Prepare To Have Your Mind Blown

Well, I don’t know that this was the first image I wanted to see from director Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class. The film, which tells the tale of the origins of the X-Men, focusing on the early days of Professor X and Magneto, is already making me nervous with its overcrowded cast. Now we have the first pics of January Jones (“Mad Men”) as Emma Frost, the telepathic mutant who runs a school for mutants and becomes a member of the Hellfire Club (which will also feature heavily in the film, with Kevin Bacon as the sinister Sebastian Shaw).

Anyway, here are the set pics. Of January Jones. In a big, goofy-assed hat. She looks like a reject from a James Bond winter chase scene. It doesn’t help that I don’t have a ton of faith in Jones. Of course, I think the only thing I’ve seen her in was American Wedding, a film she described as having “a lot of depth and intelligence, and it really just jumped off the page.” Mrs. TK is an avid “Mad Men” watcher, and she’s described Ms. Jones as essentially box-of-rocks dumb with an extra side of stupid. So forgive my trepidation. Other than being sort of generically, blandly blond and pretty, she doesn’t exactly bring much to the role of one of the most interesting mutants in the Marvel universe.

Yeah. Oooh. A big fuckin’ white fur hat. Must be to protect her big fuckin’ brain.

Uh oh. She looks like a fembot.

I assume her skin-tight almost-nothing real costume is under the bulky coat.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at September 9, 2010 11:12 AM

I'm probably not even going to see this in the theater. I no longer have faith in people who have a say in how these movies are made. Waited for X3 to hit dvd and let a friend buy it before I borrowed it from him.

I just love how they say, "let's throw out the source material, come up w/some half-baked bullshit, then throw it on their plate like some starved dog. They'll eat whatever we throw at them."

This may be straw man, but I know I'm not too far off. So, fuck these people and their career-advancing myopia.

Posted by: Recondite at September 9, 2010 11:13 AM

I was expecting something errr... less clothing covered. Something like the header pic.

Posted by: Porkchop Express at September 9, 2010 11:16 AM

Where's Wolverine?

Posted by: Paul Southworth at September 9, 2010 11:20 AM

She eats??

Oh, it's melon. Nevermind. My mind was actually blown for a second there, though.

Posted by: Courtney at September 9, 2010 11:22 AM

This is as ridiculous as the producers casting a 6'2" Wolverine. Oh wait a minnit.

Posted by: Porkchop Express at September 9, 2010 11:24 AM

don't get the hate, she's beautiful, not very bright, not enough reasons to hate, but maybe that's just me.

Posted by: godofbingo at September 9, 2010 11:28 AM

Ah, I laughed at these last night, and I can laugh again today.

Posted by: Jay at September 9, 2010 11:33 AM

[misogyny] Where are the tits!? [/misogyny]

Seriously though, since here creation in the comics, Emma Frost has had the ladies shelved up so high in a white leather corset, that you could eat afternoon tea off of them.

Posted by: professor_love at September 9, 2010 11:35 AM

At first I thought the header pic *was* the set photo.

I was thinking: "Maybe I have some interest in this new X-Men movie after all..."

As it turns out, nope - still no interest.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at September 9, 2010 11:35 AM

Don't get the hate either. She was great in The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada and is really good on Mad Men. Betty Draper is the show's least sympathetic character - which is saying a lot considering what Don gets up to.

I'm looking forward to x-men first class mainly for James Mcavoy and Michael Fassbender (who is amaaaazing in Fish Tank and Hunger). Fingers crossed they pull it off.

Posted by: Katie at September 9, 2010 11:36 AM

someone please find me ANY picture where emma frost is SO COVERED and i'll THINK about not be a big disappointed pile of organs.

Posted by: gp at September 9, 2010 11:39 AM

she looks vaguely like sienna miller... not a compliment

Posted by: betty at September 9, 2010 11:42 AM

I imagine that hat is what Betty White's snizz looks like.

Now I'm kind of jealous of January Jones.

Posted by: admin at September 9, 2010 11:43 AM

I just have to finally say that I do not get the hate for January Jones. Yes, she was terrible on SNL - and SNL is generally awful. She isn't good at sketch comedy - in fact, she's terrible at it - but that doesn't mean she isn't a talented actress. She is AMAZING in Mad Men. Her character is repressed, yes, but go back and watch season 1 - look how she went from being open and loving, the woman Don described as "an angel" of a mother, to the her evolution into a bitter, wounded woman who takes all of her anger towards her husband out on her long-suffering children. She created this really difficult and often unpleasant character but brings enough to it that we still see how deeply Don hurt her behind the frigid mask. It is not an easy character to play, and people who assume it's a cakewalk of a role because Betty is so emotionally shut down now are totally missing the point.

That said, this costume looks ridiculous. Is this all a play on "Frost"? And after the travesty of X3, I'm veeeery wary, despite being kind of thrilled with some of the casting.

Posted by: Edith at September 9, 2010 11:44 AM

I don't mind the outfit -- like you say, it looks like something from an old Bond movie, and my understanding is that the movie takes place in the Sixties. Seems appropriate enough to me.

But I'm in the "Jones is not much of an actress" camp. Betty Draper is supposed to be kind of a cypher who defines herself by the men in her life, so Jones is okay in that role. But I don't have much faith in her ability to pull off someone like Emma Frost. (Side note: I hope they go with the original conception of the character, which was evil. They've hero-fied Emma in the comics recently but when she first showed up? Man, she was a BITCH.)

Posted by: Todd at September 9, 2010 11:45 AM

She IS dumb as a box of rocks! Anyone see her on SNL? By far the worst most dead-eyed performance ever!

Posted by: Amy at September 9, 2010 11:51 AM

She's the least sympathetic character on Mad Men because she's the least talented actor on Mad Men. Nearly every character on that show can be extremely unlikable, yet you can still see beyond their actions to their motivations. She just isn't up to the task - Betty Draper as written could be one of the most fascinating characters on TV, but Jones' acting nearly always falls flat.

That said, I think she's certainly up to the task of your standard crappy Hollywood action movie. She's not a terrible actress in that context - just when she's pitted against one of the best casts around. I suppose I'll find out a few years from now when this movie is streaming on Netflix and I'm hungover.

Posted by: shell at September 9, 2010 12:00 PM

Personally, I think Emma Frost's evolution from "evil" villain to pragmatic hero has been one of the best things in the X-Comics of the last 20 years. She's enabled and hardned Cyclops' character, particularly his leadership skills, in ways Jean never could (though, of course, I still love Jean). And I love that she's a take-no-prisoners badass while fighting the good fight. She's dark, but in a realistic way now, and not so much the cartoon she started as.

Granted, not everyone can write for her. Which means, naturally, that not everyone can play her. January Jones can handle the role, I think, but unfortunately I doubt she'll be all that memorable in it. After all, that hat is going to steal at least half of her scenes, even the ones where she isn't wearing it.

Posted by: RobP at September 9, 2010 12:00 PM

I kinda want that big-ass fur hat.

Posted by: Slash at September 9, 2010 12:01 PM

I think I'd like the Missus.

Posted by: Natalia at September 9, 2010 12:05 PM

she looks vaguely like sienna miller

That's exactly what I said. And what makes it really funny is that it all looks so cheap.

Posted by: Jay at September 9, 2010 12:09 PM

OFFICIAL PREDICTION: That jacket will come off to reveal her pristine white lingerie.

Posted by: Pookie at September 9, 2010 12:27 PM

I co-sign Edith.

Posted by: Amanda6 at September 9, 2010 12:47 PM

abandon all hope for this movie ye have been warned.

Posted by: logan at September 9, 2010 1:04 PM

I agree with Edith... January Jones has got Betty down pat. I'm actually starting to like Betty this season, because Don's revealing himself to be a shitty father. Forgetting your one weekend with the kids that month because your on a drunken bender? Kids all excited and waiting for you for hours? Shitty.

Posted by: ceejeemcbeegee at September 9, 2010 1:04 PM

Wait, Betty slaps her daughter in the face for cutting her hair and threatens to cut off her fingers for masturbating, and Don's the lousy parent?

Posted by: Todd at September 9, 2010 1:49 PM

I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm starting to like Betty - for the reasons Todd mentioned, and hundreds more. I'm just saying January Jones is a much better actress than people have given her credit for. As far as Betty goes, I'm convinced her terrible parenting of Sally is her way of lashing out at Don, especially since Sally has always been such a Daddy's girl.

Personally, I think Carla should get custody of the Draper kids. She's the only one who cares about them.

Posted by: Edith at September 9, 2010 1:57 PM

So far today we've had photos of:

1. Christina Hendricks eating waterMELON.
2. January Jones eating MELON.

3. Can we please, please, please have Jon Hamm eating a bratwurst or some meatballs, please?

Wait, Betty slaps her daughter in the face for cutting her hair and threatens to cut off her fingers for masturbating, and Don's the lousy parent?

The two being lousy parents aren't mutually exclusive.

Posted by: Amanda6 at September 9, 2010 3:12 PM

well thats some damn ugly outfit there.

Posted by: DeckOfficer!! at September 9, 2010 3:20 PM

No, they're not, Amanda6. But I don't understand how anyone can say they like Betty more now because Don's neglectful, when Betty has crossed the line into actual physical abuse (to go along with her established inability/unwillingness to emotionally engage with the children on their level).

Posted by: Todd at September 9, 2010 6:30 PM

Betty slapped Sally, and Don's a bad father.

Parents of the time were far more liberal in dispensing corporal punishment and in general were greater disciplinarians in their child-rearing. If you're going to attempt to impress 21st-century mores on a character who was originated in a universe set 50 years in the past, you'll get stuck. Similarly, we get to see far, far more of the 'real' Don Draper and have more insight into his past and inner life. That doesn't condone his behaviour, it explains it. Betty was never offered this insight, she gets the effects but never the causes. Now that she's no longer in that marriage, it's pretty unrealistic to believe that she could shrug it off and move on. From her point of view, she's been had by a man who, all told, is a faithless, drunken con artist. I defy anyone who claims that that wouldn't make him bitter, at least for a while. And poor Carla, probably sees more of those two little brats than she does of her own family. All too common for the time, hits too close to home for me.

I'll say this much for Betty: at least she shows up.

Posted by: Slash at September 9, 2010 12:01 PM

I don't want anything made out of ass fur, thank you very much.
That said, there's something about photo number three that reminds me of something.....

Posted by: Odnon. at September 10, 2010 1:03 PM

Betty was great for JJ. She's awful and scored a few more miles of coast.

Already hate the new x-men movie. Hate hate hate it. I'll give that X2 was acceptable, but the others I hate with the fire of the clan Askani.

"Yellow spandex," btw, is not a cutting counterpoint. Those are old comics. The new stuff and even some of the old stuff is super chic. Yeah, the White Queen's wardrobe up there-- horrendous. Though no X-men movie has had the otherworldy costume design necessary, neither have they had the execution from their fight choreographer. The nightcrawler/white house sequence remains the only awesome action scene in any x-men movie.

Posted by: Jackseppelin at September 11, 2010 12:34 PM

X-Men First Class is a period piece, Pajiba writer upset at period costume.

Posted by: Mexcillent at September 12, 2010 10:37 AM

When I first saw this picture thought:

"Woah Betty Draper is going full 60s."

Sad that it's X-Men.

Not very flattering and disappointing to say the least. The hat, not very tasteful... The clothes make' her look fat.
