But I Want It Now

"Doctor Who" American Schedule Released / Steven Lloyd Wilson

Trade News | November 2, 2009 | Comments (31)

We’ve known for some time now that David Tennant was leaving “Doctor Who” this year after a final series of long specials. BBC broadcast “The Next Doctor” on Christmas Day 2008, “Planet of the Dead” in April and plans to broadcast “Waters of Mars” in November and then Tennant’s swan song as the Doctor in a two parter called “The End of Time” sometime around Christmas of 2009. Over on this side of the Atlantic we got to see both “The Next Doctor” and “Planet of the Dead” on BBC America and DVD, but word was still up in the air over the American release of the three final specials.

Here’s what we’ve got now from the official BBC press release: “Waters of Mars” will hit BBC America on December 19th and be released on DVD (and Blu-ray) on February 2, 2010. “The End of Time” will also be released on DVD and Blu-ray that day, although there is no word when it will broadcast on BBC America. Hello Christmas in February!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Sorry, Doctor Who news always makes me do that.

HA! Anyone who waits for BBC or DvD is a chump (aka Philles fan).

That's why GOD invented Torrents, bubba.

What's that thing in his hand? Looks like a scyfy (or whatever) electric toothbrush.

THAT TRAVELS IN TIME!!!

I've never seen the show.

Posted by: superasente at November 2, 2009 9:42 AM

At least they've stepped things up a little bit. I was saying much the same thing as Slim yesterday (apart from mentioning the Phillies). Punks and chumps.

I'm glad they've gone into hi-def though, it was starting to look bad that "Torchwood" had the Blu-ray and not Big Papa.

I feel like at this rate the BBC doesn't really care about people downloading the show in the US. They know that those people are a lost cause, so they might as well suck in new viewers who will go and buy the DVDs.

Posted by: claire at November 2, 2009 10:02 AM

Yeah, cause those people (that is, Me) still buy the expensive dvd's every year. Hardly a lost cause, actually!

Posted by: Jay at November 2, 2009 10:06 AM

I watched series 1-3 on Netflix Instant and the series four through the lastest specials online, too. There's no way I'm waiting that long to see the rest. This is what the internet is for. Though when I have the money, I will shell out for the DVDs.

It's a sonic screwdriver of course!

Meanwhile if you are jonesing for your David Tennant fix, you can catch him every Sunday night hosting Masterpiece Contemporary on PBS.

PADDYDOG
THANK YOU. I CERTAINLY WILL.
SORRY ABOUT ALL THE 'SHOUTING' -- I'M TRYING TO RESTRAIN MYSELF FROM LEAPING AROUND IN PUBLIC SCREAMING, "TARDIS! TARDIS! TARDIS!" MY ENERGY IS BEING RELEASED THROUGH EXUBERANT TYPING.

Patience is a virtue?

Patience is for LOSERS!

You're talking loser talk.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at November 2, 2009 10:57 AM

Gosh, this is so bittersweet. It is like a lovely vacation drawing to a close: it is hard to focus on appreciating the last days when you know it will all be over soon. I have a feeling the new Doctor will be quite fine in his own right, but not seeing Tennant's achingly lovely anguish and exuberant glorious highs will be tough to take.

Oh yeah! Well you're talking pirating. I prefer to support the arts.

*walks into wall*

Posted by: Cindy at November 2, 2009 12:38 PM

No no no, supporting the arts is buying BBC's dvd sets.

Now...the usual method is releasing discs with a couple of episodes while the series goes on and then the full series set, which is all America gets. But how will they do the five specials? Hmmmm. Tricky.

Posted by: Jay at November 2, 2009 12:58 PM

I hate that thing the BBC does with releasing three eps at a time. Those mini-sets are expensive! I wait until the proper box set is released.

Posted by: Tarn at November 2, 2009 1:05 PM

I pay for my cable, someone is getting that money.

Posted by: Cindy at November 2, 2009 1:21 PM

Supporting the arts doesn't get me episodes of Hotel Babylon in a timely fashion, sugartits.

pffffft arts, PHOOOEY!

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at November 2, 2009 1:37 PM

I'm with Slim, screw patience. There are some things I have to have AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and I will go to great lengths to have it.
There's a list, actually, it goes in this order.
1) Doctor Who/Torchwood anything
2) Sex
3) Chocolate

Yes, sex really is second on the list. And shut up.

Posted by: myysharona (formerly Sharon) at November 2, 2009 1:58 PM

Basic supply and demand, folks. In this day and age the people who make these shows had better figure out a way to get paid regardless of downloads etc. They will never win this on the supply side. The demand will find a way around it. {see: war on drugs}

Then again, I have never bought a DVD in my life, I don't even know how to pirate stuff on the net, and I pay a ridiculous amount for cable (and there is still NOTHING on). So, just like the Doctor, the moral high ground is mine.

Posted by: Lindsey with an 'e' at November 2, 2009 2:01 PM

*sad sigh*

I don't want David Tennant to go! I like him!

*stomps feet*

I feels ya Myysharona.
Really, Doctor Who and Torchwood + chocolate are perfect for the instant gratification department. Sex is more fun if you have to work/wait for it a little. :-}

Posted by: Lindsey with an 'e' at November 2, 2009 2:56 PM

I'm so excited - my Teninch love is just too much!
Oh the bad things I would do to that man...

Posted by: Squeeziee at November 2, 2009 3:48 PM

Also, I'm curious . . . stardust,, what happened to your savant-ness?

Posted by: myysharona (formerly Sharon) at November 2, 2009 4:08 PM

I've decided to just go with the one name. Like Bjork. Or Cher. Or Beyonce. I like it better.

I mean, I didn't hit my head and lose my savant powers or anything like that.

Posted by: stardust (now with 100% less savant) at November 2, 2009 9:53 PM

My cable sucks. I don't even get BBC America. Crap.

Squeeziee, I would join you in doing bad things to him--does that sound creepy from a lurker?

Posted by: Lainie at November 3, 2009 8:47 AM

Suck it, North Americans! For once, the UK has an awesome show that YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR.

HAHAHAHAAAAAAAA

Posted by: Raisin'Cookies at November 3, 2009 11:21 AM

I may have to fire up those proxy servers.

Posted by: Kiddo at November 3, 2009 1:17 PM

Raisin'Cookies, I've dealt with it on both sides of the Atlantic! During the 4 years I lived in Europe I missed the limited runs of both Arrested Development and Firefly. On the other hand I had plenty of Who. ***sigh***

Posted by: Lainie at November 3, 2009 4:25 PM

Mr. or Ms. Cookies doesn't know what's goin on.

Posted by: Jay at November 3, 2009 11:09 PM

Who cares!!! My boyfriend also agrees with me. He is 10 years older than me, lol. We met online at age-gap club -- http://AgelessMeet.COM/. Maybe you wanna check out or tell your friends.
