Flying High Now

Riding high on the buzz surrounding her performance in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, Natalie Portman seems poised to take over the lead role in Gravity. Just last week it was reported that Angelina Jolie had dropped out of Alfonso Cuaron’s (Children of Men) big budget science fiction survival story, supposedly putting the film in jeopardy. But the critical raves she’s received for her Black Swan performance has turned Portman into a hot property and apparently given Warner Brothers confidence to outright offer her the role.

Gravity tells the story of a lone astronaut stranded in space after the rest of her team is killed by an exploding satellite. The film also stars Robert Downey Jr. in a minor role, but the tale primarily revolves around the female survivor’s attempt to get back home to her child. Since the lead will be onscreen alone most of the film, a strong actress who will draw an audience and can carry a movie solo. Apparently Portman’s Nina is just that good.

Black Swan is set to open December 1, 2010 and Gravity is headed for a 2012 release.

Is this the same astronaut/mother role that was supposedly going to Scarlett Johanson or the Gossip Girl?

If so: Natalie Portman,
I fucking LOVE YOU.

Isn't this just Moon with a woman as the lead? Without the twist? Or the science fiction equivalent of Castaway?

Not that's bad - Portman will kick ass. She's one of the handful of actresses that I can think of that could pull it off.

eh... as much as I like Natalie Portman... I don't think she has the screen presence to handle this role.

I am very excited for this film, but only as long as the script is kept scientifically accurate. If she gets home by catching a ride on a passing asteroid, I'm out.

oh well, there goes that movie

Natalie - mmmmm... ever since she became legal, she's been on my short list of celebrities that I must get a free pass to sleep with. None of my exes objected to this selection... I wonder why?

Wrong person for the role, I think. Natalie is too young to play an astronaut and does not have the screen presence needed to be by herself on screen for a couple hours. And, what happens when "Black Swan" opens and nobody pays to see it? (Even though I definitely will see it. Love ballet.)

Oh well. Not my problem.

I trust Cuaron. Besides, it's a dir's prerogative to dreamcast his movies. I like Portman even though she has crinkly face and the goofy blahs for two of her go-to expressions. Yet she is gorgeous and totally workable. She's even with Angie there, if not moreso.

Just wait to see what I do with Jim Carey when he's 60.

Ian ftw.

Here's the thing: You like Nathaniel Portman?

You like 14 year-old boys.

Well... I have no idea if the movie is going to be any good, or if Natalie has what it takes to carry it solo.
But she's most certainly a better actress than Jolie!

Hurray, "Moon" with a lady! Yippee!

Wait, will we get to watch her take showers and stuff? Because she's a hot little thinig. She has that school girl look that gets me go---

*loud knocking at the door*

Huh. Wonder who that is?

*opens door*

Hey, fellas! How's it going? What does Eff Bee Eye stand f--oh shit.

I dunno. I kind of got a Ryan Reynolds "Buried: In Spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace" vibe off this.

meh. I dont see Natalie as a great actress or as a sex object. I'm struggling to think of a great performance she gave in anything. I'm also struggling to see her as a sex object since she has the body of a skinny 13 year old boy.

She's too bland to be a solo lead...
