Does it piss anyone else off that in the book she wanted to be left alone and never used sex for power, yet the movie poster makes sure to have her half-naked. Is Hollywood incapable of not sexualizing every female character? Here's a book about a woman who was horribly raped and brutalized. I know! Let's put her naked on the poster so everyone thinks she's hot!

There is a girl on that poster? I just see Daniel Craig...

Also, SPOILERS. Thanks. I was planning to read the books before the remakes came out, but I like going in knowing all the important details, so... awesome.

in order: It does, but it's so common that I think I must be numb to it by now. Hollywood is incapable of sexualizing everything because they are so locked into the "sex sells" mindset that everything else has dribbled from their minds.

But, and this is a big but, maybe it will drag people who haven't read the books to the theatre and perhaps that might be a good thing? I won't excuse it because I'm honestly just tired of the constant barrage of sex in the media...

I think Spider Jerusalem (and Warren Ellis) said it best: "Some day I'm going to drop a bomb on this city.

A Contraceptive Bomb."

Yeah, I'm not getting the sexualizing of Lisbeth either. Why does it look like Blomkvist is protecting her when it should be the other way around? Really muddled messages they are putting out with this thing. It's a striking image, but doesn't fit the story.

Markus: It's not really a spoiler so much as a motivator. Besides, LOTS of people are murdered and raped in the book. Men taking power over women is major theme in the series. The original title in Sweden was "Men who Hate Women" and it fits well.

@shawnmarie -- Surely you exaggerate. Of course Hollywood can make a movie without sexualizing its female character. Let's see now. Hmmm. Hmmm. Hmmmmm. OK, got one. Daisy Werthan, Driving Miss Daisy. And then there's...

A theme of the trilogy was the rampant sexual exploitation of women and violence against them. Sony pictures appears to be suggesting that it can seduce us with stylish movies featuring cool soundtracks so we forget we are checking our dignity at the ticket booth when we pay the price of admission.

I really hate to bring race into an argument because as soon as race is introduced the normal reaction is for everyone to go into a defensive mode. I can’t say if that position is right or wrong, I guess it would be up to each individual to make that call. I said all of that to say this, a lot of white people seem to have a passion for skin and bones; it’s almost as if it is a perquisite that to be considered a beauty you must be skinny as hell. Trust me; there is nothing sexy about being able to see a woman’s sternum.

Posted by: Pookie at June 2, 2011 11:41 AM

@markus I promise that's not a spoiler. Read the books, they haven't been ruined for you.

Posted by: shawnmarie at June 2, 2011 12:09 PM

two? She looks really skinny but no ana

Why is this a suprise?
Fincher is a sexist asshole, look how women are portrayed in his films. Having him direct a film about misogyny is the same as Mel Gibson directing a Holocoust film.

You'll see, Daniel Craig will be made into the main character and Lisbeth will be his sidekick. Typicial Hollywood.

Why does it look like Blomkvist is protecting her when it should be the other way around?

i like to think he's hiding behind her. :)

But, Blomvkist (Daniel Craig' character) is the main character. I wouldn't exactly call Lisbeth his sidekick, but she was his helper. The problem here is the renaming of the book from the original Swedish title (mentioned above). By renaming the book after Lisbeth, it does give the impression that she was the main character, when she wasn't.

Also: nipple.

Markus, I hope you were being sarcastic...the books have been out for years now. Just like movies, books have a spoiler expiration date. And since the book has already had 2 sequels and all of the books have been made into movies, I'd say that date has passed.

I will be very interested to see how this movie does in Europe. It's one thing to remake a Swedish movie that is only a few years old for American audiences, but why would the French care about seeing a movie in English with French subtitles when they just saw it in Swedish with French subtitles? It had better get great reviews. Otherwise I would expect it to bomb overseas.

Posted by: ed newman at June 2, 2011 2:32 PM

I think there's more to it than her nudity. Craig's face is pointed down and he's standing more sideways, shielding his body behind hers. Mara, on the other hand, is looking straight at the viewer presenting herself with shoulders squared and not attempting to cover herself. I'm still not a huge fan (why couldn't she at least have had a tee shirt or motorcycle jacket on?) but I don't agree that her placement or dress somehow makes her the subordinate figure on the poster.

Posted by: Intern Rusty at June 2, 2011 2:41 PM

Y'all keep talking about her being half-naked. I'm sorry, but I don't see any pants. If she's wearing any they are around her knees. That's full-naked in my book. Geez, get your facts straight, people.

If I couldn't read French (which I can't) and didn't know better, I might have thought this was the new James Bond poster.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at June 2, 2011 3:42 PM

I don't give a shit, Daniel Craig is on that poster and it's all that matters!

Posted by: Nancy at June 2, 2011 5:36 PM

I don't think Lisbeth would ever let anyone hold her like that. Unless, you know, she was about to throw him.

Posted by: Tits McGee at June 2, 2011 6:57 PM

I can't get over how much this all seems like a pained imitation of the Swedish film. They've even photoshopped and lighted Daniel Craig to look like Michael Nyqvist.
