First Look: Daniel Day Lewis as the Title Character in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln

By Dustin Rowles | Trade News | August 7, 2012 | Comments ()

OK. That is amazing. Wow. Daniel Day Lewis only bothers to crawl out of his hidey hole every few years, but the man always makes it worth it. This is all we've seen from Spielberg's movie -- written by Tony Kushner and based on Doris Kearns Goodwin's novel -- but it's already clearly a frontrunner for ALL the Oscars. The rest of the cast doesn't hurt, either: Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Robert Todd Lincoln, Tommy Lee Jones as Thaddeus Stevens, Jared Harris as Ulysses S. Grant, David Strathairn as William Seward, John Hawkes as Robert Latham, Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln, and Jackie Earle Haley as Alexander Stephens.

So, basically: Lincoln will occupy all the supporting actor noms.

If I ever meet DDL, I'm gonna have him autograph a penny

  • Lindsey With an "e"

I prefer to remember him with long flowing locks and a chiseled physique yelling "I will find you."

  • stardust

That cast...I need to go sit down.

  • Kolby

Wow. I can't stop looking at the picture. Incredible.

  • MikeRoorda

The real question is, how many vampires do you think he can smite and with how much prejudice?

  • Bert_McGurt

It's getting so that the only time there's competition for Best Actor is the years Day-Lewis doesn't have a movie out.
Good luck in 2014, EVERYONE ELSE.

  • dizzylucy

    Wow, that looks great.
Don't forget Lee Pace and Walton Goggins are in it too.

  • Seriously. They can just go ahead and have the Academy Awards right now. One of the most talented actors of our time in a movie about one of America's favorite presidents directed by America's favorite director? Nobody else has a chance.

I'd like to proclaim that I am now emancipated from my pants.

  • Guest

    Of course he is.

  • Deepak Ravindran

Daniel Day is probably still in character. Make him president

  • Snath

    That man is incredible.

  • Groundloop

Daniel Day-Lewis was in Snidely Whiplash mode in Gangs of New York There Will Be Blood, so I'm curious to see him as a character that isn't "Pure Evil".™

  • Rocabarra

John Hawkes is fantastic no matter what role he is in. That cast looks stellar for sure, but my eyes are always on him!

  • Daniel Day is so method he went out and got syphilis at a Mississippi whore house just for the role.

  • BWeaves

Dustin, you might want to correct the typo. It's Mary Todd Lincoln, not Mary Lincoln Todd.

Anyway, that photo is amazing. I can't wait to hear what he does with the voice.

I can't picture Jared Harris as Grant, but I love him as Lane Pryce, so I think he'll be amazing, too. What a cast.

  • Katylalala

Agreed. I just cannot picture it. Of course, that probably means he'll blow me away, but for now I can't picture him as anyone other than Lane.

Also, I wanted to work in some kind of pun about Mad Men, but am too tired and too lazy, so pretend I did.

  • Haley as Vice President Stephens? Now that's some interesting casting. (Check out the dude's picture:

Also, she was named Mary Lincoln. Todd was her maiden name that she never used after her marriage and it's an odd accident of history that somehow she gets referred to to as Mary Todd Lincoln.

  • AudioSuede

John Hawkes would have made a very interesting John Wilkes Boothe. Any word on casting of that part?

Oh, and WOW YAY AMAZING COOL HAPPY *obligatory adulation*

  • tamatha_uhmelmahaye

That picture and that cast definitely gives the impression that the movie will be one to watch.
