fox scrapped it's entirely clear how being forced to reshoot it and de-emphasize the mythos screwed up the first half of the season (likely forcing Joss push the stand-alone episodes forward in the season so he'd have time to rework the more arc-centric ones).

The transformation to awesome takes place in episode 6 as soon as the central arc comes back into line with the unaired pilot.

To anyone hesitating on this show on the basis of the first 5 or so episodes, don't be fooled. It gets there in a big way. Even the first episode of the wire was nothing special.

Tamoh has plot development in every episode.

Shit. shit, shit!

I really hate Eliza Dushku but I really love Jamie Bamber. Can I start watching the second season without seeing the first?

Posted by: Agent Scully at August 28, 2009 8:56 AM

I really want to like Eliza Dushku, really I do. She seems to be like a really fun person to know and she is beautiful she just cannot act.

Anyhoo I actually liked season 1. not the greatest but I love the concept behind the show and I loved the feeling of the Dollhouse itself. At times the show wasn't strong enough but I have a feeling if Fox truly lets Whedon do wha the wants this show will become a powerhouse like Buffy is(still referenced after how many years). With these new characters coming aboard with such great sci-fi actors I am very, very happy.

Posted by: Angelmonster at August 28, 2009 10:03 AM

Yay for Alexis Denisof being in things I watch again? (Not that he wasn't hilarious on HIMYM.

I had to look up who he was on HIMYM, because despite owning two seasons on DVD I didn't remember him on it. And holy shitake, I had no idea that's who played Sandy Rivers. He looks diiifferent. In a bad way. British people/people who I know as British characters should never be that tan.

Eps 6-12 are worth catching, but it might not be essential. So long as you know that Alpha is a psychotic ex-Doll bad guy, there aren't too many other hanging threads you won't pick up.

Posted by: RandyPanTheGoatboy at August 28, 2009 11:58 AM

Keith Carradine is joining the cast as well.

People can hate it all they want, but I like Dollhouse. Considering the steaming shitpile that is much of the rest of TV, it's damn near Masterpiece Theater.

RE Rusty (formerly Genny): "The one thing that might bring be around to Dollhouse is not Summer Glau, but Tahmoh Penikett who I keep forgetting is on it. Can someone give me a relative level of his involvement? Like, is he in every episode, or just occasional ones?"

He's in every episode (that I can recall). He's the FBI agent trying to "bring down" the organization behind The Dollhouse.

Yes, I felt kinda dumb typing that. And... I'm already over it.

Posted by: Slash at August 28, 2009 4:11 PM

I waited and waited for Dollhouse to get good, but it just didn't. There'd be one kinda good episode but then it seemed like there had to be two shitty ones to make up for it. Even when Alan Tudyk showed up it didn't get better, it was just the same old crap but now with Alan Tudyk in it.

The thirteenth episode that was released on DVD only was amazing, though, and Buffy and Angel's first seasons were mostly awful, too, so I have hope. And I was hoping Summer would jump ship to Dollhouse after Terminator was cancelled.

squeengularity?

Posted by: icecreammang at August 30, 2009 2:08 PM

Spike was supposed to be a random guest star, and he eventually became a regular because he was so effin cool. Just sayin, I wouldn't mind Ms. Glau hanging around Dollhouse permanently...
