Exclusive: Carey Mulligan All But Set for The Cradle Will Fall

Carey Mulligan — the radiant It girl of Hollywood after her Oscar nominated turn in An Education and her upcoming roles in two of this possible year’s Oscar contenders, Wall Street 2 and Never Let Me Go — is all but on board Screen Gems’ Cradle Will Fall, so we’re told by The Hollywood Cog.

The film, which is a priority for the studio, is being fast-tracked and is currently in the casting stage, though Mulligan’s participation is contingent upon a script polish of a Jack Olsen script (formerly titled Within).

The film itself, which is about a baby’s surrogate who becomes obsessed with wanting the baby and the husband for herself — smacks of The Hand that Rocked the Cradle, but one would imagine there’s more to it if Mulligan is interested. There’s no director attached as of yet, but Screen Gems is clearly searching for someone with decent pedigree — Mark Pellington, and Gary Fleder (among others) have been discussed as potential directors, while the laundry list of potential parents have included high-profile actresses like Kate Winslett and Cate Blanchett, as well as Adrien Brody. But according to our source, Mulligan is the linchpin for the film, and once she signs on, the other pieces should begin to fall in place. However, if she doesn’t sign on, Cradle Will Fall might slip into direct-to-DVD fare based on some of the second and third choices, which include Julie Bowen, Billy Zane, Peter Facinelli, and Liv Tyler.

Further development of Cradle Will Fall will also likely depend on Mulligan’s schedule, although it’s light on confirmed parts (On Chesil Beach is in pre-production, while she’s no longer on the short list for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and she’s still only attached to My Fair Lady).

I could script this entire movie plus musical cues in my head right now.

I could even do the trailer voiceover.

So why the hell bother making it at all.

Well, from the other posts it seems that today's theme is Hollywoodland pimpery. Fish in barrels, says I, but let us pile on.

The film, which is a priority for the studio, is being fast-tracked and is currently in the casting stage, though Mulligan’s participation

So, again, bah!

Here we are emerging from the oughties, and damn if the studio trolls, "talent", "media" and the consuming public don't have it backwards. Adrenaline-surfing on every more superficially manufactured "events", ever shallower, faster and shorter, in an ADD-fueled frenzy is exactly backwards.

The interesting thing about the interlocking, intercommunicating, always on web of happening happenings is you can't miss anything, everywhere, but better every-when. It'll find an audience, over time.

So, how about rather than "fast track" the development to cash in on the random it-girl of the moment, they "good track" the production to bet on it finding an audience over time, that is if it's any good.

For the "talent", you gotta cash in, hard, on your 15 minutes if 15 minutes (of mostly dumb luck) is all you're going to get. Talent and craft, and you'll get many shots, and maybe have - what's that called again - a career.

Sheesh. And bah!

That would mean real-life Hollywood producers caring about quality, right? Sorry, I don't believe in Santa Claus and other miracles anymore.
