I Will Ambush You All Into Apathy

Then I Will Steal Your Change. Go Joe! / Dustin Rowles

Trade News | January 29, 2009 | Comments (38)

I have no idea why anyone would have any interest at all in checking out the new movie posters for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. But here they are all the same. I don’t see Joseph Gordon-Levitt in any of them, although he may be one of the dudes with a mask on, which is kind of a waste of Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Mostly, though, they look like leather-pants variations of Storm Troopers. If this is the best you can come up with for the movie posters, there’s a reason I have absolutely no confidence in the ability of this movie to not completely suck.

Hey they stole my evening wear for Snake Eyes' uniform! I want commissions mother fuckers!

This movie is going to be AWFUL.

Posted by: Handel at January 29, 2009 10:41 AM

They have these same posters at my local S&M shop.

Posted by: B-Unit at January 29, 2009 10:41 AM

I can honestly say, none of these are what I think of when I think of GI Joe.

Posted by: Gabs at January 29, 2009 10:42 AM

I won't even expend a lot of energy. So:

booooo.

Posted by: Jay at January 29, 2009 10:43 AM

Who gives the green light to this stuff? Seriously, when they create a movie like this are they only looking at the film or the whole picture of marketing, DVD sales and toys? Might be a dumb question but damn if it does not look like a dumb movie. Since I have two boys in the target demographic, I am going to be stuck seeing this one.

Posted by: richmac at January 29, 2009 10:45 AM

Sweet Unholy Cthulhu. This reinforces my strong belief that I shall never waste my money on this flaming sack of canine feces.

Posted by: The Wanderer at January 29, 2009 10:46 AM

From the posters, it seems they are targeting a certain audience. An audience that likes body armor. Which makes sense, you know, because who doesn't like body armor.

But the inherent irony is that they are trying to appeal to a crowd that would be impressed by body armor, and that crowd is most likely to be made up of people that need body armor to, like, oh I don't know, go to work. And yet, they get to work, and do they have amazing body armor that can withstand nuclear fallout AND hide cellulite at the same time (which is what that fourth poster seems to be telling me)??? No. What kind of promises are we making here, HMMM???

I have an idea. Don't spend millions of dollars on a pile of shit ripped from the gang-raped nostalgia of crap 80s cartoons and spend that money on MAKING ACTUAL BODY ARMOR--THAT ACTUALLY WORKS--FOR THOSE PEOPLE THAT MIGHT FUCKING NEED IT. Really.

Posted by: boo at January 29, 2009 10:54 AM

I like how you can tell who is playing what role passed on their armor abs. White guy with compact metal abs? Leader. Black buy with slightly more spread out abs? Side-kick with bonus for explosive rolls. Guy with a mask, no armor and actual abs poking through? He's either a bad guy henchmen or a sidekick with bonuses for assassination and ninjosity.

Posted by: VentureSister at January 29, 2009 11:00 AM

Also, JGV is playing Cobra Commander. Let me just repeat that one more time: Tommy Solomon is playing Cobra fucking Commander. Try and wrap your brain around that shit.

Posted by: VentureSister at January 29, 2009 11:02 AM

Sorry about. JGV is supposed to Joseph Gordon-Levitt or JGL. In case you didn't get it.

Posted by: VentureSister at January 29, 2009 11:04 AM

And apparently the......"baroness"...comes equipped with a cordless drill now.

I am not going to fly into another rant about how there's a lot of examples on flickr of con costumes that shamed this movie before the tailors even took sienna miller's measurements. No, like I said, I'm not going to expend the energy. I'm not, I'm not, I'm not.

(That one Canadian woman's apparently taken hers down though. That's a shame, and she should not evacuate now in her hour of triumph)

Posted by: Jay at January 29, 2009 11:21 AM

Hey, don't hate, it's a Matrix/X-Men/G.I. Joe crossover, like the Van Helsing of semi-future combat. How could it possibly suck?

Posted by: Darcy at January 29, 2009 11:26 AM

When I was a wee girl, I wanted to be Scarlett. Does anyone know anything about the actress playing her? Should I prepare myself for an atrocity on the level of Halle-Berry-as-Storm (another childhood hero of mine I saw destroyed on the big screen)?

Posted by: Melissa at January 29, 2009 11:31 AM

Yeah, Jay, I was never much one for bashing cosplay because 99% of everything in the universe is garbage, but that remaining 1%? That would be the guy with professional movie model design experience building full-body cyborg suits in his spare time.

I can see why X-men dropped the loud costumes for something that would look a little saner on the big screen, but this is just... lazy.

like the Van Helsing of semi-future combat.

I love it.

Posted by: twig at January 29, 2009 11:44 AM

atrocity on the level of Halle-Berry-as-Storm

Sheeeeeiit. This movie is Halle-Berry-as-Catwoman.

Posted by: Jay at January 29, 2009 11:46 AM

There are chick Joes?

I didn't even know there were chick Joes.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at January 29, 2009 11:48 AM

Wait a sec....is that first one supposed to be Storm Shadow? Storm Shadow's uniform was white!

Sons of bitches!

Posted by: admin at January 29, 2009 11:49 AM

"Sheeeeeiit. This movie is Halle-Berry-as-Catwoman."

Now now, Jay, we have a new level of bad: Hillary Duff as Bonnie.

Posted by: boo at January 29, 2009 11:51 AM

I didn't even know there were chick Joes.

Sure, there are lots of them. You can usually find them hanging out on corners in the less savory parts of town. Just look for the bulge.

Posted by: admin at January 29, 2009 11:51 AM

But there's no Shipwreck in this movie. Wouldn't that type of character fit perfectly into a Hollywood action film? He'd be the Navy version of Hudson from Aliens.

The only way to evaluate this film will be to compare how it stacks up against Starship Troopers.

Posted by: branded at January 29, 2009 11:52 AM

I think it's just in shadow there, admin. There's a still here

http://flickr.com/search/?q=baroness

(said cosplay favorite is the woman in Toronto. There's still pictures, just not attached on her own page anymore [might even be someone here]. Still, if I've got a polite, silent crush on that and other wonderfully crafted costumes there's probably plenty of charming messages and comments from others)

Posted by: Jay at January 29, 2009 11:56 AM

*cools rage*

Thanks Jay, I was about to cut someone, anyone really, I'm an equal opportunity kind of guy.

Some of those costumes are really pretty awesome. Not nearly as nerdy as Star Wars/Trek. I'm just sayin.

Posted by: admin at January 29, 2009 12:02 PM

Faye Dunaway sure seems to think so, boo.

Word, boo.
My husband is in law enforcement, and it bothers the crap out of him that at any given moment he can turn on a TV show or movie and see weapons and equipment real-life agencies cannot acquire--"we just don't have 'em in stock/they're too expensive"--but when Hollywood comes a-knockin, suddenly there are AR-15's everywhere. (Or what have you.)

Big snaps to David Spade for his Christmas gift to the Phoenix PD. I now forgive him for his entire career.

Posted by: Salieri2 at January 29, 2009 12:28 PM

But if I'm being honest, it's not even the costumes and casting sapping enthusiasm. I was a much bigger fan of later wave characters. Flint, Lady Jaye, Firefly, Tunnel Rat... Plus the figures were better made. That original Snake Eyes was a skinny, boneless piece of shit.

Remember that episode where the one nameless grunt (not Grunt) has a nervous breakdown over neither side ever winning? It was a freaky meta moment I tell you.

Posted by: Jay at January 29, 2009 12:36 PM

Personally I can't wait until they get to Care Bears on their "Edgy-brooding-violent-live-action-cartoon-remake" binge.

Posted by: stipe42 at January 29, 2009 12:37 PM

A Sommers movie... well that means it's either going to be (likely unintentional) genius or complete shit.

I kind of like the cast, though. No idea how well they fit the characters, but it's definitely a collection of people I like to see on the big screen, many of whom I don't see enough.

Posted by: Eep at January 29, 2009 12:44 PM

What the fuck does your husband want Salieri2, a goddamn phaser?

Posted by: Pookie at January 29, 2009 12:45 PM

Eh, am I the only one who thinks the dark hair makes Sienna Miller look like a low-rent Xena?

Posted by: Anne (in Reno) at January 29, 2009 12:48 PM

Meh

never been a fan

not likely to become one now

Posted by: Protoguy at January 29, 2009 1:26 PM

They lost me at Marlon Wayans=Badass.

I mean, how can he be badass if he's not wearing a dress!

Posted by: Ava at January 29, 2009 1:59 PM

The only one who is remotely recognizable is Snake Eyes. I assume the first poster is supposed to be Storm Shadow. Otherwise, it's more summer collection latex and leather action movie wear. If the movie itself is this unoriginal, it will likely suck as bad as y'all think.

Posted by: stryker1121 at January 29, 2009 3:47 PM

Hey, Dustin? Do you think you could try being more gay when you wr-

I don't see Joseph Gordon-Levitt in any of them, although he may be one of the dudes with a mask on, which is kind of a waste of Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Oh, OK. We're all good here.

Posted by: Sabrina at January 29, 2009 4:13 PM

Even the posters look CGI'd to death. Geez. Abandon HOPE all ye who enter here!

Posted by: ph at January 29, 2009 6:12 PM

Damn it.

I, for one, can't wait to see this.

Yes, it's going to be terrible. Yes, it will, most likely, suck. Suck badly.

But I don't care, I'm going to walk out of that movie theater twelve years old screaming 'Yo, Joe!' at the top of my lungs. I will kick serious romcom-watching-asses, get into my car, run over tons of innocent bystanders, then proceed to get utterly drunk.

Now if only they made Masters of the Universe {sigh}.

Posted by: psic at January 29, 2009 6:48 PM

It pisses me off to no end that none of the men are shot from the back so we can delight in their perfect asses. Not fucking fair.

Misogynist BASTARDS.

Posted by: figgy at January 29, 2009 8:27 PM

I just hope you're not referring to Ms. Miller since, if I can paraphrase Martin Sheen, I don't see any ass....at all.

I turned the brightness way up too, I still wasn't impressed. These fools will one day realize they should've cast Fran Drescher, who looks the part. And imagine her with Eccleston! I mean, fuck it, if the movie's gonna be ridiculous then go for it!
