Oh, brother.

OK, here’s the thing: the first Men In Black film was enjoyable. Not great, not on any top 10 lists, but it was certainly a lot of fun, in no small part due to the undeniable charisma of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. It was clever, it was fun, it had some boffo effects and Vincent D’Onofrio in one of my favorite roles (to this day I like to randomly bark out “Where do you keep your dead?!” to complete strangers). The second one was … not so good. Hell, I barely remember it at all, to be honest. I know I saw it, and I know I didn’t particularly like it, despite the presence of Rosario Dawson.

Well, Etan Cohen is working on a third entry. No director or cast has been signed — who knows where Will Smith’s head is these days and whether a) he’d be willing to return and b) whether Sony Pictures would be willing to pay what would likely be a huge salary. Tommy Lee Jones … who knows. Tommy Lee Jones is an enigma. Yeah, he was in No Country for Old Men, and he was wonderful in it. But he was also in Man of the House. Anyone see that one? I did. My brain still hasn’t forgiven me.

Anyway, according to Dark Horizons, the studio is rushing ahead and wants to start filming in 2010, which is great considering that absolutely no one is attached to it. That type of rushed scheduling always pans out well.

/sarcasm

The good news is that Cohen is a damn good writer, having co-written the screenplays for Tropic Thunder and Idiocracy. Of course, that isn’t to say that a studio isn’t capable of fucking up a great script, but one can but hope. Men In Black is a great premise, and should theoretically have the potential for a substantial series of films (or even someday a really kickass TV show), but that doesn’t seem to be the way things trend. We’ll see.

They already made kickass tv show. There was really great men in black cartoon in the late 90's.

Men in Black was a damned well made innovative concept flick. MiB 2 was an embarrassment.

Now, Will Smith is going around showing what a true closet Sciento degenerate he is.

Which means: I am NEVER. EVER. paying to see another one of his movies. I don't care if it's the second coming of Blade Runner, I ain't putting my money in the hands of L Ron's little gang.

That's how I roll.

Yeah, same here. Funnily enough, my pants were quite grateful.

MIB, along with The Mummy, is my favourite bad movie of all time. And they are KILLING IT.

"The difference is, I make this look good"

Not anymore, Will.

Not anymore.

No love for "MIB 2"? Really? I thought that was one of the few sequels that held up well to the original. Tommy Lee had some great lines in that one, the story was inventive, Lara Flynn Boyle's supermodel monster was pretty great, it moved very fast (they both do at something like 80min run time), and had a nice emotional core. I loved it.

As for "MIB 3" I think too much time has passed but I'll keep an open mind for now.

I'm sorry. The first one is not a good movie. It was a waste of that great premise.

Thanks for the Radiohead reference. It was the best part of this post.

I cannot wait until Mr. Smith releases his new "happy rap and dance" for MIB-III: Tommmy's Got To Pee.

Men in Black did make for a great TV show. It was called The Middleman, and thanks to the strike...dunzo.

That writer is all over the place. I remember seeing his name on King of the Hill a lot, which was awesome. But then there's Magascar 2. He can be pretty great, though, and does a lot of work with Mike Judge. So this might not be so terrible. Can't be worse than the second one.

I'm just so sick of Will Smith at this point, it doesn't really matter who writes his movies. Smith is just channeling the same character in all of his action films.

MiB 2 wasn't awful, just hammy and stupid. Boyle didn't have the same spark that Donofrio did; she was just there to walk around in heels and look sexy. I was more impressed by the cameos than the movie: Michael Jackson (come on, he was a sport about it), Patrick Warburton, the chick from the Mighty Ducks and that's about it.

"Boyle didn't have the same spark that Donofrio did; she was just there to walk around in heels and look sexy..."

An endeavor in which she FAILED, miserably.

Rosario Dawson was in MIB2? Really? Wow.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at November 2, 2009 2:17 PM

First one is still very fun to watch. Lara Flynn Boyle is gross.

Posted by: Mick J at November 2, 2009 3:44 PM

I actually think the 2nd one is the better of the two.

Yes, the first has d'Onofrio, which is always a good thing. But all the good parts were wasted in the trailers. There was nothing left to go on.

The second is funnier IMO. The punch-line were better delivered, and there were more of them.

Who cares!!! My boyfriend also agrees with me. He is 10 years older than me, lol. We met online at age-gap club -- http://AgelessMeet.COM/. Maybe you wanna check out or tell your friends.

Your excellent movie review was the very first thing I read this morning. My cat babies were gathered around me as I chuckled and giggled and almost nearly cried, and I do believe they also appreciated the review mightily.
