First Five Minutes of Fox's "Utopia"

Fox has a new series debuting tonight called Utopia but rather than the pitch-black British series that Brian mentioned a couple weeks ago, this one is simply a reality series involving a “new society.” They’ve released this clip of the first five minutes in a desperate bid to get people to ignore Sunday night football. There’s a lot of talk in the intro about it being a “perfect world” where people can make their own rules and blah blah blah, but the cast interviews quickly make it clear that people were picked to deliberately set up antagonistic situations. I mean, it’s a reality show on Fox, what do you expect?

Honestly, it’s almost a little disappointing. You can pick any reality series if you want to see people argue and backstab. Dropping a group of people onto a “farm” (and seriously, five fucking acres? Come on now.) and pretending like you’re going to let them rebuild society while setting them up for failure is just frustrating. It would actually be interesting to see a like-minded group of people plan out their ideal society, move to a farm somewhere with space (like, not Southern California) and attempt to execute it. Hell! Pick a few groups with different goals, move them all to their own space and see how different ideologies end up working when you get down to business! We take a lot of things for granted in our society and it’s easy to sit back and criticize it, but actually watching a small group of people struggle to create a functioning society would be interesting enough even if they all basically agreed. Setting up petty squabbles in the name of entertainment is just shallow.

But again, I really didn’t expect more of Fox.
