I feel like a Gambit movie has been in the works for about a decade at this point, with the only real progress being Channing Tatum locked in as the lead. In reality, Charming Potato proclaimed he would do anything to be in a Marvel movie waaaaay back in 2014 and Gambit has been in the works since 2015. At that time there was no writer, but Rupert Wyatt, probably best known for Rise of the Planet of the Apes, was attached to direct.

Wyatt left and Doug Liman stepped in. A multitude of script rewrites were reported. The original release date was touted as December 2016. Liman bounced.

Next up in the director’s chair was Gore Verbinski. Lizzy Caplan also signed on at some point to co-star in the movie. Since there is no synopsis and no word on script contents, we have no idea who Caplan will play. We may never know, because Verbinski has stepped aside as director as well.

Reports say it was an amicable split, perhaps a conscious uncoupling of the man and the film. I think that the scripts must be Fifty Shades of Grey in quality or Tatum is refusing a scene wherein he dances seductively to Ginuwine.

In either case, whomever the hell owns the film at this point (Marvel? Disney? Fox? Disfoxvel?) may want to snag another director quickly. That Valentine’s Day 2019 release date is closer than you think.
