Doctor Who?

My last article mentioned a series of short films that the MarvelTank would be playing before their movies and Doctor Strange was supposed to be one of them.

I may have been wrong about that.

What’s happening now seems to be a full length film that’ll be distributed by Disney and written by the same guys who wrote the new Conan and a draft of Cowboys and Aliens. A good director is more important for this character because so much of the imagery in the comic was extremely surreal.

A few tidbits of information about Stephen Strange: He’s the “Sorcerer Supreme” and he wields all kinds of magical power with items like “The Eye of Agamotto.” He was a surgeon until his hands were damaged, forcing him to search the Earth for a cure. Instead, he found magic. Oh, and he had a sidekick that was a pretty bad stereotype for a while. His name was Wong.

This is a role that requires some serious gravitas. He needs to be able to say “By the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth!” without sounding like an idiot. Dustin thinks that Josh Holloway is up for the role. This would be a bad thing.

What would be worse? How about Patrick Dempsey, who has been really pushing to try and get the part? Somebody even drew a picture of what it would be like. Prepare for chuckles, nerds.

These are ridiculous ideas. Everyone (or at least RobP) knows the best option would be inventing a time machine so we could get ’70s-era Christopher Lee. Now THAT is a man who could swear by the twelve moons of Munnopor.

Actually that looks like a picture of Edward Norton as Dr. Strange.

Hmm...I wouldn't mind that.

I'm kinda seeing David Arquette up there.

Posted by: Ms MoMo at June 23, 2010 6:28 PM

Besides. We've already seen Ed Norton do the magician thing [winks at TheBoy]

I think that I would pay $1,000 to see Tom Cruise in that role. If he tried to play it seriously, it would be the funniest thing ever committed to film.

You know things are bad in Hollywood when they consider an actor for a role solely on the basis of how closely his hair already matches the character. That's about the only reason Dempsey would ever be considered.

How about Hugh Laurie? Dr. Strangehouse.

without sounding like an idiot. Dustin thinks that Josh Holloway is up for the role.

Is this situational irony? You managed to put those two lines together like that?

I agree that the director is super-important. But who could do it, really? del Toro? If he could cut down on his other projects, hell yeah. Gondry? Maybe, but it seems a bit less fanciful than he might like.

Thing is, there will be a big temptation to get a more bombastic director, and turn it into Michael Bay's Constantine. And that would make me very, very cross.

Dr. Orpheus just beautifully ruins him for serious depiction. But, as for current name actors...I dunno, Christoph Waltz?

Kind of like how we 'Murricans choose presidents and other politicians. Does he have "executive hair"?

My husband collects comic art and has a ton of Dr. Strange commissions. I don't think he has one of Dr. Dempsey though...

Doesn't anyone in Hollywood listen to me?? Dr. House = Dr. Strange!

Posted by: AmbroseKalifornia at June 23, 2010 6:56 PM

I still say Alan Rickman would be perfect for the role. Not his Severus Snape act, but his Hans Gruber portrayal.

Posted by: The Wanderer at June 23, 2010 7:36 PM

Terry Gilliam could direct the shit out of it.

Posted by: Bucko at June 23, 2010 7:40 PM

Bucko wins for bringing in the Gilliam. Despite the fact that a Gilliam movie about Doc Strange would be a massive train wreck, it'd be a lot of fun.

Throwing out other possibilities:

Daniel-Day Lewis (oh I know it'll never happen, but I just think if he HAD to play a good-guy leading man comics character, it's this)
Zachary Quinto
Adrien Brody
Fassbender Fassbender

Marvel Entertainment presents a Darren Aronofsky film.

DOCTOR STRANGE

Starring Jason Patric as Stephen Strange,
Amanda Seyfried as Clea, Jeremy Piven as Baron Mordo, John Cho as Wong, James Hong as the Ancient One and Clive Owen as Dormammu.

I think that pic looks like The Master, the Roger Delgado/Anthony Ainsley version.

Hugh Laurie's almost 50, so I think he's a bit old, unfortunately. Also - Strange is American, and getting a Brit seems like an admission that Yankees can't do gravitas. I actually lean to James Marsden (if Johnny Storm is also Cap, Cyclops can be Strange). His gravitas was goofy in Enchanted and probably the best part of the movie. Regardless, dude can COMMIT to the role.

"I think that I would pay $1,000 to see Tom Cruise in that role. If he tried to play it seriously, it would be the funniest thing ever committed to film."

Especially with that cloak dragging on the ground behind him like a bridal train.

"Jeremy Piven as Baron Mordo"

I read that as Jeremy Feist for a second there, and was wholeheartedly supporting this plan of action. "Cruise and Feist, as you've never seen them before!"

Posted by: Craig at June 24, 2010 9:24 AM

What about Johnny Depp?

Posted by: mswas at June 24, 2010 9:31 AM

I think I change my vote - Olyphant.

Posted by: Byrd at June 24, 2010 9:34 AM

Oh, my stars and garters*, I was referenced by screen name in a Pajiba post... I'm truly honored. But, let's be honest, 70s Christopher Lee really is the only way to go. Or, like I said, Clive Owen.

Because no one's casting Jason Patric for anything and Dr. McStrangedreamy is just stupid. Josh Holloway ought to pull a Breakfast at Tiffany's and play Wong.

* Yes, this is a Beast catchphrase, but Adam took all the good Dr. Strange ones.

Posted by: RobP at June 24, 2010 9:35 AM

It just occurred to me, if they really want to cash in on the LOST phenomenon with their casting decisions, I can think of a lot worse actors to play Dr. Strange than Terry O'Quinn. In fact, I really can't think of anyone I'd rather play him at this point...

Posted by: RobP at June 24, 2010 10:10 AM

I vote Robert Downey Jr. He looks the part, and he hasn't been in anything big lately. Plus it'd be interesting to see him in a comic book movie.

Posted by: Lucas at June 24, 2010 5:57 PM

Jeff Goldblum. Jeff Goldblum. Maybe Jeff Goldblum?

Posted by: Cory at June 24, 2010 9:44 PM

@Lucas: Robert downey Jr is Iron Man.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH
