Is 'Disjointed' The Paycheck Kathy Bates Deserves?

Ok, let me get all the weed references out of the way up front, so I’m not tempted by terrible puns later on. Indica. Sativa. Edibles. Bong rip. Wacky tobaccy. Joint. Bud. Haze. Bogart. Dealer. Primo shit. Stick it in your pipe and smoke it. Vape. Phew! I feel better now.

Anyway, here’s the trailer for Netflix’s upcoming Kathy Bates comedy, Disjointed, which is lighting up (d’oh! missed one!) on August 25th:

If you watched that and thought, “Gee, it really comes off like a network sitcom but with swears,” then DING DING DING! You picked up on the Chuck Lorre-ness of it all, because yes — this show was co-created by the mind behind The Big Bang Theory and Two And A Half Men. Apparently it was even shopped around to networks, but Netflix nabbed it. To be fair, the other co-creator and writer is David Javerbaum, who has written for Late Show with David Letterman, The Daily Show, and The Colbert Report. And to be even fairer, I’ve laughed at The Big Bang Theory on occasion so I can’t really judge.

Kathy Bates plays Ruth Feldman, a lifelong advocate for legalization who is finally living her dream as the owner of a Los Angeles cannabis dispensary called “Ruth’s Alternative Caring.” It’s being set up as a workplace comedy, where she’ll be joined by three “budtenders” (Dougie Baldwin, Elizabeth Ho and Elizabeth Alderfer), her entrepreneurial twenty-something son (Aaron Moten), and a very troubled security guard who served in Afghanistan (Tone Bell). There was… a lot going on in that trailer though. I caught whiffs of That ’70s Show and even Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, along with some “filmed in front of a live studio audience” style jokes. On the other hand, the very existence of a Lorre-produced dispensary sitcom is proof of just how mainstream weed culture has become.

Look, Kathy Bates is an Oscar winner and a legend, and I hope this show treats her as such. Do you think she signed on, expecting it to land at a network and hoping for some fat residuals to carry her into retirement? Regardless, at least it seems like she’s having fun! Also, she’s kinda giving me poncho-envy.
