Two Words that Send Whedon Nation into a Collective Shudder: Eliza Dushku

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Trade News | Comments (40)

eliza-dushku-tv-guide-04.jpg

Here’s a little Saturday trauma, in case you’re looking for some heart failure to get your weekend going. I think that everyone can agree that the worst part of Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse” was Eliza Dushku. Right?

Well, have I got some news for you!

Whedon and Dusku may be re-teaming again. For a feature project, even. It’s not exactly reliable information (it comes from Dushku, after all), but this is what the vapid and wooden actress had to say to Hollywood Life (via Slashfilm) “I think we’re going to work on a kickass feature together that we’ve been thinking about for a few years.”

*Gulp*

Slashfilm has a pretty solid hunch that the film she’s referring to is Goners, a super-duper secret supernatural horror film that’s been in development for a while but has never found its legs. It’s described only as a dark fantasy horror film about a young woman’s journey.

It may or may not be Goners and Dusku may or may not be doing some wishful thinking — I’d like to think that whatever bet that Whedon lost that compelled him to cast Dushku in “Dollhouse” has been repaid. It’s either that, or Dusku has some really messed up photographs of Whedon in some nasty compromising positions.

You know what’s even more horrifying? The question that elicited the above came in the context of talking to her about possibly joining the cast of Ghostbusters 3.

This is what I get to wake up to? Thanks Dustin, you're the best.

What is going on with her leg in that picture?

Posted by: Kate at June (formerly Kate) at February 27, 2010 1:46 PM

She may not be able to act (like the majority of young Hollywood) but she sure is pretty.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at February 27, 2010 1:50 PM

Kate at June:
You're right - that's a freaky ass leg! Is she getting a cramp? That's what I imagine a charlie horse looks like. I don't know for sure because when I get them it's always the middle of night and too dark to see.

Posted by: malechai at February 27, 2010 1:56 PM

Not to thread-hijack but who is our Chilean Pajibette? Sofia? Forgive me if that's wrong but does anyone know if she is alright?

Posted by: AbbyNormal at February 27, 2010 2:01 PM

You're right - that's a freaky ass leg! Is she getting a cramp?

This is what happens in absentia of Photoshop.

Also, isn't Eliza a bit too old for a "young woman's journey"?

I’d like to think that whatever bet that Whedon lost that compelled him to cast Dushku in “Dollhouse” has been repaid.

Dollhouse would never have seen air without her. Dushku had a production deal with FOX and she brought in Whedon. She's listed in all the credits as "Executive Producer."

I agree that she is sadly lacking as an actress; but that still seems like a pretty solid thing to do for a friend.

Posted by: Jerce at February 27, 2010 3:49 PM

Dushku was ok within the limited confines of Faith but the constant character switching in Dollhouse was asking way too much.
She has taken more than her fair share of hate anyway, wouldn't it be nice if Whedon could lift his game? The finest actors on the planet couldn't have breathed life into the damp squib that was Dollhouse. Not getting involved until 5-6 episodes in doesn't exactly demonstrate commitment to the cause.

Posted by: Squirrelgripper at February 27, 2010 4:55 PM

Facebook says Sofi is ok, Abby.
And I guess with Dollhouse you had to take the good with the bad. I looked forward to it every week, it had some genuinely great television moments and it created some good discussion, I thought.
Plus, if it gets the guy who played Victor some more roles, then it was worth every minute.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at February 27, 2010 5:08 PM

Optimus, you're completely right. It was definitely something I looked forward to, although, always with reservation. But Victor was completely the highlight of the show.

Also, I'm not super concerned, as I mostly am a Whedonophile because of the writing (both plot and dialogue) and not because of the acting (exception: Nathan Fillion).

Posted by: esme at February 27, 2010 6:00 PM

Glad to hear Sofi's OK. Chile got clobbered.

Here's one for the El-Du fans... love her, don't care if Dollhouse was crappy.

She be illin.

Posted by: aw naw at February 27, 2010 7:52 PM

I think that Eliza Dushku is good at playing exactly one character. As long as she's playing that character in this movie/show/whatever, it's all good. If she's not, not so much.

Posted by: Royalewithcheese at February 27, 2010 7:57 PM

I so want her to just go away. I hated her as Faith... well I will admit I just hated Faith. And by the connection that she was the one playing Faith, I chose to hate Dushku as well. Minus anything involving Whedon, I only continuously watched one other project she was involved in... True Lies. And I didn't care for her then either. But I love that movie. Its bad in all the ways that I like my Arnold movies. It doesn't matter where its at in the movie or what I could be doing instead, if its on 9 times out of 10, I'll watch True Lies. But I have always had a strong dislike for Eliza Dushku at best. I don't consider her to be attractive. She comes across to me as someone who is generally playing herself in any given role and she isn't someone I would like in real life. For me attractiveness is heavily weighed on the personality and intelligence and my ability to hold a series of actual conversations with said someone, and I get the feeling Ms Stupidface is not in that category, so her "hotness" comes into question for me. If you like her, well good for you. Just keep her out of anything I want to see... like any new Whedon project.

Posted by: protoformX at February 27, 2010 8:03 PM

In the interest of adding nothing whatsoever to the discussion because everybody's already said it:

Dushku was good as exactly one thing: being Faith. And that picture is weird. I refuse to believe a little slip of a thing like her has cellulite.

I only watched most of the first season of Dollhouse, but I agree the guy who played Victor was really good. The episode where he was "imprinted" with Reed Diamond's character, he really nailed an impression of him.

Lastly, very glad Sofia's OK. So, uh, 2012, eh? Apocalypse Soon?

Posted by: MM at February 27, 2010 8:10 PM

Added relief that Sofia is OK.

I'd add a big "Fuck all y'all haters!" to the discussion RE: Eliza, but I'm too freakin' tired to care what you people think.

Posted by: Rykker at February 27, 2010 8:34 PM

Did you see when he was imprinted with Topher, MM?
Amazing performance.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at February 27, 2010 8:38 PM

If he still thinks she's an actress, they deserve each other.

Posted by: Cindy at February 27, 2010 8:57 PM

I missed it Optimus! I'm sure it was impressive.

Yeah, I'm not getting why Whedon has such "faith" (so to speak) in Eliza, especially when he's surrounded by people who can really ACT. It's not like he's never seen good acting.

Posted by: MM at February 27, 2010 10:42 PM

MM, sidebar, cellulite has nothing to do with weight. Its just the way women store fat--in a different patten than men, combined with a higher fat percentage than men, which results in dimpled skin. 90% of women get it, you're just extremely lucky if you don't. Obviously the more fat you have, the more cellulite you'll have. But almost every woman gets some in high fat areas like the pelvic region.

Science night on Pajiba has concluded.

But in that picture, that doesn't look like cellulite. It looks like Jaws took a bite out of her 10 years ago and this is how its healed.

Posted by: Kate at June (formerly Kate) at February 27, 2010 10:42 PM

Enver Gjokaj was AMAZING on Dollhouse. Just amazing. The show should have been about him. The Topher imprint was incredible, but every thing he did was fantastic. I really hope he gets more work.

Posted by: coveredinbees at February 28, 2010 3:33 AM

I haven't watched even a single episode of Dollhouse, but I kinda wish I had because... hellloooooo, Tahmoh Penikett! He is so ridiculous pretty.

Posted by: Gabs at February 28, 2010 1:01 PM

Nice looking girl, terrible, horrible actress.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at February 28, 2010 1:10 PM

I haven't watched even a single episode of Dollhouse, but I kinda wish I had because... hellloooooo, Tahmoh Penikett! He is so ridiculous pretty.

Tahmoh Penikett confuses me. He should be ugly--that jawline--but...I can't stop looking at him.

Also, if Dollhouse was all I'd ever seen him in I would swear that he can't act at all* (I was convinced otherwise by BSG). This also confuses me.

*I think most of us would agree that the scenes with Tahmoh/Eliza alone were PAINFUL to watch.

Posted by: Jerce at February 28, 2010 2:11 PM

Jerce, maybe bad acting is contagious.

Posted by: Cindy at February 28, 2010 2:23 PM

What a terrible thought.

Posted by: Jerce at February 28, 2010 2:32 PM

I don't agree that Eliza was the worst part of Dollhouse, I think Eliza was the BEST part of Dollhouse and that Echo was one of the most compelling characters on the show. I loved her journey from blank doll to fully fledged super person who truly could be anything. People who think she was only Faith the whole time obviously missed some episode because she was definitely not Faith while playing blank doll, the blind culties, the mother, Kiki, Rebecca Minor, Eleanor Penn, Crystal the hick, etc. You know what Eliza suffers from? People being bitter bitches that their fav Whedon actress wasn't playing the role and what I like to refer to as Lead Actress Syndrome. The lead actress on practically every TV show I see discussions on is always hated upon.

I'm looking forward to any future collaborations with Whedon and Dushku and hope they work together for many, many years to come. Their combination is magic and brings me my favorite TV. Buffy and Angel were always better with Faith and Dollhouse is probably my ultimate favorite show ever. It was brilliant and so incredibly creative. Joss Whedon and many other directors/writers in Hollywood think Eliza is talented, so teh rest of you can just shove it. Whedone didn't lose a bet, he loves Eliza and he loved working with her. It's as simple as that. Eliza is also the only one of his actors with any clout in the business to actually get films and TV shows off the ground. She has her own production company, can any other Whedon actress say that?

Posted by: ElizaRocks at February 28, 2010 3:38 PM

Well that was just absolutely adorable.

A bit deranged and bizarre, but adorable.

Posted by: Skewicide Blonde at February 28, 2010 4:27 PM

"Joss Whedon and many other directors/writers in Hollywood think Eliza is talented"

Okay, name three directors and three writers, right now, off the top of your head. (in addition to Whedon)

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at February 28, 2010 4:37 PM

Well that forced a rethink...

OK, I'm done.

Posted by: Squirrelgripper at February 28, 2010 4:59 PM

1) Upon reflection, I have decided that maybe Tahmoh Penikett is bright enought to know not to upstage The Executive Producer in his scenes with her.

2) She was the most talented member of the cast in Soul Survivors. Watch it and see if you don't agree.

Ohhhhhhh how tired I am of the Eliza Dushku bashing. I certainly don't think she (or her character(s)) for that matter were the best part of Dollhouse, but I don't think they were the worst.

The worst would be the occasionally terrible writing, especially in season 1. Eliza was often quite convincing. Of course, she was out-shined by Enven Gjokaj (ahh, how I want your sweet sweet nectar) and Dichen Lachman, and Olivia Williams, and Fran Kranz...

Sorry, I lost my train of thought picturing Enver Gjokaj in his comfy doll-state clothes.

Seriously, does anyone else think this man is beautiful? Wow this post ended up in a place it didn't start.

Posted by: Vince Noir at February 28, 2010 11:54 PM

I liked her as Faith and I will always stand by that.

Posted by: chriso at March 1, 2010 2:38 AM

Lead Actress Syndrome.
---
You're absolutely correct, as long as you pronounce it "led."

Posted by: , at March 1, 2010 9:05 AM

@Vince Noir,
*raises hand* me! Yes, Enver is quite the beauty, and he can really act. That's a great combo in my book.

I'm not going to hate on ED. If her clout got Dollhouse made, then she gave me the pleasure of being able to watch outstanding performances by Enver Gjokaj, Olivia Williams, Fran Kranz, Alan Tudyk, and Reed Diamond. (The considerable eye-candy factor of Tahmoh is not to be discounted, either...)
OK, the show had a wobbly start, but season 2 was much better. On the whole I'm glad that it was made, fuckups and all.

Posted by: Tarn at March 1, 2010 10:03 AM

I definitely don't think Eliza Dushku was the worst part of Dollhouse. The worst part of Dollhouse was the incredibly uneven writing when they were arguing with Fox about which direction to take the show in, as well as finding their groove for a concept that was pretty difficult to execute. I don't think she excelled at dabbling around with different characters in the mission of the week type episodes, but I thought she was great as Echo, going through a journey of self-discovery. By the end of season two, which was an amazing string of episodes, she was knocking it out of the park. I'm kind of tired of all the constant Dushku bashing.

Posted by: a tiny machine at March 1, 2010 11:13 AM

I'm not going to hate on ED.
::snort:: That took me a minute...

I'm amazed it took so many comments before Alan Freakin Tudyk was mentioned. He was phenomenal! And I third (or howevermany) the notion that Enver as Topher was priceless. Any episode with those twitchy twins was at the top of my list.

Posted by: Patty O'Green at March 1, 2010 11:42 AM

I do think Eliza is bad. What's charming about her is that I think she knows and is willing to work on it. She did improve a greal deal during Dollhouse, though obviously was out-staged by everyone else. I bet she's a very nice person because she does keep getting work. She is pretty but I wouldn't call her drop dead gorgous so I think it's that she MUST be very nice. That's rare for hollywood.

Posted by: Kelly at March 1, 2010 2:22 PM

I also think Dushku was horrible. It was always pretty obvious, but moreso in the episode where she and Dichen Lachman played the same character. Pretty much everyone else on the show was MUCH better than she is. That said, the ridiculous writing didn't help. That episode with the blind girl? Yikes. The episode where she played a backup singer? Oy.
