But her neck is much shorter in the books!

Posted by: nevin at May 18, 2011 3:25 PM

I like it.

Posted by: Julie at May 18, 2011 3:27 PM

She doesn't look starved. She doesn't look desperate. She doesn't even look angry. She looks heavily photoshopped. She doesn't look like Katniss should.

Way to go.

Posted by: Rooks at May 18, 2011 3:32 PM

I agree that she looks a little too polished right now, but I'm gonna blame that on the fact that it's an EW cover and not on the movie...yet.

(Insert hateful emo fanboy comment here)

Posted by: Johnnyseattle at May 18, 2011 3:38 PM

I think she looks great as Katniss. Much better than I had expected, honestly.

Posted by: The Wandering Parakeet at May 18, 2011 3:39 PM

In the spirit of wishing against reason that this will be good, maybe it's towards the beginning of the games, when she was all fattened up by the capital and not quite disheveled? Maybe?

and nevin yes, her neck was much longer. I think her nose was bigger too. They got it all wrong.

Posted by: Tits McGee at May 18, 2011 3:46 PM

Her nose couldn't be much bigger.

Posted by: Gitley at May 18, 2011 3:49 PM

I still have no ideas what "Hunger Games" or a Katniss is.

I think I will keep myself in the dark on this one as much as possible and see the movie as a blank slate. Tabula rasa...

Posted by: Forbiddendonut at May 18, 2011 3:52 PM

I think the buzz has officially reached critical mass, and I'm going to be forced to read these books.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at May 18, 2011 4:11 PM

No clue as to "Hunger Games". Completely in the dark. I think I'll follow forbiddendonut's lead.

Posted by: Fredo at May 18, 2011 4:30 PM

I think she's perfect and anyone who has seen Winter's Bone should already know she can manage a role about feeding your family and feeling the wait of the world on your shoulders.

Posted by: valerie at May 18, 2011 4:33 PM

I am joining forbiddendonut and Fredo in their "no idea what this is" club. Do we have a quorum yet?

Posted by: trib at May 18, 2011 4:45 PM

Yeah, that's pretty much how I saw Katniss in my head. I read The Hunger Games trilogy after watching Winters Bone so for me this casting is absolutely perfect. I know it's not exactly how she was described (olive skin, etc) but it's how I saw her.

Posted by: TylerDFC at May 18, 2011 4:46 PM

I'm joining the "no fucking clue what this is" club. Are the books worth reading for someone who is a fan of (well-written) sci-fi? If it's Anne Mcaffery type sci-fi I will disown you all.

Posted by: the_wakeful at May 18, 2011 4:54 PM

the_wakeful:
The first book is amazing, but I thought they went down hill from there. But if you read the first book you are most certainly going to want to keep reading. I wish I could go back and just stick to reading #1.

Posted by: baboocole at May 18, 2011 5:04 PM

I thought all 3 were excellent. The whole series is absolutely worth reading. I was shocked by how much I liked it. The books are YA but brutal without the overt graphic violence. Still people die, and they die hard.

Posted by: TylerDFC at May 18, 2011 5:06 PM

I would call the books "dystopian future fantasy" which weds reality TV with gladiatorial games. I've only read the first one, but it was outsatanding. When I finished the last page I yelled "THIS is what teenage girls should be reading instead of Twilight!"

I was so hoping they would cast Hailee Steinfeld, but this photo doesn't look terrible. Jennifer Lawrence got pretty desperate and mussed up in Winter's Bone, so there's hope.

A quorum has been formed. Fredo, trib, the_wakeful and anyone else who would like to join are in.

All those in the "No Clue" club will be sworn to be "kept in the dark" until they see the film. After seeing the film they are then free to read the books and/or learn as much about "Hunger Games" as they desire.

We do not promote nor embrace ignorance, but we must be the litmus test for whether this film is good for people who "haven't read the books."

Ours is sacrifice.

Posted by: Forbiddendonut at May 18, 2011 5:37 PM

Whoa whoa whoa...slow down, Forbiddendonut.

I don't see why we have to read the book afterwards if we're going to watch the movie anyway. That's nonsense.

I'm forming my own lazy quorum for people who want nothing to do with "literature" or fancy "words," and who are content to turn off their brains to enjoy ninety minutes of pretty colors without the burden of have to strain their eyes on a book afterwards. Some of us are 20/20 and intend to keep it that way.

Good day, sir. ISAIDGOODDAY!

Posted by: superasente at May 18, 2011 5:51 PM

superasente, good sir, I implore to please re-read my post.

/waits patiently

Ok, have you read it carefully? In case you have not, I will re-post and highlight the ket language:

"After seeing the film they are then free to read the books and/or learn as much about "Hunger Games" as they desire."

Other than remaining "in the dark" prior to seeing the film, NO one in "The Quorum" is being FORCED to do anything. You are FREE to do what you want.

Freedom. American Freedom. Fuck, yeah.

You are free to be as lazy as you'd like in "The Quorum" or to be as industrious as you like in "The Quorum."

Appologies will be accepted, sir. ISAIDAPPOLOGIESWILLBEACTED!

And as an act of my good will, I accept you into "The Quorum." Congratulations!

Posted by: Forbiddendonut at May 18, 2011 6:13 PM

@Forbiddendonut

I am terrified to be a member of a club that would accept me as a member.

Posted by: the_wakeful at May 18, 2011 7:38 PM

The first book is amazing, but I thought they went down hill from there

...seriously? I think Catching Fire was the best of the three. You had developed characters and an established world, which made it easier to get way more complicated and awesome. For me.

Posted by: KatSings at May 18, 2011 8:57 PM

Considering my Tumblr foamed at the mouth either in glee or dismay today, I read the Wikipedia about all three books. I'm considering buying/renting/"borrowing" from a friend to read them.

Posted by: duckandcover at May 19, 2011 1:53 AM

YES !! Another movie based on a book only read by college brats trying to appear well-read !!

Posted by: Mr. Stitch at May 19, 2011 4:43 AM

Mr. Stitch: Considering the books are Young Adult adventure/thrillers I doubt anyone would call me "well read" for enjoying them. Saying that only "college brats" (uneducated much, Mr. Stitch?) read these 400page tomes is woefully ignorant at best. In conclusion, fuck off the hell out of here, dipshit. You are the poster child for the uneducated that actually BELIEVE being intelligent is a bad thing.

Posted by: TylerDFC at May 19, 2011 6:58 AM

I've asked my film-knowing, book-knowing, know-it-all little sister, and her comment was: "In this picture, she looks like the Pevensie-girl everyone forgot about while the other two went to Narnia." That means we'll go see it together, to either enjoy it, or to make fun and throw popcorn and stuff.

And Mr. Stitch, thanks for giving one of my favourite Disney characters a bad name.

Posted by: Rooks at May 19, 2011 9:21 AM

KatSings:
I'm not saying 2 & 3 weren't gripping and enjoyable, but I feel like they did not capture the same urgency that the first book did. I also noticed the action scenes weren't as clearly developed and easily imaginable as they were in book 1.

Posted by: baboocole at May 19, 2011 12:06 PM

Tan is not olive-skinned. The eyes need to be lighter as well. But a good start, I guess.

Posted by: idiosynchronic at May 19, 2011 1:19 PM

I agree with baboocole , the first book was perfect, the other two were ok but not at the same level. Worth reading though, and looking forward to the movie aswell. Let's just hope it does the book justice.
