Do They Only Stand By Ignorance?

They’re making a film out of John Milton’s “Paradise Lost.” Yes, the poem. Dense prose, religious themes, you read it in English class. My gut instinct would be to think that there’s a reason it hasn’t been made into a film yet, but then I heard more about it; it’s starting to look like it could work.

Sources say the film will focus on the battle between the forces of Heaven and the rogue angels lead by Lucifer. It’s said to include “aerial combat,” and it will almost certainly be in three dimensions. Angel fights, yo. If you’re familiar with the “Dante’s Inferno” video game, it’ll probably be something similar. You got a taste of angel fights from Legion, but that was mostly using mortal weapons. The visuals of a heavenly battle between heavenly hosts (that should number in the millions) will be awesome if they succeed. The man chosen to direct is Alex Proyas of Dark City and Knowing fame.

His work on Dark City was original, interesting, and pretty damn cool. The Inception-like shifting city gives me hope that he could create a “Heaven” that wasn’t just glowy lights and puffy clouds. On the other hand, all I remember from Knowing was a dream sequence with a magnificent flaming moose. (And there’s probably a joke there somewhere but I have to leave the moose jokes for Robert Scott. It’s in his contract.)

There are a lot of good things in this story. It’s a classic work that will get more attention through a film adaptation. The director has the talent to make something really unique and action-packed. More importantly, it’s not based on a board game, or a television show that aired before I was born. And it’s not a remake, just an adaptation of one small part of a poem.

Yes, the work will be slightly bastardized. No, we probably won’t get to see some sweet Garden of Eden nudity. And yes, John Milton is probably spinning in his grave, but a pure adaptation would be 5 hours long and pretty boring. So let him spin and maybe we’ll be lucky and get an action film with some flashy images.

As long as he doesn't do to it what he did to I, Robot. Will Smith wandering through the 7th Circle of Hell saying, "Awwwww, Hell naw..."

1. I loved Inception. Don't get me wrong. But shouldn't we say that Inception had Dark City-like shifting cities?

2. Why won't there be Garden of Eden style nudity? I mean, the violence level should put it in the R category, hopefully hard-R. So, tits or GTFO.

3. "It’s said to include “aerial combat” and it will almost certainly be in three dimensions. Angel fights, yo." OK, so Legion kind of sucked balls, but the angel fightin' was actually pretty COOL.

So, tits or GTFO.

You rock, MM.

no no no no no.
that is all.

So Milton was kind of a literary snob. He detested rhyme as being "base and immaterial" and on all points false, hence the blank verse of Paradise Lost. In fact, the only rhyming couplet in the whole book (and the rhyme is a terrible forced usage at that) is at the moment of original sin.

In short, Milton was on e of the first to use Stylistic Suck as a form of snark, and I therefore nominate him as honorary Pajiban.

I've wondered why this didn't get a Wilder-style epic adaptation back in the 40s-early 60s.

Depending on who they get to play Lucifer, this could be intriguing.

IMO, Milton thought God had shitty, shitty management skills. It would make me very happy for that to be evident in the movie. (I'm not holding my breath.)

If it's just going to be the War in Heaven, why not simply adapt Stephen Brust's To Reign In Hell? That novel is pretty damn amazing in its own right, and it only concerns the origin of Hell (as in, the whys, whos, and hows of the War) which seems to be what Proyas is going for. And it wouldn't have all that beautiful poetry to get in the way reaching a wide audience.

Like Neil Gaiman's Sandman or The Dark Tower, Paradise Lost should be an HBO series.

Aw, man, RobP, I read that Stephen Brust novel waaaaay back. I don't remember it all that well, except that it was cool.

Thanks for reminding me!

So it'll blow goat balls?

Daggum right, To Reign in Hell is cool, MM. It really would make more sense to adapt that, it's practically structured like a movie already. And you've got four "devils" waging war: Lucifer, Satan, Beelzebub, and Leviathan. You only get Lucy in Paradise Lost. Jus' sayin'.

To Reign in Hell is a good read!
I would suggest that maybe it is too positive about Lucifer et al. than would be comfortable for Hollywood?

It's interesting to note how atheists/agnostics seem way more fascinated with Christian angel/demon themes than Christians themselves nowadays...just saying. Like, come on, for instance, who watches Supernatural?

And in Reign in Hell...isn't God depicted as some kind of angel, and Lucifer as the fallen hero or something?
