Fuck It — Just Cancel the Show and Give Us Another Hour of “American Idol” / Seth Freilich

Trade News | November 10, 2008 | Comments (20)

Last week, Dustin shared a “Dollhouse” promo with you and suggested that Fox might not treat the show very well. He may just know of what he speaks, as Fox has announced its mid-season schedule and, lo and behold, it may be fucking “Dollhouse” over. The plan was originally for the show to air on Mondays at 8 pm, as a lead-in to “24.” Pretty nice. But now it’s being buried in the Friday graveyard. It’s getting “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” as its lead-in, as Fox apparently attempts to create a sci-fi Friday thing, but I think we can all see how this is going to turn out.

Now we can piss and moan about Fox, but there’s another way to look at it. The expectations will likely be much lower for the show on Friday than on Monday (in fact, that’s likely part of why “Sarah Connor” is getting moved, as the show’s getting killed in its Monday timeslot), which means Fox may be a little more willing to air it out even if its ratings blow. The other thing to keep in mind here, sacrilegious as it may sound to some of you, is that “Dollhouse” may just actually turn out to be a turd. None of the clips have been particularly enticing and, more importantly, it’s had a lot of script and behind-the-scenes troubles, the latest coming just last week when filming of the seventh episode was reportedly shut down for at least a day because the script was fubar. I know some of you Whedon lunatics already have hard-ons for this show but I’m just saying that we probably need to go into this thing with severely tempered expectations, both because it may not be that good and we may not even get to see that many episodes in the first place.

And so why not go ahead and make "Tear Off Your Own Head" the theme? After all, it was written for a TV show that never got made, so give Elvis some money!

I'd feel so bad. I condemned Dollhouse in a fit of Star Wars-Backlash-Backlash. I'll take the blame for this one, folks.

And I'll hold you to that, Optimus Rhyme. Don't think I won't.

But.. But... But.. He Called him Hans.

I completely agree about the clips not being enticing - so at this point, I'm not expecting much.

I will, however, follow TSC to any night.

Seth, an unrelated question. What did you think of that foward pass call last night. I think they got the reversal right, bu I might be a little biased.

I do not have a hard on for Whedon, sir; I have a lust for Dushku. Please try to keep them straight. (Yes, I've seen every episode of Tru Calling - do you want to make something of it? *takes off earrings*)

Why does Whedon keep going back to Fox? What good did they ever do for him?

Posted by: Lucas at November 10, 2008 11:36 AM

I hate Whedon AND Eliza Dushku. I hope this blows so that they'll both stop inflicting crap upon the world.

Posted by: figgy at November 10, 2008 11:51 AM

i think it will be good not great .

Posted by: GILP at November 10, 2008 12:23 PM

I'm with Lucas here: why on earth does Whedon keep going back to Fox when they keep kicking him to the curb? If nothing else, I bet Sci-Fi would wet its pants over the chance to air a new Whedon series.

Seriously, what is it with this network? They got beer-flavored contracts?

Posted by: Snorklewacker at November 10, 2008 2:01 PM

Figgy, I'm in a good mood so I'm going to pretend you're being sarcastic about Joss and Eliza. If you were being serious I'd have to get quite indignant and perhaps even demand a retraction, if not an enumerated justification. I may even have to resort to a formalised protest, or even an objection. And it's way too damn early for civilised diplomatic shenanigans. Don't make me go there. There's no happy ending for anyone.

I love Whedon and everything he touches, but this is the EXACT same thing that happened with Firefly. Fridays with John Doe, which I also adored in a nostalgic, Quantum Leapy sort of way. I believe the assumption is sci-fi fans are the only ones home on a Friday. But we aren't either, and all shows fail there. I HATE THEM SO MUCH.

Posted by: puppetdoug at November 10, 2008 2:13 PM

OMG. Figgy, we just broke up.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at November 10, 2008 2:14 PM

Well, all I've ever cared about is "Firefly", and nothing else, but that seems to be the exception.

Posted by: Jay at November 10, 2008 2:22 PM

I'm sorry! I'm sorry but it's true. It's true.

lordhelmet: nyaaaaaaaaaaaah! is my mature justification.

AvB: *sniff*. I get the dog.

Posted by: figgy at November 10, 2008 5:45 PM

Very well Figgy, you leave me no choice: until you apologise and do penance, I am going to have to downgrade you from insightful and fun to tragically misguided. Yes, I went there. I hope you've learned a lesson today, young lady. Now let that be the end of your transgressions before I have to get even more stern!

Remember, this hurts me more than it hurts you.

Posted by: lordhelmet at November 10, 2008 6:58 PM

The whole reason Whedon agreed to work with Fox is that the fuckers who cancelled Firefly (and Family Guy and Arrested Development) all left or got fired. And now their replacements are fucking him over again just as trust was being restored. Fuck them, the fucking fucks.

Posted by: Audiosuede at November 10, 2008 7:10 PM

Is there any discernible reason why this sort of show couldn't go to HBO? Whedon has all the street cred, they can't get enough of intelligent drama and then we'd at least be guarenteed it on DVD in Australia.

Stupid dumb FOX screwing all my favourite shows before I even have the chance to see them.

Posted by: Anna at November 10, 2008 7:51 PM

lordhelmet :(

(wait...you think I'm insightful and fun? that's so sweet. Ok I'll go back to my penance corner now)
