Oh Captain My Captain

Alrighty then. I think we can now say that the Avengers are officially assembled, at least in pictures, anyway. We’ve seen Iron Man, we’ve seen the Hulk, we’ve seen Thor and Black Widow. Now, finally, we can see Chris Evans as Captain America as he’ll be seen in Joe Johnston’s The First Avenger: Captain America. This isn’t the concept art, these are actual set pics, both of Evans and other cast members. The pictures appear in the new issue of EW, a magazine that I loathe, but that gets good scoops. Here’s the newest plot synopsis:

The year is 1942, and Steve Rogers is a scrawny lad who desperately wants to fight Nazis for his country but can’t because he’s been deemed physically unfit. His fate — and his physique — is radically transformed when he signs up for Project: Rebirth, a secret military operation that turns wimps into studs using drugs and assorted sci-fi hoo-ha. There’s a love interest (Major Peggy Carter, played Haley Atwell), there’s a sidekick (Bucky Barnes, played by Sebastian Stans), and there’s the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving), Hitler’s treacherous head of advanced weaponry, whose own plan for world domination involves a magical object known as The Tesseract (comic fans know it better as The Cosmic Cube)

And now, the pics. First, to appease the ab-hungry:

cappy2.jpg
Clearly, Evans has gone from “jacked” to “really fucking jacked” for the film.

Next, the cover shot:

OK, that’s a horrible picture that initially filled me with dread. But it’s also shopped to death. The uniform looks good though.

cappy1.jpg
I dig it. The old school look is working thus far.

triangleshield.jpg
The original Cap shield. Looks just right.

hydrasub.jpg
The high tech HYDRA submarine.

atwellandevans.jpg
Evans and Haley Atwell as Peggy Carter

redskull.jpg
Up top, shot of Stanley Tucci as Dr. Abraham Erskine, developer of the Super Soldier serum that turn Steve Rogers into Captain America. Below, the first shot of Hugo Weaving as Johann Schmidt, aka The Red Skull ( no news on whether the actual Red Skull visage will be the original masked incarnation, or the “death dust”-caused modern one).

OK, a few thoughts: One, Hugo Weaving looks fucking radass (thanks, RobP) and has that sneer fucking nailed. I like the dedication to accuracy, both historical and comic booky. Evans has always been an entertaining actor, but it remains to be seen how capable he is of anything beyond glib/snarky. Much like Ryan Reynolds, he’s known mostly as a prettyboy with a nice bod and a wry grin. Reynolds proved himself in Buried. Let’s see what Evans can do. Actually, here’s an interesting quote from him in the EW article:

“At the time, I remember telling a buddy of mine, ‘If the movie bombs, I’m f—-ed. If the movie hits, I’m f—-ed!’” After declining the part three times, Evans took a meeting with Marvel execs and Johnston and was dazzled by their plans for the movie. He still felt wary about suiting up for Captain America — but then he had an epiphany. “I was just scared,” he says. “I realized my whole decision making process was fear based, and you never want to make a decision out of fear.’” Evans signed a six-picture deal with Marvel to play the character, and he has no regrets: “I can’t believe was almost too chicken to play Captain America.”

Interesting. I like Evans. I’m not sure of him as Cap, but I’ve never seen him give a bad performance, I suppose. Honestly, the x-factor in this is really going to be Johnston, who’s got some major ground to make up after his dismal adaptation of The Wolfman. But the script is supposedly quite good, and the polish by Joss Whedon likely made it even better, so I’m keepin’ my fingers crossed.

These images definitely have me looking forward to this more than I had been previously. Still not sure where Cap scratching his balls fits into the overall narrative of the piece, but the more I see of Evans in the role, the more convinced I am he was right the choice. Or, at least, a very good choice. If this is Marvel's way of getting us to mentally accept Evans as Cap, kind of like WB did with leaking shots of Heath Ledger as the Joker, then it's working. On me, at least.

And you're welcome, TK. You're all welcome.

RE: The ripped leather jacket, dirty helmut photo.

I know he's supposed to look dirty and roughed up, but that's the cleanest leather and helmut with fake dirt I've ever seen. They're practically shiney.

Posted by: BWeaves at October 29, 2010 10:41 AM

The "dirty Helmut" has been banned in 6 countries.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at October 29, 2010 10:46 AM

Whither his chest hair? All of the joy in my life withers in its absence.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at October 29, 2010 10:47 AM

The stills look promising enough.

Posted by: FordbiddenDonut at October 29, 2010 10:50 AM

damn you, cover of EW. i want to see THE MASK.

bitches.

Posted by: gp at October 29, 2010 10:51 AM

Mrs. Julien, I stared at his shirtless pic for about a minute going, "Something is terribly wrong here!" and I couldn't put my finger on it. And then it hit me, like a terribly manscaped epiphany: his gloriously fuzzy chest was bare.

My heart hurts.

Posted by: Kayanne at October 29, 2010 10:51 AM

"Clearly, Evans has gone from “jacked” to “really too fucking jacked” for the film."

I've fixed that for you (from a former Chris Evans admirer perspective. I don't really care about the movie.)

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at October 29, 2010 10:58 AM

Duckface. The Chive would hate that picture.

(That's right -- I visit other websites. Go fuck yourself)

Posted by: superasente at October 29, 2010 10:59 AM

I honestly think that Hugo Weaving is one bad-ass motherfucker. Agent Smith, Elrond, V, and now Red Skull? He will fucking own this role, I promise you.

Posted by: Taylor Kozakar at October 29, 2010 10:59 AM

Looks don't matter. All comes down to script.

Posted by: twig at October 29, 2010 11:03 AM

Taylor Kozakar, I always forget how many awesome roles he's played! And whenever I watch one of his movies I think, "who is that guy?" He's probably one of my top google searches -- I can never quite place him. I guess that speaks well of his acting abilities and poorly of my memory.

Posted by: esme at October 29, 2010 11:06 AM

Dude already gets real-people-acting-points for Sunshine, I say. I didn't like that movie in the end but I did think he did a good job in it.

That magazine cover shot is bizarrely 'shopped, though. They made him look like Captain Tightpants!

Posted by: Anne (in Reno) at October 29, 2010 11:10 AM

Kayanne and Mrs. Julien, I read in an interview somewhere that when the director told him to wax his chest he got depressed and sulked for about a week before doing it. I think I may do the same. ::sob::

Posted by: Donut Plains at October 29, 2010 11:29 AM

Stanley Tucci with hair? I'm... I'm not sure if I'm ready for that...

Posted by: Dill The Devil at October 29, 2010 11:42 AM

Why did they Photoshop Chris Evans into Josh Lucas?

Posted by: the new transported man at October 29, 2010 11:53 AM

im gonna laugh my ass off if Red Skull walks up to Captain America and goes "Hello, Mr. Anderson". and then Captain America shits his pants

Posted by: Taylor Kozakar at October 29, 2010 12:01 PM

It seems we have two different Taylor Kozakars again today. Maybe you should put a password on your computer, dude. Or, you know, visit a therapist...

Posted by: RobP at October 29, 2010 12:06 PM

@RobP
you know that whole thing was a joke, right?
Jeremy even called me on it.

Posted by: Taylor Kozakar at October 29, 2010 12:12 PM

@Anne (in Reno)

I'm with you; I thought he nailed his role in Sunshine.

Posted by: just me at October 29, 2010 12:23 PM

Agreed on the Sunshine love.

And I hope that if they keep churning out new superhero movies at this speed, they can at least find some new actors. It's not that I have a problem with either Evans or Ryan Reynolds, but this multiple hero roles-thing just bothers me for some reason.

I mean, it's not like there's a lack of attractive, muscular beings in Hollywood, right?

Posted by: shanmarie at October 29, 2010 12:28 PM

Donut Plains you're telling me the director of Wolfman asked him to wax his chest? Dude, excessively body hair was not your problem with that flick.

Posted by: Kayanne at October 29, 2010 12:31 PM

Stanley Tucci with hair? I'm... I'm not sure if I'm ready for that... - Dill the Devil

Presumably, this hair came from Chris Evans no baby smooth chest.

Posted by: L4NkYb at October 29, 2010 12:46 PM

So instead of taking the most capable and physically fit soldiers and turning them into even more awesome killing machines they decide to use a wimp because.......

In the most dangerous conflict in human history where where you get your head blown off at any second a NON bulletproof heroe decides to use a costume and shield that practically screams "look at me" for every single enemy, especially snipers? Wow that's like begging to get a Darwin award. I hope he doesn't lead anybody

He has a "side kick" who's called Bucky?

Did they take the sub from a Sy Fy movie?

Hugo Weaving...well he just plain rocks. I don't think this man can do wrong

I really hope that their hire some fucking amazing writers cause so far it looks looks beyond idiotic.

I really hope I am proven wrong about this movie.

Posted by: Yesplease at October 29, 2010 12:48 PM

My lack of prufreeding skills brings my family great shame.

Presumably, Stanley Tucci's hair came from Chris Evans' now baby smooth chest.

Posted by: L4NkYb at October 29, 2010 12:49 PM

i am ready for this and ready for thor. bring on the marvel comic movies... that aren't produced by fox. i remember there being talk of an ant-man film staring simon pegg back when the avengers first was announced any word on that?

Posted by: supergwarr at October 29, 2010 1:14 PM

@L4NkYb

We had puzzled it out.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at October 29, 2010 1:21 PM

@L4NkYb

And it could be worse. I used my real name in a post yesterday. My. real. name. In my defense, I did spell it correctly.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at October 29, 2010 1:25 PM

@Yesplease

OHMYGOD! YOU MEAN COMIC BOOKS AREN'T REALISTIC?

Posted by: The Other Agent Johnson at October 29, 2010 1:28 PM

@ longnamed dude

It's a movie not a comic book. Hence why it's important for the source material to be adapted for a live action movie instead of literally translating it. Otherwise it looks retarted

Posted by: Yesplease at October 29, 2010 1:41 PM

OK, first of all, your spelling is retarded.

Second, it's a comic book-based movie, based on a fairly iconic character whose name is, wait for it, Captain America. So it's already inherently a little silly. But you're saying that, what, Captain America shouldn't wear red white and blue? That he should dress as a black ops soldier?

Incidentally, in the comics the shield is made of a near-unbreakable material.

Also, it takes place in the 40's. I don't think Bucky is that weird of a name for that decade.

The logic is flawed. Superman has the most ridiculous costume in history, and the movies keep it and it works. Batman is a gritty, hard-hearted lunatic who wears tights and a cape. And it works.

Perhaps you're overthinking it.

Posted by: The Other Agent Johnson at October 29, 2010 1:48 PM

"I honestly think that Hugo Weaving is one bad-ass motherfucker. Agent Smith, Elrond, V, and now Red Skull?"

And yet, I still can't shake the vision of Hugo Weaving as Mitzi the transvestite in "The Adventures of Pricilla, Queen of the Desert."

Posted by: BWeaves at October 29, 2010 1:54 PM

Yesplease, the government doesn't run experiments on healthy soldiers; they run experiments on the weak, the unhealthy and the cast-offs.

@TaylorKozakar: What am I, the Pajiba Comment Accountant wherein I read every thread and every comment on every thread? That's figgy's job, yo.

Posted by: RobP at October 29, 2010 2:16 PM

So instead of taking the most capable and physically fit soldiers and turning them into even more awesome killing machines they decide to use a wimp because......

Because he was an expendable resource, unlike the soldiers. The reason the experiment isn't continued after his success is because the doctor who came up with it is assassinated.

Posted by: mightygodking at October 29, 2010 2:21 PM

@longname
Exactly. It is inherently silly. But so are a lot of comic books. And you can go two ways with them. Surrender to the silliness like say Batman and Robin or tone it down as much as possible like in Batman Begins

Absolutely. If Wolverine can change the yellow spandex so can this guy

I wouldn't say Superman works. Not really. Spiderman. Now this works which is really interesting cause the Green Goblin looked ridiculous but Spiderman pulls it off. However I don't see anybody pulling off wearing something so idiotic in a war zone.

Although I suppose everything is possible with good writing and good acting. Like V for Vendetta. When I first saw a small part of the trailer I thought it looked kinda silly. But when I watched the actual movie....dear god it was brilliant

So I am hoping they pull of a similar miracle here as well and prove me wrong :)

@super..
Not really. Sick soldiers would skew off the results. They run experiments on whoever they want to. Although of course minorities usually got the worst of it

Posted by: Yesplease at October 29, 2010 2:22 PM

Aaah! Is one of his powers to grow boobs?

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at October 30, 2010 10:37 AM

Ohhhhh Chris Evans. I would hit that straight into next week.

Posted by: Chickaboom at October 30, 2010 12:36 PM

Cap's costume in the comics usually tended to be made out of a special chain-mail, so he was at least a moderately protected blue target. He was also pretty damn capable, so he could balance out the sticking out like a sore thumb. I liked the idea that Cap was used for PR, like in the Ultimates when a soldier is making fun of him for wearing his flag inspired kit (albeit the toned down ultimates version) until Cap runs shield first into a line of German soldiers, who run the fuck away at the sight of him.

If I saw some huge guy dressed in an American flag running at me with nothing but a shield, especially after I emptied an entire clip of ammo into it, I would probably run like hell too.

Posted by: Ken Hart at October 30, 2010 9:55 PM

Ok lets see if I can address Yesplease's complaints with good ol' fashion comic book geekery.

"So instead of taking the most capable and physically fit soldiers and turning them into even more awesome killing machines they decide to use a wimp because......."

Because it was a volunteer situation. They wern't recruiting people because they had no idea what it was going to do. Steve took up the opportunity because he wanted to serve his country and couldn't. The plan was to then mass produce the formula if it was successful and give it to everyone in the army. But something (I forget the exacts) happens, the creator is killed and all notes are destroyed.

"In the most dangerous conflict in human history where where you get your head blown off at any second a NON bulletproof heroe decides to use a costume and shield that practically screams "look at me" for every single enemy, especially snipers?"

That's the point, he wears the costume for two reasons. 1 so that people target him instead of the soldiers he's with (He's supposed to be 'peak human ability' but in practice he's basically super human)and 2, to inspire the people around him.

"He has a "side kick" who's called Bucky?"

Bucky is a code name like Robin, his real name is
James Buchanan Barnes

That cover it for you?

When is Heath Ledger going to get off his lazy ass and make another Batman movie?

What youre saying is completely true. I know that everybody must say the same thing, but I just think that you put it in a way that everyone can understand. I also love the images you put in here. They fit so well with what youre trying to say. Im sure youll reach so many people with what youve got to say.
