“Flight of the Conchords” Is Having its Wings Clipped
Series Endgame / Seth Freilich

humans-are-dead.jpgI’m not a big fan of HBO’s “Flight of the Conchords.” I find most of the humor too forced in a “look how wacky and crazy we’re being” sort of way (although, yes, the “Humans are Dead” and David Bowie stuff is decent). So I’m not terribly bummed about the fact that Season Two of the HBO series will probably be the last. But for those fans out there, of whom I know there are many, sorry.

Seems that the well is running dry for Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, who say they’re having trouble coming up with songs for the season, having milked most of their old repertoire dry last season. Says Clement: “We’ve got a lot of half-songs…. We’ve got an album’s worth of beginnings of songs.”

Huh. I guess it turns out that forced wackiness can only be forced so far.

Of COURSE the well has run dry. But that never stopped SNL, did it?

I am very bummed. No more Boom King. Although it is better to go out early than late.

Goodbye Murray.

I was a fan, but I agree, better to burn out than fade away.

Although I thought the HipHopopotamus' rhymes were bottomless.

This is pretty sad, they have quite a few songs that I really love (It's Business Time? Awesome. It taught me how to spend my Wednesday nights)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess it is better to stop while they're ahead than continue if the show's quality is going to suffer. But still, NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, flip.

There's a picture of New York, There's a Picture of New York, There's a big fat crazy picture of New York... Sometimes when I freestyle I lose confidence.

Three words:

Good fucking riddance.

WHY....

do they want me to take out some aussies for them, or WHAT?

What kind of musicians say they've run out of songs after two short seasons on the telly? Fucking idiots got themselves into the wrong business.

I liked them better when they were called Tenacious D.

These guys are not just musicians, they are comedians, writers, actors. We got 12 episodes last year, each with at least 2-3 songs with clever and amusing lyrics. That's 24-36 songs. If each episode is to feature 2 songs that is 20 songs which is more than a full album's worth for a true "band". Which they are not - they are a comedy duo.

Put it this way - Presidents of the USA, a band in the same vein as the Conchords, has put out 5 albums of 12-13 tracks over thirteen fucking years. The Conchords exhausted their material in Season 1 (with the exception of "Jenny") and to write another season need 20 more songs. So I forgive these "fucking idiots" for not having 20 songs written in a year and a half. Even crappy bands like Nickelback take 2 years to come up with 12 shitty songs with stupid lyrics. Those guys took a song like "Rock Star", with its absurdly mundane melody and goofy lyrics, that could have been written by FotC and performed as COMEDY, and released it as a goddamn SINGLE.

I'm just happy we're getting 10 more episodes. Goodbye, leggy blonde. I had a favorite TV show, but it died.

As a huge FOTC fans, I have to say I'm glad they're not pushing it past season 2 if they already feel tapped out. The first season is an absolute gem, IMO. And there are way too many shows out there that started out so brilliantly, but kept hanging on until the shark ultimately jumped, completely tainting their memory (Alias, X-files, Prison Break). I'd rather have 2 quality seasons where the guys got to do what they do best without constant Network tweaks and repetitive half-plots. PHONE!

Of fucking course...just like Austin Stories, Get a Life, The State, Mission Hill and every other show I ever liked.

I'm going to miss those sheep fuckers. Loved the stand up routine and was pleased with how it was translated to the series. Could have been so bad.

As a fan, I find the series SO funny and original. It's the shame that they're not continuing with it beyond the 2nd season, but it takes time and an actual BRAIN to come up with funny songs like they do (and not trying to rehash old shit either). I don't blame them for struggling with finishing their songs. If only most comedy series had half the sheer ridiculous funniness that these fools dig up...than I'd probably finally get cable because there's something to watch on HBO.

I love the tv show. It's not "forced wackiness" it's a subtle, gentle mockery of ambition and general human folly. (Sorry if I sound pretentious.)It's similar to the Mighty Boosh..

I worried it might go unappreciated by long time residents of the United States, as you're conditioned in a humor (judging by t.v.) that is broader and "punch line" oriented.
