Dumbledore and the Doctor

Hoping to repeat the success of last year’s two-part Christmas special, “The End of Time,” Steven Moffat is bringing on a grand guest star and another pop mistress. Harry Potter’s beloved Dumbledore, Michael Gambon, and singer Katherine Jenkins will appear in “the most Christmassy Christmas special,” says Moffat. Er, sounds a little dorky dude, but then again, so is Matt Smith.

Moffat promises an exciting episode with A Christmas Carol twist, declaring, “We’re going for broke with this one. It’s all your favourite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters. And the Doctor. And a honeymoon. I’ve honestly never been so excited about writing anything. I was laughing madly as I typed along to Christmas songs in April.”

I don’t know about all y’all, but I’m a little done with all this season’s lovey-dovey stuff. It’s starting to feel less like Doctor Who and more like some bad tweener romance show. That said, I’ll take a little Michael Gambon imparting his elderly wisdom upon young Eleven — just please, no flirting with Amy.

No-one loves the Christmas specials more than I, but if you wanted to do A Christmas Carol, surely the time was when you did the Dickens episode?

Plus, "all your favourite Christmas movies at once"????

He's going to put The Bishop's Wife, Natl Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story, Holiday Inn, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas all in one hour?

Matt Smith's Doctor is NOT a dork. Bowties are cool.

AM, "dork" and "cool" are most certainly not mutually exclusive. I think Matt Smith's Doctor is *awesome!* but he's definitely a dork. In the best way ever.

And this news is definitely exciting. Because the Moff is a fantastic writer. And when he's "laughing madly" then awesome dialogue is bound to follow. This has to be a great special, it just has to, because I need my Doctory fix. I'm deep in the cave of Doctor Who Withdrawal, people. And yes, it's a real condition. And yes, it does cause problems in my daily life. Example: I saw a life-sized Dalek statue in a movie theater, freaked out, and started doing my fangirl dance.

And yes, my fangirl dance does epitomize the condition of being both cool and dorky. And yes, if you do my fangirl dance in public you WILL get weird looks.
And yes, if you stand behind a Dalek statue and go "You Will Be Exterminated!" in a loud voice, you will be shunned by everyone you know. But it will still be cool. Like bow ties.

"I don’t know about all y’all, but I’m a little done with all this season’s lovey-dovey stuff. It’s starting to feel less like Doctor Who and more like some bad tweener romance show."

I completely disagree. For one thing, I never found it all that lovey dovey. It was certainly less lovey dovey than every single other season except 4. It was nice to have a companion not butt crazy all over the Doctor all season, and with Amy being the hot young thing she is, it wouldn't make sense for her to be an old maid like Donna (love Donna though I do). Also, Rory > all human life.

I approve heartily of Esme's comment. TWO heartily.

esme, I think we will be needing video evidence of this dance, so that we may all learn it and participate, flash-mob-style, one day. Because that would be awesome.
Does it involve high-pitched noises and flailing? And jumping on tippy-toes? Because I can totally do that.

Posted by: MyySharona at July 12, 2010 6:05 PM

MyySharona, it does indeed. And, since you're in Austin (geep told me so!) you can see it in person at the South Lamar Alamo, where there is a life-sized Dalek (minus the eye/gun, for some reason). Or you can watch me take 3-4 minutes to stare at PickleWolf's comment, finally get it, and then scream (yes, really, I'm that caffeinated) and do the dance.

Also, Rory > all human life.

HUZZAH!!

Now REMEMBER...Remember.....Ms. Davis, and others, have not seen "The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang"...and she'll kill you if you spoil it or explain what you can infer from the description above based on said episodes.

GERONIMOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Yeah, what Jay said.

Ah, I see we are discussing Who! Good. Like any Whovian, it's time to get my dork on. There's about to be some serious opinion-bashing.

Yes, Rory over all human life. But good God, Moff, we get it! Amy's a wet dream apparently, and it's demonstrated by apparently every human and animal male ever in recorded past and future is programmed to superficially have a wildly-unrealistic crush on Amy, despite being deep in the throws of depression, a human robotic bomb, or a fish-vampire from space.

It's not like I don't get it, guys, I do! Hey, I'm all about the redheads, I am a girl, I have SEEN Prince Harry. But Amy is so awful as a human being, so selfish and blase and nasty and those eyes must hurt after bulging all day. This wasn't Doctor Who, it was a bunch of hours where we got told some chick is hot. Repeatedly. Calm it down Moff.

Yes, yes, I know. I'm the only one who feels this way, everyone luuuuuuuuuuuuvs Amy, they want to take her behind the middle school and get her pregnant.

I'm grateful though that Moff restrains himself a little and makes it clear the Doctor is having none of it. Matt Smith is wonderfully clueless and out of control. Love that boy. Bowties? BRACES are cool.

Posted by: Laurie at July 12, 2010 7:17 PM

No, she's a brat. I used to be a brat. I've been an exasperated boyfriend. I understand. Plus River blew her off the screen twice.

Posted by: Jay at July 12, 2010 8:00 PM

HeLLO. My name is Amy but you...may call me...anything...you...like. AseventhoughIhaveaboyfriend, youknowyouthinkI'm...ohhhh, shut UUUP...SEXAY AND KOOKAY! Woo!

No, I didn't like her very much either.

*skips off in the teensiest tiniest shorts and pouts a lot*

Ugh, I have an irrational hatred for Michael Gambon and the way he plays Dumbledore. It's not at all how I picture him in the books, he's all shouty and annoying.

Posted by: Carrie at July 13, 2010 5:07 AM

I haven't seen Michael Gambon in anything where he impressed me, and who the hell is Katherine Jenkins? Never heard of her.

Congratulations Esme! I would also stand behind the Dalek and yell "EXTERMINATE" at the little brats walking by with their popcorn, just to see how many would drop it and run.

I'm not a huge fan of Amy. I like Rory much better. I assume he's being brought back from the dead?

Posted by: BWeaves at July 13, 2010 8:27 AM

Not the no-necked simpering Katherine Jenkins, please! She's awful!! Please let her be a bit part and not be a romantic interest. I still have nightmares about the Kylie Christmas special. Urgh. *shudders*

Wow...they've really broken the bank in terms of casting this season.

Bill Nighy, Helen McCrory, Ian McNiece, Toby Jones, and now Michael Gambon?!

They're casting so many people from the Potter series, it makes me wish they'd do the Rowling episode they wanted to do in place of Shakespeare Code.

That said, haven't finished the season yet (only 6 episodes away) but I rather enjoy this take on the Doctor so far.

Posted by: DoctorControversy at July 13, 2010 11:03 AM

Word, Laurie. Totally disappointed in this season. And I'd had such high hopes for Moffat. Rory was too good for her.

Boy, can't wait for that "Lodger" review.
