Gap Ad or Watchmen Poster?

A Pajiba Informal Quiz / Dustin Rowles

Trade News | November 14, 2008 | Comments (60)

At the end of this post resides the newest trailer for Watchmen, and this one is much much more than a montage of action shots cut to a Smashing Pumpkins tune. There’s actually some plot reveal. And I’m starting to warm up to it a little. The latent geek that I like to keep in the closet wet his undies a little.

But first, a related game. This is a fairly complicated game, and as such, I won’t be keeping score. I don’t expect any of you to get all of these right. In fact, it’s kind of like the Bar Exam for lawyers — if you get about half right, then you pass! Grading is also done on a curve.

The rules are fairly simple. I’ll give you an image, you tell me whether its a Gap ad or a Watchmen Movie Poster. No cheating!

Is it wrong that I really really love the Gap ads? I kind of want to kidnap both Jasons Sudekis and Bateman so I have my own arsenal of cute and funny to molest.

Huh. I saw Quantum of Solace, but I didn't get a Watchmen trailer. Harumph.

Posted by: docsmartypants at November 14, 2008 11:05 AM

*hands in geek card* I really need to read this. Before I see the movie.

Also, I want Jon Hamm to smile at me. All the time. That man is too many different kinds of gorgeous.

Posted by: lizzieborden at November 14, 2008 11:11 AM

Awesomeness in that trailer. Now all we need is the Star Trek trailer not to suck, and we'll have a good night.

Posted by: Mike R. at November 14, 2008 11:12 AM

WANT.

Posted by: s. pisaster at November 14, 2008 11:13 AM

Amen, Mike R.

Posted by: lizzieborden at November 14, 2008 11:14 AM

I wish I remembered who said it but I have to assume it was around these parts. The comment was "So this is a movie about a bunch of people who can slow down time?"
I think one of my criticisms is that it all looks so glossy. How can Rorshach even exist in a world like that? They better devote some TIME to that guy. I expect a lot from that arc.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at November 14, 2008 11:17 AM

(Looks at trailer) So ... is it 2009 yet?

Posted by: MFS at November 14, 2008 11:18 AM

I think I did okay, but there's no way to know because you forgot the upside-down answers at the bottom.

Posted by: Max at November 14, 2008 11:20 AM

That wasn't The Smashing Pumpkins, that was Muse's "Take a Bow" which like this trailer, is awesome.

Posted by: JC at November 14, 2008 11:29 AM

The previous trailer used Smashing Pumpkins, from one of the Batman soundtracks I think it was.

I just bought a 14 year old The Watchmen novel for her birthday after reading all the raves on this site. She's only part way through it but it has restored her faith in me after the horrible 'Is Cute Is What We Aim For a band or a brand of t-shirts?' debacle. Thank you Pajiba.

Posted by: becks at November 14, 2008 11:34 AM

And is there a new Star Trek trailer this weekend, or just soon?

Posted by: Jay at November 14, 2008 11:34 AM

Jay, there's supposed to be an ST Trailer attached to Quantum as well as Watchmen, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Posted by: Mike R. at November 14, 2008 11:54 AM

Well, the movie site says it'll be there Monday, so I guess it's on a screen somewhere this weekend.

Posted by: Jay at November 14, 2008 11:57 AM

It's probably just me, but image E reminded me of the Chris O'Donnell Robin costume.

Posted by: DoubleH at November 14, 2008 12:05 PM

Well, that guy's kind of a dick too, DoubleH.

Posted by: Jay at November 14, 2008 12:06 PM

Rad. I knew that song would be perfect for trailers.

The difference between the posters is scarves, right? Scarves? Otherwise I'm at a loss.

Posted by: Lauren at November 14, 2008 12:07 PM

I feel kind of bad because Watchmen has always been one of those graphic novels that I've meant to read but never have (I know....I know....) and I kind of want to read it before the movie comes out but if I buy it now then the cute cashier boys at Local Independent Record Store (For all you Atlantans: Criminal Records) will think I'm only doing it because of the movie!

Then what will I do with my shattered hipster cred?!!!??

On an unrelated note: Can we start a betting pool for when Alan Moore begins bitching? Or has he started already?

Posted by: Annie_Reckson at November 14, 2008 12:08 PM

It's all good . . Pajiba so far likes it, and the hairy assed trolls at Ain't It Cool are tearing their underoos and wailing at the violations against their sacred book.

My only whine is that Rorschach's voice should be a calm, even, disturbing monotone, rather than an quiet angry rasp. I don't know how an actor or filmmaker would make the original intention work however.

Posted by: idiosynchronic at November 14, 2008 12:10 PM

I am with you, Annie_Reckson (teehee, erection). I haven't read Watchmen either, and now I don't feel like I can because everyone will think I am lame for coming late to the party and only reading it to fit in. Ho hum.

Posted by: Snath at November 14, 2008 12:11 PM

I've heard a rumor that the film's marketing is sponsored in large part by WalMart, and that's why the smiley faces feature so prominently.

I started that rumor, but whatevs.

Posted by: Amelia Bedelia at November 14, 2008 12:11 PM

Re: Alan Moore; Who knows? Alan supposedly said he was going to quit paying attention to Hollywood and more attention to getting laid. Not a bad idea, IMO.

Posted by: idiosynchronic at November 14, 2008 12:18 PM

Naw, they're nice guys, Annie. I'd sometimes wait for them to be dicks, especially with the pharmacist counter, but it never happens. Hell, the comics guys even know my name now. And now the counter's gone! Parking's more of a bitch but now they've got breathing room.

Besides, people have to rebuy it. My copy's in North Carolina, along with some Transmetropolitan and a Kingdom Come I think.

Don't lend to friends who live hours away!

Posted by: Jay at November 14, 2008 12:38 PM

Oh yeah, my library has Watchmen too, so that's more discrete. And I don't say "poseur", I say "right on!" when the hold requests come in. That teaser with Dark Knight got the action going right away, and I felt proud, as it wasn't a Nicholas Sparks movie stirring up interest. Not this time, Precious! NOT THIS TIME!

Posted by: Jay at November 14, 2008 12:43 PM

I don't know what it is about the look and feel of these trailers, but I'm about peeing in my pants wanting to see Watchmen. Did they resolve the lawsuit thing yet?

Posted by: Cindy at November 14, 2008 12:47 PM

They better devote some TIME to that guy. I expect a lot from that arc.

They will. How can't you? He's really the character that hooks most people into the book.

I read some interview with Snyder where he said that he considered Rorschach's background and his interaction with the prison psychiatrist to be one of three main scenes in the book (I forgot the other two). That made me happy. One of my favorite panel sequences of the book is:

*psychiatrist slides a Rorscach painting to Rorscach* The guy asks Rorscach what he sees.

*shot of painting*

*shot of a dead dog with his head cut open and its brains oozing out of its shattered skull*

*shot of Rorschach sitting there expressionless* His reply: "A pretty butterfly."

Love it.

I agree on the voice. I think it'd be near impossible to pull the creepy monotone thing off well. Raspy and angry will have to do.

I love how Dan looks. I kept hearing how Patrick Wilson put on 20 lbs to play the role and everything, but I just kept thinking the guy looked to fresh, clean and handsome to pull it off. He looked perfect.

I don't think I will ever be thrilled with how Ozymandias looks, but, oh well.

Posted by: ajax19 at November 14, 2008 12:56 PM

Jay...don't you know about the parking lot that lies behind the strip of buildings Criminal Records is on? There's always open spaces there except when they have their Halloween celebration.

Posted by: Annie_Reckson at November 14, 2008 1:05 PM

I think Ralph Fiennes can do creepy monotone pretty well. He can be a scary dude when he wants to.

Posted by: Stella at November 14, 2008 1:14 PM

don't you know about the parking lot

In the new location?

Posted by: Jay at November 14, 2008 1:36 PM

I always wanted to read these, but in a passive, wait-till-they-cross-my-path way, rather than in an active go-to-the-library way. Now after a random conversation about comics my boss lent me all 6 books but they are in GERMAN! I hate reading foreign, and I don't remember anything half so well as if I read it in English. So after two books I got lazy and just looked at the pictures and spoiled the ending! Oops
Maybe sort of spoilery question: Do they actually have superhero powers, or are they just well trained and rich enough to afford gadgets? Or is that sort of left unanswered (except in a single unambiguous case).

Posted by: ChrisD at November 14, 2008 2:14 PM

Yes! The new location! Right across from American Apparel there's that one road, right? If you turn down that neighborhood road and take the second right it looks like you're pulling into someone's driveway but it turns out to be a parking lot.

I'm not talking about the one for the strip that has Junkman's Daughter in it.

Jesus, we need a Little Five Points Pajibacon!

Posted by: Annie_Reckson at November 14, 2008 2:16 PM

Boss! Thank you!

Jesus, we need a Little Five Points Pajibacon!

Well I already told people to come to the Star Bar this past Monday night, but nooooooooo! Not even the tantalizing aspect of hearing me sing "Everything She Wants", "Do You Want To Know A Secret?" and "In A Big Country" worked. If you can motivate this ragtag buncha misfits I'm behind you.

Posted by: Jay at November 14, 2008 2:19 PM

Other than Dr. Manhattan - the single unambiguous case - none of them have super powers.

Other than Dr. Manhattan, Ozymandias would be the closest one to having super powers. He doesn't, but he's sort of like a genetic freak: hyper intelligent, amazing athlete, strong, fast, etc. The rest or more or less fit people who are a bit off their rocker. Some have more gadgets than others.

Posted by: ajax19 at November 14, 2008 2:23 PM

Wow. All those Watchmen posters look fucking ridiculous.

Seriously, the Gap ads look a lot less cheesy, and that's saying something.

Posted by: figgy at November 14, 2008 2:32 PM

Omigosh! I didn't even know about Star Bar! If you ever go again, I will seriously be there if I'm not at work. I will look for any excuse to go to Little 5

Posted by: Annie_Reckson at November 14, 2008 2:33 PM

That being said, I want to jump Jeffrey Dean Morgan's bones. HARD.

Posted by: figgy at November 14, 2008 2:34 PM

Is there anybody's bones you don't wish to jump, figgy? I'm just kind of sensing a vibe, here. Hehe.

Posted by: Snath at November 14, 2008 2:47 PM

Why does that weird blond dude underneath the steampunk batman wannabe look like a dude version of 7 of 9? I got so excited as I scrolled down: blond with not a hair out of place, check!; weird eye thing, bigger than normal but check!; high cheekbones with sour facial expression, double check!; mouthwatering boobs, che-hey, waitagoddamnminnit! Where's the fucking boobs? This isn't Seven, this is some lame-ass knockoff! Boooo!
(Hey, brain, why would Seven even be in some superhero movie? Why self, because those antigravity boobs and the ability to jack directly into computers and assimilate people with nanoviruses and shit would be an awesome addition to the superhero table. And did I mention the boobs?)
At least it's Friday!

Posted by: lordhelmet at November 14, 2008 2:48 PM

Snath DON'T JUDGE ME!

(And yes! I do have SOME standards...)

Posted by: figgy at November 14, 2008 3:03 PM

Hey, I'm not one to judge. I have NO standards.

Posted by: Snath at November 14, 2008 3:05 PM

Those can't be the real posters. I can't imagine college students hanging any of these from their walls. Maybe the Cigar/Flamethrower but I don't like that weird font that's chillin around his left thigh.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at November 14, 2008 4:36 PM

i think this this has way too much slo-mo in it. stop with the slo-mo, snyder. he's in love with that shit and it's bad.

i also now think this movie will officially suck, though i will drop the dime on opening night. i like the philip glass song used at the beginning of the trailer though. still gonna suck.

Posted by: glassyeyed at November 14, 2008 4:47 PM

Oh I go there far too many Monday nights, Ms. Reckson. But my birthday's on a Monday this year and I've taken the whole week off, so that'll work out. Getting home at 3 and up at 6 makes for a rough day.

And I believe figgy is currently separated from her fiance. This causes some issues.

Ob-viously

Posted by: Jay at November 14, 2008 4:58 PM

Yes, thank you Jay! It ain't easy living in separate countries. A girl has to get her kicks somewhere, you know!

Good thing he doesn't read this...

Posted by: figgy at November 14, 2008 5:16 PM

Optimus, he's so badass he has funky fonts with clever taglines coming out of his CROTCH?

I might just watch this after all...

Posted by: figgy at November 14, 2008 5:31 PM

Alan Moore bitching

by the way, he has every right to bitch about how Hollywood and DC have treated his creations

Posted by: Le Kim Nguyen at November 14, 2008 6:06 PM

I so wish Jason Bateman wasn't attached. He's looking so hot these days. He's what, in his late 30s?

Posted by: ph at November 14, 2008 6:34 PM

i think this this has way too much slo-mo in it. stop with the slo-mo, snyder. he's in love with that shit and it's bad.

Based off the trailer, yeah. But the trailer is focusing heavily on the few action sequences in the movie. That's what trailers do. Hopefully it wont seem excessive over the course of a 2 and a half hour movie.

As it being bad. While, I agree it doesn't really work (and seems completely unnecessary) for this film, it was perfect for "300".

Posted by: ajax19 at November 14, 2008 9:53 PM

Eh. I'm losing faith in the Watchmen movie. Reserving judgment until it comes out, but it just doesn't look that good.

Posted by: Lucas at November 14, 2008 11:27 PM

I am not sure I like Ozymandias either. He looks too young, or too small. I am not sure. Also, I am surprised at how Billy Crudup does not sound like Dr. Manhattan. At least, the Dr. Manhattan in my head...

Posted by: llp at November 14, 2008 11:32 PM

Ozymandias looks both too young and too small.

Well, that's the problem with translating any written material to the screen. I am sure Dr. Manhattan sounds a bit different in everyone's head.

I always thought he'd have a slightly otherworldly tone in his voice. What that means exactly or how that should sound exactly, I have no idea. As for the look, I think they nailed it.

Posted by: ajax19 at November 14, 2008 11:48 PM

My problem with Rorschach isn't really the raspy voice, it is that he was saying too much. He tended to drop any kind of flourishes, or superfluous words when speaking, almost as if he were speaking in shorthand. I don't pick that up from this trailer.

Posted by: Ken Hart at November 15, 2008 5:27 AM

I am pretty sure all of Rorscach's dialogue in the trailer is almost word-for-word from the comic.

Posted by: Ajax19 at November 15, 2008 10:30 AM

I am pretty sure all of Rorscach's dialogue in the trailer is almost word-for-word from the comic.

Posted by: Ajax19 at November 15, 2008 10:31 AM

That didn't need to be said so many times....

Posted by: Ajax19 at November 15, 2008 10:33 AM

Yes it did Ajax :) Most of that is Rorscach quoting his diary. His a little more eloquent in his diary than when he actually talks.

Posted by: s. pisaster at November 15, 2008 11:16 AM

I saw both this trailer and the ST trailer at the Bond movie last night. Neither one was particularly overwhelming. They both seem to be banking on the people that will go see it just because it's Watchmen or Star Trek, and not really worrying about pushing it above standard. Maybe they are just really "meh" trailers, but I was definitely expecting to be more impressed, especially with Watchmen.

Posted by: Phaeolus at November 15, 2008 1:49 PM

OK, now I'm a little less scared about what Snyder will do to it, though a lot still depends on what happens when the rest of the characters start to speak. Still, count me in the "guaranteed audience" demographic.

Posted by: Mr Smug at November 15, 2008 6:04 PM

JEH nailed Roschach's voice and posture. The bad-assery inherent in his every movement. What I want to know, is whether his secret identity will be as well realized.
