Fox Renews 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine,' 'The Mindy Project' Plus Two More

By Dustin Rowles | Trade News | March 8, 2014 | Comments ()

Though both Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Mindy Project felt like shows on the bubble based on their ratings, Fox is defying their own reputation by not cancelling the two, bringing back Brooklyn for a second season and Mindy for a third. Though neither show generates impressive overnight ratings, they do well on DVR, and they are adored by critics and other people that matter (it’s nice to matter, isn’t it?)

Meanwhile, unsurprisingly New Girl has also been renewed, and somewhat surprisingly The Following has as well. Unfortunately, The Following’s renewal makes the renewal of Almost Human less likely, as Fox is only likely to bring one of those low-rated, expensive series back and Kevin Bacon apparently > Karl Urban.

Elsewhere, if you’re holding out hope for Enlisted or Raising Hope. you should probably stop doing that now (but you should continue watching because they are great).

The worst part about The Mindy Project has always been Mindy and they've been focusing too much on the will they/won't they with Dr. C and neglecting the rest of the ensemble which used to be the strongest part of the show. New Girl also has to pick up the pace. It used to work great as an ensemble show, but now it's just the Jess and Nick show and a lot of it even feels forced.

I really liked Linda Cardellini's recent run over the last few episodes. It appears that the Schmidt across the hall experiment is over. I like seeing Winston and Coach together (gym, test, etc), and the Cee Cee and Coach stuff is okay.

I can see your point about Nick and Jess, but lets not forget that this show was basically a Zooey vehicle, she is the main character and will generally get more screen time.

  • Ben

Maybe Almost Human would have better ratings IF YOU AIRED IT IN THE RIGHT ORDER YOU FUCKING IDIOTS!

Seriously why the hell do they do that shit and then complain that people don't watch it?

  • YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!! B99 is a hilarious show, and Mindy fulfills all of the romcom cravings in my life. Also: Chris Messina. HUZZAH!

  • dizzylucy

Really happy about B99 and Mindy. Hoping Raising Hope will squeak by again, but it's already lasted longer than I ever expected.

  • DominaNefret

I watched my first episode of Enlisted the other night and adored it. Sigh. I shall enjoy this season and be happy we got one.

  • Sean

As long as Bob's Burgers comes back, I could care less about the rest.

It was renewed last year before season 4 even started.

I would have burned Fox to the ground if it wasn't.

Glad to see 9-9 is official, it should have been a lock after the Golden Globes win(s).

*Prepares to pour one out for Raising Hope.

Now what about Community and Suburgatory?

*Anyone watch Sirens on Thursday? It may be my favourite new comedy after 9-9.

  • Jiffylush

I started watching Suburgatory because Jeremy Sisto was in it (Billy from Six Feet Under). I liked it enough and have been watching pretty regularly. After watching The Evil Dead my focus changed away from the dad and right on to the daughter. That movie and her part in it was amazing and I will probably watch everything she is involved with from now on.

Happy for Mindy Project and Nine-Nine. And New Girl even though I stopped watching it.

    Enlisted :(

very "stripes"-y episode! i loved it!

  • ASFan

I think a lot of people suggest it would be better off on Tuesday with 9-9 and the others, but it probably won't get that chance.

  • competitivenonfiction

I had no hopes left for Brooklyn Nine-Nine, so this is my happy, unexpected news for the day.

  • I know it was foolish to tune into Almost Human, because it's Fox and science fiction and I love the cast. I am not optimistic that they'll renew it, but a little part of me is holding onto a shred of hope.

  • Collin Scott

Fringe lasted more than a couple seasons though....

  • Fabius_Maximus

True, but that was Abrams and they didn't show the episodes out of order.

  • Billybob

Wait, never mind a third, The Following got a second season? Why? How? Why?

  • dizzylucy

I'm puzzled by that myself. I watched the first season and by the end of it was so filled with rage at how awful it was. You couldn't have paid me enough to watch season 2, but I guess some people did?

  • Jifaner

I made it through 2 episodes of season 2. It made season 1 look like great drama. Such a waste of a cast.

  • 724wd

people really watch it? i tried, but it was just so... not fun.

  • I hope 'Almost Human' beats the odds and gets renewed. It's a decently entertaining show. Besides, I have a theory that it's a 'Judge Dredd' prequel and I could always use more evidence.

  • Jiffylush

    That theory is wonderful

  • Green Lantern

I don't know anyone who's watched "Almost Human" and hasn't liked it. WTF, Fox? Dummies...
