Gather Round, Fookin Prawns

We all have a little prawn inside us, don’t we? Or is that human? We all have a little humanity inside us? Well, whichever species you might be, congratulations on getting in here — that’s all that really matters.

Details are emerging about Neill Blomkamp’s (District 9) next, a sci-fi film called Elysium, which was just picked up by Sony Pictures and reportedly given a hefty budget. Though the storyline information is quite sketchy — the film takes place 100 years in the future on a distant planet — some of the other information is damned tantalizing. First, Matt Damon has signed on to play the lead. Damon has quickly become one of my favorite actors; he can play just about any type of role and still manage to come across with that everyman likability. (He’s also currently filming another sci-fi picture, Steven Soderberg’s Contagion.)

Co-starring with Damon are Jodie Foster and former District 9-er, Sharlto Copley. Foster can be up and down, depending upon the movie, but she’s certainly a fine actress and tends to be preferable in serious roles. Copely was outstanding as the infected Wikus Van De Merwe, which was his first professional acting gig.

In a final bit of icing on the cake news, Blomkamp has secured the fantastic Syd Mead (Aliens, Blade Runner, Tron) as set designer. The apparently hard to book artist was impressed with District 9 and bringing him on is considered quite the coup.

Elysium filming will take place beginning in July in Vancouver and Mexico City. A late 2012 release date is expected. Can I print my ticket yet?

FOOKIN PRAWNS! Ahem, I just like saying that.

I had the hardest time dragging darling hubby to see District 9. He thought I was dragging him to see Nine or 9. He liked it, once he realized it wasn't the musical one or the rag doll one.

If Jodie Foster ends up talking like Nell, I'm gonna root for the intergalactic shrimp.

I'm disappointed that you didn't give Sharlto any love for his Murdoch. The new project does sound lovely though I'm a bit abivalent regarding Damon.

Has anyone else ever looked up what the prawns were named after? Those "Capetown prawn" crickets that are the size of minivans? Those things are fucking terrifying.

Posted by: Todd at January 20, 2011 5:38 PM

No no no, in correct South African vernacular, it's "FOKKEN". Pfft, fokken Americans and their awkweird pronounciations.

Oh, and I could be hallucinating here but didn't Ben Foster star in a film called Pandorum where the ship was named Elysium? Any plot relation? Because THAT WOULD BE COOL.

Sorry, I meant "Parktown prawn." Remind me never to go to Parktown.

Posted by: Todd at January 20, 2011 5:41 PM

@ Todd

Not just in Parktown, honey. HEE.

Something I've often wondered, does it count toward a movie's rating if its pronunciation bears little to no resemblance to the way it's spelled and typically intoned? I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have connected "fookin" (or fokken, or feckin' in Ireland) to the word fuck until I was 10 or so. I can't think of one off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure there are a few UK or what have you titles that got a PG-13 despite quite a few fecks and fooks. Anyone help me out here?

District 9 = Overrated.

...but will it have a soundtrack by Die Antwoord? Please say yes.

Of all the names attached: Syd Fucking Mead! I didn't even know he was alive still. So, I'm at least looking forward to seeing the Making of . . book and drooling at the pretty, pretty pictures even if the movies goes shit.

. . And I was wondering when the Die Antwoord reference would hit. That would be the first sign of the movie going to shit.

Thirded.

I can't separate Wikus and Die Antwoord dude at all in my head. Which makes a funny District 9, and an even funnier Enter the Fokken Ninja.
