It’s been a little too long since we’ve heard from GRRM, don’t you think? No worries; with yesterday’s release of The World of Ice & Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones, the author was on the road again — and getting in another dig at the HBO series. While he knows that everything in his head isn’t going to be realized just so, it’s understandable that Martin would now and then take the opportunity to assert his own vision. With this new book, the author makes the most of the opportunity to get an artist’s rendition of the *real* iron throne out to the masses. Though a “rough draft” was first published on Martin’s blog, through The World of Ice and Fire, Marc Simonetti’s final glorious version will likely reach a broader audience. “HUGE, hulking, black and twisted, with the steep iron stairs in front, the high seat from which the king looks DOWN on everyone in the court… my throne is a hunched beast looming over the throne room, ugly and assymetric [sic]…”

Talking about the book at NYC’s 92Y, Martin also revealed Hodor’s real name:

“Well, it’s not his real name. It’s just what they call him,” he said. “His real name’s Walder. If your name was Walder, you might want to be called Hodor, too.”

So why is he called Hodor? “”You’ll have to keep reading.”

Other tidbits (via MTV): There is no connection between the Lord of Light, R’hllor and the White Walkers, “in terms of God and the Devil.”

When asked if the birthing of a dragon requires human sacrifice, Martin answered: “”Interesting notion…There are clues in the books… so… you know… I think I’m going to dodge that one right now.”

I expect we’ll hear more from His Georgeness in the coming weeks.
