It Can't Be Worse Than "Galactica: 1980"

The work schedule might be a bit thin for Edward James Olmos at the moment as he’s decided to write a followup to “Battlestar Galactica” in graphic novel form. Says the erstwhile Admiral:

I think people would really flip out to know what Lee Adama is doing on the planet, what the chief is doing on the planet and what is the colonel doing on the planet and how is the planet treating us and how are we treating the planet? How are we getting along, the human development that we were inside of the human development that we see today. That’s pretty heavy.

I want to know what he’s doing right now, don’t you? I kind of was left with him sitting about to build his cabin, so God almighty I’d like to know what’s happening to him right now. In many moments throughout the day, I’ll think, ‘I wonder what he’s doing? What the heck is he up to? What the heck are those people up to?’ Here they were 200,000 years ago on this earth. They came from the experience that they came from. All I can tell you is: aren’t you guys curious as to what happened to them?

No actually, I’m not. See, I loved that series, and although I initially was more or less satisfied with the finale, it’s gotten more and more off-pissing as time has gone on, moderately drinkable cheap wine going to vinegar with age. And even while the ending was infuriating, it also tied off just about systematically every mystery and loose end. The problem wasn’t a lack of answers, it was that the answers sucked. The only big mystery is whether the 40,000 techno citizens used to living on spaceships starve to death before or after Baltar manages to knock up one of the early humans.

The other problem I have with this is hard to say without being rather harsh, but this simply is not Olmos’ story to tell. It’s one thing when Joss Whedon starts up a comic book series to continue the story of Buffy, but it’d be quite another thing if Sarah Michelle Gellar did. Just because the guy played Bill Adama (and played him brilliantly), doesn’t give him the artistic authority to write a continuation. Or in other words, this is Ron Moore’s story. Anyone else trying to tack on more chapters doesn’t feel like anything more than fan fic.

Well, if it is anything like Buffy: Season 8 I haev to say "Yes please!" Buffy:Season 8 is an immensely satisfying series that truly feels like the continuation of the show. And because it's a graphic novel and not a TV show the scope and visual inventiveness is through the absolute roof. Because Joss Whedon is overseeing with many veteran Buffy writer, the story is considered canon as well. Highly recommended.

I do want to know what happened to the fleet on Earth. My initial impression was they were right fucked since they sent all their technology into the sun. Apparently so did EJO. I'm curious to see what he comes up with. If nothing else, it's cool he was a genuine fan of the material and not just collecting a paycheck.

Gorram celebrities took our jobs!*

*Note: This has nothing to do with Olmos being Hispanic, as I've said the same thing about Tom Jane, Patton Oswalt, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and other actors who get into the comic "writing" biz. I don't try to act, you don't try to write comics, capiche?

No, I am not. Especially if it's EJO's story. My first problem is, he truly believes Adama built his cabin and went on adventures with Tigh. I believe he died, alone, on that rock.

Given what I know of NBCU and, to a lesser extent, Moore and Eick's rights to the reimagined BSG, I don't see how EJO could go forth with this project without numerous people and entities signing off on it and I don't see it happening. NBCU might have plans of their own. We already know of plans for webisodes set during the fist Cylon war. And Moore has nixed continuing the story beyond what we saw at the end of 'Daybreak'. Eddie, since the series has ended, has talked of his dream of a movie (as recently as Dragon*Con two weekends ago) and no one else seems to be interested.

I liked the finale when it aired and I still like it. In my mind, I know what happened to Lee and the others on the planet. Most fans have come up with scenarios of their own for the characters. We don't need EJO messing with them.

I don't mind the ending even now. But it's an ending, not a beginning to a new chapter. And you're damn right it's not Olmos' story to tell in some ghost-written graphic novel fan-fic extension.

I've always thought that the first drought would essentially wipe them all out anyway. The mortality rate would have to be inordinately high.

Can't be worse than this.

...or CAN IT?!

In fairness to Olmos, he DID direct a number of episodes AND The Plan so his BSG storytelling abilities aren't exactly lacking.

Richard Hatch wrote many books continuing the ORIGINAL series. Yes, I liked the story better. HUMANS ARE SUPERIOR

Yeah, this doesn't sound all that great to me. This article pretty much sums up my thoughts exactly. I don't see Adama doing anything but living out the rest of his days in peace, living off the land, enjoying life alone. Plus, even though he did direct some BSG episodes as well as The Plan (which I didn't really care for, anyway), I don't see any reason to expect that he'd have good comic book-writing skills.

I'd invest more interest in it if it was by Moore. Hell, even if it was one of the BSG writers like Jane Espensen who has also worked on Buffy Season 8. Though I have to say, Joss Whedon has set the bar pretty damn high for continuing TV shows in comics.

Really? All I remember from Buffy Season 8 was the HAWT Lesbians (TM Joss Whedon), who seem to feature at least once in everything he does. Now as a red-blooded male so far down the heterosexuality spectrum he can't even remember what homosexual means*, and one who doesn't have anything personally against hot women kissing each other for pointless male (and I guess some lesbians') pleasure, I have to ask where the fuck are the HAWT Gay Guys Joss? Why do we have to see all these straights and lesbians getting it on (in FULL PAGE SPREADS! - W00T!) but never any dudes? Doesn't the idea of Xander being a hot bisexual gettin' it on with dudes all over the place turn you on?

*This is simply to indicate that I have no vested interest in what I'm about to demand. It's interesting how much that looks like the lady doth protest too much though. Also the phrase 'red-blooded male' it makes my skin crawl. But So! I do not edit.
