Edward Norton No Smash

the-incredible-hulk.jpg

Well, file this under news that’s disappointing, but not surprising.

The Avengers, Marvel’s massive project-in-the-making which will combine the characters from several films from the last couple of years as well as a couple yet to be released, has had its first casualty. Well, the second, if you want to get technical — Terrence Howard was replaced with Don Cheadle as Rhodey in Iron Man 2, but that was actually a good thing.

No, the news currently floating around the trades is that Edward Norton’s Bruce Banner, aka The Incredible Hulk, will not be a part of The Avengers. It’s a shame, really — I genuinely enjoyed Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk, and thought it was a particularly well-cast film (particularly William Hurt as Thunderbolt Ross and Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky/Abomination), and Norton was excellent in it. But the film didn’t perform up to Marvel’s expectations and the studio never locked him up to multi-picture deals as they did with most of the other main players — Downey, Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Captain America) and Sam Jackson (Nick Fury) (we can possibly add Ant-Man to that list, although Edgar Wright’s production hasn’t started shooting yet, nor has the character been cast).

Norton doesn’t come cheap, and given Marvel’s efforts to control the ballooning costs of the films, it’s not surprising that they didn’t seek to re-sign him. That’s particularly unfortunate given that he was apparently very interested in returning, and director Joss Whedon was eager to work with him. That doesn’t mean that there will be no Hulk in The Avengers — there likely will. But Marvel Entertainment will likely look for a lower cost actor to portray the Banner side of things. It’s a similar tack that they took when they signed Hemsworth and Evans — relatively inexpensive actors with a few features under their belt, but not major players… yet.

Like I said — it’s a shame, but not a surprise.

Interestingly, after Marvel announced their decision to move in a different direction, Norton’s representatives released the following statement which indicated that it wasn’t about personality or money, and that initially all indications were that Norton would return. This is from Brian Swardstrom, Norton’s agent:

Here are the facts: Two months ago, Kevin called me and said he wanted Edward to reprise the role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers. He told me it would be his fantasy to bring Edward on stage with the rest of the cast at ComiCon and make it the event of the convention. When I said that Edward was definitely open to this idea, Kevin was very excited and we agreed that Edward should meet with Joss Whedon to discuss the project. Edward and Joss had a very good meeting (confirmed by Feige to me) at which Edward said he was enthusiastic at the prospect of being a part of the ensemble cast. Marvel subsequently made him a financial offer to be in the film and both sides started negotiating in good faith. This past Wednesday, after several weeks of civil, uncontentious discussions, but before we had come to terms on a deal, a representative from Marvel called to say they had decided to go in another direction with the part. This seemed to us to be a financial decision but, whatever the case, it is completely their prerogative, and we accepted their decision with no hard feelings.

Well. That’s certainly pointed. Either way, it matters not — we’re getting a new Bruce Banner. And the latest rumor, from CHUD, as to who that Banner will be is Joaquin Phoenix. But then again, CHUD claims not to publish rumors, though I guess they make an exception when it’s their own rumor.

Nah. Marvel just thinks Norton is an asshole. They released this statement Friday:

"We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in the Avengers. Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks."

Do we even need a Banner? I mean, Banner PUNY.

Joaquin Phoenix as the hulk? Rapping Hulk?

Posted by: superasente at July 12, 2010 9:35 AM

Yeah but Tracer the marvel statement came before Ed's agents statement, his statement was in response to theirs.

I for one get so sick of this bullshit.

You always hear stuff like this, that some actors are total pricks to work with or considered very nasty in real life, and I'm sure some are.

But I've read, in the past, co-star and crew interviews who express honest surprise at the reports people like, specifically Norton actually (but don't ask me to source it cos it was years ago(might have been Empire)) Norton are considered nasty or hard to work with.

Most admit that yeah Norton, in this case, take their work very seriously and can be, at times, bullheaded about a certain scene or lines but that at the end of the day they're decent guys/gals. Yet this reputation lingers...but mostly I think it's because it's Ed Norton.

The fact is that despite the fact he's massive and hugely well known, he's still woefully under-appreciated as an actor and doesn't get nearly as many parts as he should. Part of this is because the Hollywood system is fucked in the ass(so isthe UK film system but yours is bigger) and makes him make films he doesn't want to to fulfil ridiculous contractual obligations and part of this is because of this silly idea he's a grouch.
Look at Christian Bale. I LOVE CHRISTIAN BALE. I didn't give a shit when he went off at that lighting guy because dude, HE WAS JUSTIFIED IN HIS RAGE.

I didn't blink when he was arrested for shouting at his mum and sister(that's what he was actually arrested for. Shouting) because by all accounts his dad raised him for most of his life and his mother and sister are nasty pieces of work and gold digging cows.
It doesn't excuse his shouting at them AT ALL IN ANY WAY but I didn't for a second worry what his 'temper' or the fact HE'S notoriously hard to work with, would do to his career. Because he's Christian Bale.
He's supposed to be insanely private, alarmingly intense and with a massive bad temper...but when he called the lighting guy everything every other actor came out to show support and make statements to the tune of 'well to be fair if it was me I'd be pissed too...'

Ed Norton is as excellent an actor, is, arguably, as rabidly method as Bale, but gets treated like Prime Diva Bitch of all hollywood.
SO MANY ACTORS are dicks but no one gives a shit because they can act well and Ed Norton can
out-act most of them but doesn't get given an inch.

Whelp, me? I dont believe it.
I believe if Ed's not gonna be attached to the project it's because they are going in a different direction than the Hulk he portrayed. Not sure WHAT direction since I think he balanced the emotional and psychological depth of the role very well around the somewhat cheesy SFX but to be honest this will be the THIRD NEW HULK IN LESS THAN A DECADE so I think it's clear that Marvel doesn't always know what they're doing with these films.
Maybe they should accept that despite the deeper psychological issues you could play with with BANNER,the HULK will always be a giant, monosyllabic green man in purple pants and will basically NEVER compete with the darker, grittier/funnier, smarter adaptations taking place around it.

Same goes for the FF and Spidey...there is no possible way to make some of these films without it getting really, really cheesy. You can embrace that cheese and make it a plot thing like Iron Man where his wiseassery and drunken hilarity are character points that are key to the story and character development...or you can strip the cheesiness away and make a taught, psychological thriller like the Nolan Batman...s...Batmen...what ever.

Hulk is one of those films which COULD have some of the deeper psychological issues as Batman, some of the darker and more intense moments of emotion and questionable sanity/morality. But only if you do away with the giant green monosyllabic man in purple pants.
Which of course means it's not a Hulk movie its a movie about what amounts to WoWRage going a little too far.

I'm not sure what my point is...Oh yea, leave Ed alone!!
No but seriously, I think he's somewhat undeserving of this rep as a total douche and what Marvel have done and how they've handled what's happened is cowardly as fuck and he should sue.

I think part of what this comes down to is that he apparently re-writes scenes and lines in films he's in and this obviously causes clashes...but this has nothing to do with whether or not he's a dick, it's to do with auteur-ship(and I mean auteur) and ownership...writers don't like him because he re-writes scenes, they bitch to the directors who bitch to the producers who bitch in general, crew hears about it and suddenly its every where... to be fair, it's never actually stated by anyone whether Norton improved the scene or how much he changed, just that he DID AND ISN'T THAT AWFUL OF HIM!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I understand a writers frustration at someone changing your work, but to be fair if the guy is gonna be playing this character for months, already has been, and feels really strongly that this scene would go differently...did you even discuss it with him or just say no til he was forced to pull rank and go over your head?

What I'm saying is...take everything, Marvel's words, Ed's agents words, with a pinch of salt. There are two sides to everything and just maybe Norton isn't always the bad guy.

And the new hulk film is gonna suck as hard as the others so who gives a shit? He's probably saving his skinny ass from some good old fashioned box office poison

Posted by: Nadine at July 12, 2010 10:02 AM

I really wish they wouldn't use the hulk in the avengers' movie. I just don't think the CGI works well and will ruin every scene it's in.

Posted by: chewster at July 12, 2010 10:04 AM

Also Joaquin as Bruce would be ridiculous. You can not make a good Hulk film unless you GET RID OF THE HULK.

So. Dont. Give it up. Make him a barely glimpsed villain used sparingly and well to create the sense of danger for the Avengers.
Don't even bother to cast anyone to play him since you waste everyone you hire any way when you break out the ridiculous cartoon Jolly Green Giant

Posted by: Nadine at July 12, 2010 10:04 AM

I was reading the news on ONTD (yeah people, sorry, everyone had their own vices) anyway, someone made a comment that for some reason green eyed norton reminded him/her of kyle chandler, and I had an illumination, kyle chandler would fucking kick ass as bruce banner and since FNL is unfortunately basically over he would be available! Joss get on this shit, I bet Adrianne Palicki can sweet-talk Alan Tudyk into talking with Joss about it. Make it happen!

Posted by: rio at July 12, 2010 10:14 AM

I know a few people who worked on the Incredible Hulk set, and they all said the same thing; Norton was a pain in the ass on the set. He often showed up late and usually with the script personally revised to his liking- making much of what was already set up irrelevant. He was cranky, rude to most everyone, and not too keen on taking direction. All of these things sounds like qualities any director would like to avoid.

This is supposed to be a cooperative ensemble. If one actor decides to go mustang, how long before the director has to start worrying about the other egos nitpicking or losing focus? As it is this production is going to require a lot of plate spinning.

Posted by: bleujayone at July 12, 2010 10:15 AM

bleujayone, there isn't a lot I can say to that, if you have first hand accounts...still, I dont believe the Hulk is ever going to be successful as a film, and I don't believe changing the actors is going to make a difference.

At the end of the day, we the audience wont accept the current animated Hulk's because they're ridiculous. We didn't accept Eric Bana and we didn't accept(though we gave him more of a chance) Edward Norton.

I think for Marvel to blame changing the actor solely on the actor who came before is cowardly and to me shows that they're not ready to accept that the Hulk might be best avoided for another few years until a CG Hulk can be created that doesn't make me wet my pants laughing.

I say keep him unseen and at a distance. Have him frequently mentioned through out the other Avenger films as they set up all the characters. Have news flashes and props showing his destructive path, maybe even specify that he's getting closer and closer to a certain point, which is where the ultimate showdown can take place.
Give it enough time, in real years, for the CG effects to get to a point when the CG hulk doesn't look so patently ridiculous that no amount of casting will make these films good.

Like I say, to make a statement like this is as sad as it is pathetic and I'm inclined to believe Ed's agent that Ed was onboard. I get the feeling Marvel have simply had a look at the CG for a new Hulk film, found it lacking and will soon reveal that while they're casting a Hulk actor, he's some unknown athletic type who will appear fleetingly in the avenger films as they downplay the Hulk.

He wont be fully shown til it doesn't suck.

I loved Ed Norton as Banner
(I love him in everything)
but I did read that there were huge conflicts on set, and afterwards, Norton conceded that the director's version was better than his (or whatever he was trying to achieve). I feel disappointed that he won't be in the Avengers movie, but he can't be playing that diva shit in an ensemble piece. I respect that he stands up for his vision, but then I guess he should just write and direct his own stuff, if he can.

Posted by: Chickaboom at July 12, 2010 10:39 AM

Norton, the Jerk Store called. They're running out of you.

Posted by: sars at July 12, 2010 10:41 AM

As far as who might play him, yeah, I don't think Joaquin Phoenix is a great fit. Someone over io9 sort of suggested Bryan Cranston, which I think is actually perfect; he's a bit old, but I don't see why Bruce Banner would have to be young, and he certainly *looks* like a scientist. Also, he's a pretty great actor.

Anyway. I thought that was a good idea.

A couple tips for Mr. Swardstrom, the next time you go trolling on movie review sites as part of a guerrilla PR campaign in support of your client, you (a) may want to use several pen-names, as the readers will get annoyed after reading more than 1 or 2 rambling incoherent comments from the same pen-name of 'Nadine': and (b) should probably get one of your people to spell and grammar check your work, as well.

Best of luck and big hugs!

Posted by: A Bowl of Stupid at July 12, 2010 11:01 AM

come on! Norton was too expensive for Marvel,it's just it!!

Posted by: caro at July 12, 2010 11:05 AM

Hey, Bowl of Stupid, perhaps you are kidding, but Nadine is a regular commenter and a real person, and she's free to ramble about how much she loves Edward Norton.

On an unrelated note, I watched the Eric Bana/Ang Lee version of The Incredible Hulk on the SyFylis channel this weekend, and I liked it more than I remembered. Sure it had flaws, but it was also incredibly beautiful.

Posted by: MM at July 12, 2010 11:38 AM

Holy Rattlesnakes. Bryan Cranston would OWN that role. I don't think you need CGI because when Walt gets angry, you'd believe that he could smash anyone. Man oh man.
Mild mannered scientist- Check.
Bubbling cauldron of RAGE- check.
He could do it.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at July 12, 2010 11:44 AM

Phoenix as Banner is even worse than Evans as Cap.

But Bryan Cranston as Banner... VERY interesting.

Posted by: AmbroseKalifornia at July 12, 2010 12:40 PM

Bowl of Stupid you're pretty.

perhaps before YOU go trolling movie blogs you should get a vague idea of who is a regular commenter ad who is an agent doing damage control for their client.

Just a thought.

Plus my spelling and grammar is an ongoing trap to fool people into thinking I'm dumber than I I really am. And I'm really not that dumb. For example when I delurk on movie blogs I use my ability to read to learn who is a troll and who is a regular. And by doing so I don't embarass myself, publically. At least not while sober.

If you ARE kidding...well I can't see why you would 'pretend' to make such colossal tit of yourself so, um....well done, I suppose for making me laugh so hard.

Posted by: Nadine at July 12, 2010 12:53 PM

Oie Nadine!
I lurve you.

That being said I've heard Norton tried to pull an American History X with The Hulk and was pissed off when Marvel told him to shut the fuck up.

In regards to America History X: "Edward Norton was said to have re-edited the film to lengthen his screen time. Director Tony Kaye then attempted to get his name removed but violated a Directors' Guild of America rule that states that directors that use pseudonyms (such as "Alan Smithee") must not talk about why they had their name removed - which Tony Kaye had done in ads in Variety. Kaye sued the DGA and New Line Cinema for $200 million stating that the DGA rule violated his first amendment rights." The film was supposed to be entirely about Edward Furlong's character.

From what I heard when The Hulk was coming out Norton tried this by wanting to make the movie more Banner and less Hulk. In return Marvel thought no one gave a shit about Banner (Hello! Ang Lee's Hulk) and was only really interested in Hulk. Thus, this route their going now of "No one will fucking care that Norton is no longer the Hulk. The actor portraying Banner will have very little screen time."

I'm serial still laughing over here, bowl of stupid indeed.

If Ed Norton is a Diva, let him deev. He's Ed. He'll curb stomp a bitch

Banner is a whiny piss-bag anyway. Who needs him? Make a Joe Fixit movie and tell Ed Norton to fuck right the hell off.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at July 12, 2010 1:42 PM

Um. ABOS is a much older commenter and yes, he was doing what's generally known as "making a joke".

Ed Norton just has this air of Smartypants that I can never get past. I like his movies, but I don't think he's that great an actor. The mumbling bugs me.

Posted by: Nadine at July 12, 2010 2:37 PM

Nadine, it's a joke that gets brought up just about every time someone makes a passionate and long defense of an actor they love whom they feel has been mistreated by the post or the comments. Not that there's anything wrong with posting a defense of someone you like, I'm just saying that you should pretty much expect someone to respond with "geez, are you their agent or something?" if you do.

It's almost a Pajiba staple.

Enthusiasm dropping, dropping, gone. First those awful costume designs for Thor and Captain America, now no Norton in The Avengers film. Sorry. Robert Downey Jr. is not enough to convince me to sit through anything possibly connected to Ant-Man.

Fuck Marvel. Bring on a new Batman film.

Nothing but net, SLW.

But they would've had them all, if it wasn't for that dratted old woman.

Posted by: Peter G at July 12, 2010 8:33 PM

I bet Eric Bana's asking price is less than Norton's. Maybe we can forget the slopbucket full of CGI machine runoff that was released in 2008 (as a joke, I have to assume), and get back to the one that was at least mostly watchable. And maybe Jennifer Connelly and Sam Elliott could come back, too.

I realise that's about as likely as Jennifer Connelly dumping that jerkbag Paul Bettany and realising she was actually in love with me all along, but a guy can dream.

Posted by: Jim at July 13, 2010 2:47 AM

Robert, I'm with you.
The costumes have turned me way off on the CapAm and Thor films and this just doesn't help.

I really dont like how Marvel have approached these films, they started out SO well with Iron man with a solid production team and actors, a nicely spaced out schedule, strong script and story etc.
They made a REALLY great showing of the clues and hints, the CapAm shield, Nick Fury(still makes me squeeeeeeeeee) SHIELD, the Avengers set up, RDJ at the end of Hulk etc etc...then they sort of...rushed into Iron Man 2 and I feel like they're rushing Thor and despite KENNETH BRANAGH I feel it was badly cast(Chris Helm(??) is great and all but they should have cast the Skarsgaards, father and son). Helm might do okay but in that wig I wont be able to take him seriously and quite frankly the best thing Tony Hopkins has done since Silence was in an advert in the UK for Sky (satellite TV) where he briefly but emotionally recited Rutger's final lines from Blade Runner as an example of one of his favourite movies. It gave me CHILLS.
But other than that he's slept or yawned or hammed his way through everything else and I dont see Hopkins throwing himself into a COMIC BOOK MOVIE with anything other than camp silliness which will destroy the flick.
I'm slightly more hopeful about CapAm but the costume is ridiculous and frankly I'll be watching the films in the hopes Chris Evans and RDJ make out. That happens in the comics right?
Lets make that happen.

Jim, if I can get Jen and Paul to break up, can I keep Paul and make him say things to me? Not even sossy things, he can ask me if I'd like a coffee or how the weather is and I'd be pretty happy.

I think I'll feel better about the films when Hawk Eye really gets moving. Jeremy Renner is the tits and I've been backing this dudefor longer than I dare remember(as it will age me) but I feel like his might be the film that balances out the suck of all the others.

Posted by: Nadine at July 13, 2010 5:05 AM
