Fox In Negotiations To Bring Back 'The X-Files' After David Duchovny Climbs On Board

The final, crucial piece in the attempt to get the X-Files back on our televisions screens has come into place, as David Duchovny has now joined Gillian Anderson and creator Chris Carter in expressing his desire to reboot the series for television, saying that he is “more than happy and excited to bring it back and do it again.” Certainly, there are still some contracts to be signed, but the will of the talent is there, the interest from the audience clearly exists, and Fox TV Group chairman Gary Newman says that they are currently in negotiations to bring it back.

There’s still a question about when, although Duchovny says that it will probably be “sooner rather than later,” and another question about the number of episodes, but on that count, Duchovny also said he’s too old to do an entire season. So, expect a 10-13 episode season, and I’m cautiously optimistic that everyone can put it all together in time for the series to return by January of 2016.

And you know what? Unlike most TV series reboots (24), I am legitimately excited about the return of The X-Files, assuming that Chris Carter brings with him a great writers’ room (no offense to Carter, but I don’t really trust him to write great episodes of his own show).

My one concern, however, is that — instead of offering closure — a new series is so popular that it results in more seasons, more unanswered questions, and even less closure. It’s a risk that I’m willing to take, however, for one of my favorite series of all time.

Meanwhile, remember the baby that Gillian Anderson was pregnant with on The X-Files? That baby’s name is Piper and she is now 20 years old. How insane is that?
