Robert Ludlum wrote some 25 thriller novels during his lifetime, but having exhausted many of those, Hollywood is now turning into a mostly Ludlum-inspired Covert One for its next potential franchise. The Covert One series of books was written by several other authors, in conjunction with Ludlum. He was something akin to a producer for the book series, which featured a team of political and technical experts belonging to a top-secret U.S. Agency called Covert One, who fight corruption and conspiracy at the highest and most dangerous levels of society. In other words, it’s like a Team of Bournes. Or, Jason Bourne meets The A-Team. Or something like that.

The Hollywood Cog is reporting that producer/director Frank Marshall (Alive, Congo, Eight Below) will direct the movie, which would have the potential to be a franchise. The first novel in the series, Covert One: Hades Factor, was also made into a television movie in 2006 starring Stephen Dorff and Mira Sorvino.

Covert One is one of several projects that Captivate Entertainment is developing, including The Materese Circle, an Osterman Weekend remake, The Parsifal Mosaic, The Sigma Protocol, The Chancellor Manuscript, and of course, Bourne 4. Covert One is being set up at Universal.

Well, with the guy who directed Congo and Eight Below at the wheel, what could possibly go wrong?

Tom Clancy has basically covered all this material.

Ew, you should have warned me about that. I would have worn my protective sarcasm gear.

I actually just listened to a "Covert One" audio book for the round trip to DC and it was pretty much as you would expect: God awful. Like many people suckered in by big words, I was attracted to the LUDLUM I saw on the front. The following 13 hours of driving was nothing short of aural rape. To say that these stories are 'inspired' by Ludlum is an amazing stretch because it sounded like every other spy-thrilling, spine-tingling, edge-sitting, apocalypse-diverting, awkwardsexytime-having, trope-containing dime store paperback. But it filled the time, so no complaints.

Oh, and also, the chick who Dr. Who's "The Girl in the Fireplace" is in it. And she's easy on the eyes.
